The Master of Arts/Teaching English (MA/TE) program is offered in response to recent national studies of teacher training that focus on the value of research on teaching literature, composition, and language through academic course work and supervised field experiences.
This program is designed for in-service secondary English teachers who are interested in advanced, in-depth study in the teaching of English and for students with a bachelor’s degree in English (or its equivalent) who wish to pursue initial teacher certification through the Praxis exams. This program is one of the few in the state designed for this purpose.
Students seeking initial certification through the MA/TE program should be aware of the six semester hours of student teaching required in addition to the core course work. The MA/TE will require a total of 36 semester hours for in-service teachers and a total of 42 to 45 semester hours for those students seeking initial certification.
Classes within the program are taught in a manner in keeping with current theory of best teaching practices so that students can learn to teach by example.
