Laurel Highlands Communications Conference 2016

The 2016 Laurel Highlands Communications Conference will be held, Friday, April 29, 2016, at the Kovalchick Convention and Athletic Complex at Indiana University of Pennsylvania.

Television Writer to Headline LHCC

John TchernevProfessor John Tchernev will be the keynote speaker for the 2016 Laurel Highlands Communications Conference. Tchernev spent 8 years in Los Angeles working in television production and film development. Tchernev worked as a production assistant on a variety of television shows including Futurama, Reba, and Second Time Around, among others. He spent two years writing for the animated comedy Class of 3000 on Cartoon Network and wrote several freelance screenplays, becoming a member of the Writers Guild of America.

Working as a writer led Tchernev to become increasingly interested in entertainment media as a potential tool for promoting public engagement with social issues. He returned to the academic world in 2009 and earned an M.A. and Ph.D. in Communication from The Ohio State University.

Dr. Tchernev’s research builds upon his background as a writer and explores how factors of message content, narrative structure and audience psychology interact to determine whether a persuasive message is successful. Dr. Tchernev is currently working on a series of studies that utilize dynamic methods of data collection, including psychophysiological recording, to examine real-time audience responses to narrative persuasion.

Dr. Tchernev is an Assistant Professor of Strategic Communication in the Department of Media, Journalism & Film at Miami University in Oxford, Ohio.

This year’s conference will feature paper presentations on academic research in all areas of communication and media as well as a Media Showcase of productions.
