Learn a Less Commonly Taught Language
There are certain foreign languages that the US considers to be critical languages from a security point of view. We offer a number of different language classes, some of which are not truly critical but are nevertheless important.
The list of languages varies from year to year. In some cases, language tutors will teach you. For further information about Critical Language courses, contact the coordinator, Stuart Chandler, at chandler@iup.edu.
The languages that have been taught recently include:
Students meet with a tutor three hours per week in addition to practicing with recorded material. Most tutors are native speakers of the language. Professional teachers of the specific language may be brought in from other universities to evaluate student performance. The final grade is based on final examination and performance during the tutorial sessions. Each course carries three credits.
The Critical Languages fulfill the Foreign Language requirement of many majors if taken through the Intermediate level (the fourth semester of coursework). There may be special circumstances for your particular major, so be sure to check with your major advisor before beginning coursework in a Critical Language. Not all Critical Languages are offered every semester at IUP, so you'll need to plan your schedule accordingly.
