Institute for Cyber Security

  • Mission

The Institute for Cyber Security is an interdisciplinary institute that will promote and encourage cyber security awareness and practice, both on campus and off, through teaching, research and service activities to enhance people's knowledge of this important field.

Cyber security is broadly defined to include information assurance, cyber forensics, data quality, data completeness, data accuracy, privacy, and other issues related to the storage, transmission, and sharing of data and other information. The Institute involves faculty and students from the colleges of Business, Education and Educational Technology, Health and Human Services, Humanities and Social Sciences, and Natural Sciences and Mathematics in dissemination of knowledge, research, and service projects in the general area of information assurance. The Institute will affiliate itself with faculty and students at other institutions such as community and other four-year colleges to share resources and information in this field and promote the concept and practice of insuring the security and integrity of information.

The Institute for Cyber Security strives to establish leadership in cyber security and information assurance by contributing to the Homeland Defense initiative. IUP does this by:

    • Producing graduates in cyber security.
    • Providing “Training the Trainer” sessions through summer faculty workshops in cyber security and information assurance.
    • Partnering with other Centers of Academic Excellence in Cyber Security to bolster the national program in cyber security.
    • Collaborating with companies in Western Pennsylvania, West Virginia, Ohio, and surrounding areas engaged in security research.
    • Providing internship opportunities for students to gain hands-on experience as they work with faculty research projects or community projects.
    • Increasing awareness in security and encourage local companies to participate in security by arranging distinguished visitor seminars, sponsoring colloquial, conferences, and workshops in the area of cyber security and information assurance.
  • Programs of Study
IUP offers a BS in Computer Science/Cyber Security Track and a minor in Cyber Security. Students taking specific cyber security courses may receive CNSS certificates. Scholarships are available to qualified students.

The Institute for Cyber Security in collaboration with the Department of Computer Science, IT Services, and other departments actively promotes cyber security awareness and information assurance. Activities include Cyber Security/IA Day, Information Assurance Club, Lunchtime Hackers, National Cyber Security Awareness Month, and interdisciplinary roundtable discussions on issues of national cyber security.

    Research and Student Work
