6:00 p.m.–7:00 p.m. | 32 Weyandt Dr. Josiah Townsend will present a seminar in which he will describe biodiversity research and conservation initiatives in Honduras. Recent highlights include the discovery (with the assistance of IUP graduate and undergraduate student researchers) of two new species of snakes, a new salamander, and a new treefrog. Dr. Townsend will also discuss the January 2013 joint IUP expeditions to Honduras that documented a previously unknown endemic amphibian fauna in an unsurveyed cloud forest, with as many as four new amphibian species, and then performed a rapid biological assessment around the site of the first documented nest for the rare Harpy Eagle in Honduras. Future IUP graduate student-led initiatives to be detailed include characterization of a jaguar conservation unit in northern Honduras and evaluation of overwintering habitat for migratory warblers with breeding grounds in Pennsylvania and surrounding states. |
