The internship is available to students whose permanent residence is within approximately 250 miles of Erie’s home office. Applications will be accepted from students who are completing their sophomore or junior year. Qualifications include a major in MIS or Computer Science and a minimum GPA of 3.0. Several interns will be hired for this paid internship program. Relocation assistance will be available if needed.
IT Division: Interns will be assigned to one of the four following disciplines within our IT Division. Some basic duties and knowledge preferred is included.
Business Systems Integration: six positions
Writing programs related to corporate systems of insurance, processing systems; some Internet or Web development. Knowledge of, JAVA, NATURAL, Visual Basic. Knowledge of COBOL required. The technical writer intern would need solid writing and communication skills. The Web programmer intern would need web development classes. The project management intern needs experience with MS Project, proficiency with all tools in MS office suite, and experience working in a team setting.
Operations and IT Services: two positions
Assist in computer operations, PC install, and upgrades. Help with network maintenance and assist in various tasks to deliver service from IT hardware resources. Involvement with data base architecture installations and upgrades.
Quality Assurance: three positions
Prepare basic test conditions and scripts. Assist in date collection. Knowledge of DOS and/or Delphi, Visual Basic, COBOL, and Microsoft Excel and Word.
Business Consulting: three positions
Assisting technical writers. Knowledge of Microsoft Word and Excel. The intern would need good proofreading skills and a strong knowledge of grammar. Also, good organizational skills and attention to detail.
Data Administration: one position
Knowledge of database management systems; experience with system analysis and COBOL programming. Working knowledge of Word, Excel, and PowerPoint. Experience with Oracle, SQL Server, Crystal reports is a plus.
Actuarial: Interns will be assigned to our Actuarial Division.
Intern will work with experienced departmental staff to learn actuarial techniques, data sources (rate manuals, Erie and competitors), and spreadsheets to conduct reviews of rating factors. Intern will conduct detailed analysis of Erie’s insurance programs, profitability, rating factors, reserve studies and experience exhibits. Intern will create exhibits, reports, and charts for actuarial and reserve studies, state insurance department filings, and rate recommendations. Determines appropriate presentations format. Intern should have excellent written and verbal communication, strong mathematical/calculus aptitude, and major in mathematics (or a related field). Proficiency in calculus as demonstrated by passing the first actuarial exam and basic knowledge of spreadsheet software is preferred.
