Courses: Institute for Rural Health and Safety

  • The following courses are currently offered: 

    Paramedic Program

    The IUP Institute for Rural Health and Safety offers a paramedic program. This program is primarily designed for future EMS personnel, but it is appropriate for anyone who may respond to emergencies, including fire/rescue personnel, nurses, coaches or athletic trainers, safety professionals, etc. Participants who successfully complete this program are eligible to take National Registry of Paramedics certification exams for Pennsylvania and national certification as a paramedic. Prerequisite: Students must be certified emergency medical technicians.

    Traditional Classroom EMT Training Program

    The IUP Division of Emergency Services Training offers a traditional Emergency Medical Technician (EMT) course which meets in the classroom several sessions per week. This program is primarily designed for future EMS personnel, but is appropriate for anyone who may respond to emergencies, including fire/rescue personnel, nurses, coaches or athletic trainers, safety professionals, etc. Students must meet physical capabilities and criminal background clearances as outlined by the PA DOH and the course includes attendance, academic and skill performance standards and a clinical experience. Participants who successfully complete this program are eligible to take National Registry of EMTs certification exams for Pennsylvania and national certification as an EMT. Students must be at least 18 years of age to enroll.

    Online/Hybrid EMT Training Program

    The IUP Division of Emergency Services Training offers an Online/Hybrid Emergency Medical Technician (EMT) courses. This program is primarily designed for future EMS personnel, but is appropriate for anyone who may respond to emergencies, including fire/rescue personnel, nurses, coaches or athletic trainers, safety professionals, etc. Students must meet physical capabilities and criminal background clearances as outlined by the PA DOH and the course includes attendance, academic and skill performance standards and a clinical experience. Participants who successfully complete this program are eligible to take National Registry of EMTs certification exams for Pennsylvania and national certification as an EMT.

    Online/Hybrid EMT courses are designed for students who are self-motivated, academically disciplined, and technologically proficient with standard computer applications. Students will complete required course lessons online and attend skill labs on scheduled days. Students must be at least 18 years of age to enroll.

    EMR Course

    IUP Emergency Services Training offers an Online/Hybrid EMR Course. This program is primarily designed for future EMS personnel, but is appropriate for anyone who may respond to emergencies, including fire/rescue personnel, nurses, coaches or athletic trainers, safety professionals, etc. Students must meet physical capabilities and criminal background clearances as outlined by the PA DOH and the course includes attendance requirements and skill performance standards. Participants who successfully complete this program are eligible to take the National Registry of EMTs Emergency Medical Responder certification exams for Pennsylvania and national certification.

    CPR Course

    IUP Institute for Rural Health and Safety is offering an American Heart Association CPR course, BLS for Healthcare Providers. This course includes CPR and airway management techniques for adult, child, and infant patients and use of a bag-valve mask and AED. Students who successfully complete the course, all practical skills, and a multiple-choice written exam with an 84 percent or higher will obtain an American Heart Association CPR/BLS for Healthcare Providers certification card valid for two years. Fees do not represent income to the American Heart Association.
