We offer noncredit courses to people of all ages who’d like to add a new dimension to their life.
Enjoyment and personal growth are the focus of Community University Studies. There are no exams or grades, and courses are led by instructors delighted to share their expertise with people from all walks of life. Courses are offered at IUP Indiana and Northpointe campuses.
Spring 2013 Courses
Indiana Campus
- Basic Italian
Join us for this introductory-level course in speaking Italian. Emphasis will be on grammar and pronunciation. If you are planning a trip in the future, this class might be useful to you.
- Drawing Fundamentals
Get an introduction to the essential materials and techniques of drawing. Students will develop observational abilities and rendering skills.
- Explore Landscape Painting
This course is designed for beginners and intermediate level who interested in the study of landscape as a subject. Through practice techniques of mixing color, underpainting, washing, dry brushing and use of palette knife, students will explore historical and contemporary approaches to landscape painting; gain experience in observing and expressing the changing nature of light and color; and study common elements such as skies, trees, mountains, rocks, and water arranged into a coherent composition.
- General Computer Concepts
This workshop will introduce beginner-level computer concepts in the areas of: PC computer components, desktop options and personalization, file and folder data storage, Internet browsing and search engines, and the basics of document creation using Microsoft Word.
- Ghost Hunting: A Short Introduction for Beginners
This three-hour workshop will provide those who are new to ghost investigation with protocols, advice, and instruction on using equipment. In addition, some of the theory and speculation behind ghost lore and behavior will be discussed.
- Ghost Hunting: Field Experiences
This field investigation is appropriate for experienced ghost investigators and those who have completed the “Ghost Hunting: A Short Introduction for Beginners” workshop. We will move in small groups through several on-campus sites, using cameras, tape recorders, meters, and other equipment to attempt to document possible paranormal activity.
- Personal Art Project Workshop
This special workshop is designed to work with students’ personal art projects. Students will choose one of their favorite subjects and materials to complete at least two finished drawings or paintings by the end of the course.
- Yoga (two sections available)
This yoga class begins with basic postures, concentrating on flexibility, strength, balance, concentration, and breathing. As the class progresses, we will add yoga flow and more advanced postures according to needs of the participants.
Northpointe Campus
- Basic Italian I (Northpointe Campus — classes begin Feb. 19)
In this class, students will experience Italian for the first time and will enjoy learning word-by-word in a dynamic way.
- Basic Italian IV (Northpointe Campus — classes begin Feb. 18)
This course will introduce the Italian language to students who took Basic Italian III (part 2) or students who took Italian previously.

Course Cancellation Policy
The Office of Adult and Continuing Education reserves the right to postpone, cancel, split, or combine classes; limit enrollment; and change instructors and class locations when necessary. Weather-related cancelations are announced on area radio stations.
Withdrawal Policy
For refunds, course withdrawals must be submitted in writing. Telephone withdrawals are not accepted. For withdrawals received three working days before the first class meeting, 100 percent of the cost is refunded, less a $15 administrative fee. For withdrawals received before the second class meeting, 50 percent of the cost is refunded, less a $15 administrative fee. No refunds after the second class meeting. Fees for classes that meet only once are not refundable unless written withdrawal is received three working days before the class meets; 100 percent of the cost less the $15 administrative fee is refunded. Refunds take approximately four weeks to process.
Participants under Age 18
Teens younger than 18 may take courses only if registered with an adult guardian and with prior approval from the Office of Adult and Continuing Education.
Continuing Education Units and/or Act 48 Hours
CEU units and hours are awarded for participation in approved courses and workshops.
