Seven IUP students joined Katie Farnsworth, Department of Geoscience, in participating as officials for the 2012 Penguin Bowl at the Pittsburgh Zoo on February 4, 2012.

Dan O’Hara, a double major in Geoscience and Computer Science, presented a talk at the fall 2011 meeting of the American Geophysical Union on research he’s conducting with Professor Jon Lewis on offshore earthquakes.

Dr. Michael Poage, Department of Geoscience, is returning for his seventh field season in Antarctica over the semester break, working with the National Science Foundation’s McMurdo Dry Valleys Long-Term Ecological Research Program.

The Geological Society of IUP is a student organization that brings together students interested in the Geosciences to build community.

Steve Hovan, Department of Geosciences, copresented “Bringing Real Ocean Research to Your Classroom: Plate Tectonics, Microbiology, Geology, and So Much More!” at the Science Teachers Association of New York State annual conference.

Michael Poage, Department of Geoscience, and colleagues presented “Relationships Between Soil Geochemistry and Nematode Habitat Suitability, Taylor Valley, Antarctica.”

Geoscience students Ellen Lamont (’12) and Dan O'Hara (’14) will present, alongside Dr. Rick Adkins (Mathematics), a hands-on workshop covering the basics of software used to create scientific graphics and research posters suitable for conference presentation.
