Earn a PhD that combines communications theory, research, and production

The PhD in Communications Media and Instructional Technology (CMIT) will prepare you to conduct academic research, study media theory, and produce new media. Our unique program incorporates a hands-on approach, and students participate in and create productions utilizing facilities in radio, audio, video, simulations, games, photography, and instructional technology.

CMIT Welcomes New Program Coordinator

Dr. Zachary Stiegler assumes his new role as coordinator of the PhD in Communications Media and Instructional Technology in May 2014. Dr. Stiegler is the editor of the Journal of Communications Media Studies as well as an instructor in the PhD program teaching COMM 801, Ideas that Shape Media. His research interests include radio history, communication law and policy, and critical studies of popular culture. Dr. Stiegler takes over the program coordinator position at the end of the Spring 2014 semester.


The CMIT PhD program offers course work in communication theory and quantitative and qualitative research, in addition to production courses. Choose from theory and culture electives in communication pedagogy, crisis communication, children and media, corporate communication, media criticism, and others.

Program Schedule

CMIT classes are offered primarily on weekends, allowing working professionals to continue their current careers and attend classes six weekends per semester. The CMIT program accommodates full and part-time enrollment. Full-time students can complete their course work in just over two years.
