Haven Project hosts Take Back The Night Table

Stapleton Library

The Haven Project will host a Take Back The Night table in the Stapleton Library on Monday, February 27th, 2017 beginning at 10:00 am to 3:00 pm.  Each April, the Haven Projects sponsors Take Back the Night, a march to raise awareness about sexual violence and show support for victims and survivors.   This is our biggest event, and has proven to draw crowds in the range of 1,500 and 3,000 people, bringing together a diverse group of participants including faculty, staff, community members, student athletes, fraternities, sororities, ROTC, and many other students and student organizations.   It is a very powerful event in which the campus as a whole comes together to stand in support against sexual violence and for its victims/survivors.  A “Speak Out” for the victims/survivors of sexual violence follows the march.  Leading up to the event, The Haven Project will have several information tables, and well as t-shirt making workshops for the Clothesline Project, which is displayed at the march. Come to our tabling event to find out more about the event, workshops coming up or to find out how you can volunteer.

Sexual violence is a serious issue that affects all of us.  At IUP, we have a strong commitment to address this widespread problem.  Take Back the Night is an annual event designed to raise awareness and support survivors of sexual violence.  Visit the Haven Project's table for more information about this event and win some prizes.

G60 Suites on Maple-East

The aim of the workshop is to give students a clear understanding of what sexual consent is and to facilitate conversations about consent.  It is so important that people are properly informed of consent, respecting other peoples' boundaries and not being ashamed of willingly engaging in or rejecting sexual activity. Learning about consent is also vital to identifying sexual assault and supporting survivors of sexual assault by outlining and understanding that sexual activity without consent is a crime for which only the perpetrator can be to blame.

Take Back The Night

Putt-Delaney Courtyard

Every spring, The Haven Project coordinates its largest event with a gathering of several hundred people, including students, staff, faculty, and Indiana residents. Participants, often carrying anti-violence signs and chanting anti-violence and empowerment messages, march through the IUP campus to demonstrate that they do not want to see violence in our community. This march is held in an effort to end violence and send the message that victims and survivors will no longer remain fearful and secluded in their homes. This worldwide initiative has a long and proud history of supporting survivors while trying to prevent violence. Both men and women participate in Take Back the Night marches in their communities.  This march is held in an effort to end violence and send the message that victims and survivors will no longer remain fearful and secluded in their homes. This worldwide initiative has a long and proud history of supporting survivors while trying to prevent violence. Both men and women participate in Take Back the Night marches in their communities. IUP’s Take Back the Night march is followed by a powerful survivor speak-out, which offers survivors of violence an opportunity to give voice to their experiences. Some choose to share their stories affirming their transition from victim to survivor. The speak-out is an inseparable and vital part of IUP’s experience of Take Back the Night and brings awareness to others about the impact of sexual assault and violence on victims and survivors. The march is scheduled to begin at 8:00 p.m. tonight, April 12th, 2017.
