The Foundation for IUP is a nonprofit charitable 501(c)(3) that promotes and assists IUP.
The Foundation’s impact in helping the university become the only public university in Pennsylvania classified by the Carnegie Foundation Advancement of Teaching as a doctoral/research intensive university is expected to last for many years to come. Private dollars from generous individuals and corporate friends including faculty, staff, and alumni are providing a margin of excellence, establishing IUP as a university of national significance.
IUP was designated as a university in 1965, and the Foundation was founded in 1967. Inherent to university status was a need to invest in programs that would contribute to the quality of the university. During these same years, decreases in public funding became a reality for all state universities. The creation of the Foundation in 1967 responded to these circumstances and has served as a powerful force in making IUP a university of distinction.
