To set the tone for academic excellence, IUP offers a common reading program to all new students. Each student receives a copy of the chosen book and is invited to read it before the start of the school year.
The 2009–2010 Common Freshman Reader Selection Committee is proud to announce the title for this year’s program: Nickel and Dimed: On (Not) Getting by in America, by Barbara Ehrenreich.
During the 2010–2011 school year, students are encouraged to attend programming related to the book. While the common reading program is voluntary, faculty members are invited to obtain copies of Nickel and Dimed: On (Not) Getting by in America from their deans.
Through reading, discourse, and engagement with faculty and other students in and out of the classroom, our freshman class will experience IUP as a university that actively encourages student participation and recognizes the educational value of active involvement in the intellectual life of the campus.
