Mission Statement

The mission of the Department of Developmental Studies is to help undergraduate students prepare, succeed, and excel in their college curriculum. This is accomplished through the following programs:

  • Comprehensive First-Year Experience for freshman students matriculating through the Department of Developmental Studies. This includes developmental advising with a professional educational advisor, credit-bearing freshman module courses linked to academic support sessions, and peer advising with trained upper-class students.
  • Credit-bearing courses:
    • Developmental courses in mathematics and reading
    • Learning enhancement courses in mathematics and critical reading
    • College success courses in introduction to higher education, college learning strategies, and career development
    • A course to prepare undergraduates in roles as paraprofessionals
  • College Undergraduate Success Program (CUSP), an early entrance freshman experience for first-year students, scheduled during the week before Fall term
  • Center for Learning Enhancement, peer-led academic support sessions (Supplemental Instruction, Tutoring, and noncredit Workshops)
Academic Support
The Department of Developmental Studies offers a number of services through the Center for Learning Enhancement including Supplemental Instruction (SI), peer tutoring, and college success workshops.
CUSP–Early Entrance Experience
The College Undergraduate Success Program (CUSP) Early Entrance Experience is an early entrance freshman experience for first-year students, scheduled during the week before Fall Term.

Newsletters for Developmental Studies, Peer Assistance, and Supplemental Instruction
Walk-In Tutorial Assistance
Trained peer educators provide individual and group assistance for a range of lower-level courses. Students should come prepared, with their course work, questions, notes, and texts.
