IUP Adds New Seismometer to Pennsylvania Network of Seismic Stations

IUP's seismometer is part of Penn State University's PASEIS network and one of about 42 stations installed across the state to help identify the magnitude, location, and timing of earthquakes in the area.

Geoscience Mineral Sale, November 14–17 in Weyandt Hall

Minerals, fossils, shells, polished stones, and jewelry will be on sale Monday through Thursday in the Weyandt Hall Planetarium Lobby. The annual sale is the main fund-raising activity of the Geological Society of IUP club and supports student activities such as field trips, museum visits, and club events.

Lewis and 10 Undergraduates Complete Six-Day Ocean Research Expedition

On August 17, 2016, Jon Lewis departed from Seattle, Washington, on the research vessel Sikuliaq bound for Seward, Alaska, with three co-mentors and a cohort of 10 undergraduate students from across the U.S. who are interested in science, technology, engineering, and math (STEM) research and careers.

Ken Coles, Geoscience, participated in Astronomy Night at Allegheny Observatory, part of the White House Frontiers Conference in Pittsburgh, on October 13, 2016. Conference participants, students, and members of the public observed the heavens through telescopes, including one set up by Coles.

Lewis and Geoscience Student Berry Present on Non-Equilibrium Topography and Active Fault Tectonics

Undergraduate student Allison Berry ('17) presented work she has done with Jon Lewis (Department of Geoscience) on his recently completed National Science Foundation project to understand non-equilibrium topography in southern Taiwan. Lewis presented a talk on his ongoing work with Costa Rican collaborators on active fault tectonics in Costa Rica.

Dinosaur Murder Mystery Site Research Conducted by Warnock and Geoscience Students

For the past five years, Jonathan Warnock, a paleoclimatologist in the IUP Geoscience Department, has done research at the Cleveland-Lloyd dinosaur quarry near Price, Utah in conjunction with colleague Joseph Peterson from the University of Wisconsin. Scientists consider the area as having one of the densest concentrations of bones ever found, but don’t understand why or how this group of carnivorous dinosaurs came together.

Coles Recruits Amateurs to Measure Asteroids

Ken Coles volunteered as an exhibitor at the Northeast Astronomy Forum in Suffern, N.Y., the largest astronomy show in the U.S., in April 2015. He worked with a group seeking observers to measure asteroids.

Lewis Awarded National Science Foundation Grant for Taiwan Tectonic Studies

Taylor Publishes Paper on a New Model for the Origin of Sedimentary Cycles

John Taylor, Department of Geoscience, coauthored an article in the Journal of Sedimentary Research that provides a new, unconventional interpretation of small (1-2m), shale-based and limestone-capped sedimentary cycles in rocks of Cambrian age in the Rocky Mountain and northern mid-continent regions as the products of short-term rises in sea level.

Hovan Presents on Paleoclimate and Paleoceanographic Conditions at Ocean Sciences Meeting

Steve Hovan, Department of Geosciences, presented his research at the 2010 Ocean Sciences Meeting in Portland, Oregon. Dr. Hovan and his colleagues at the University of California–Santa Cruz have been investigating the paleoclimate and paleoceanographic conditions of our planet through the use of deep sea sediments.

Free Planetarium Show: X-Ray Vision of the Sky

Lewis Presents Student’s Earthquake Research at American Geophysical Union Meeting

Free Planetarium Show: Astronomy Short Stories

On Wednesday, December 9, 2009, at 7:00 p.m., students from the IUP Stellar Astronomy class will present “Astronomy Short Stories,” a series of several short presentations in the IUP Planetarium. These include a look at orbiting telescopes, deep space objects, the sky of the arctic North, and finding the way out of the woods using astronomy. The show is free and open to the public.
