Black History Month 2013 is themed 2050: Rooted in the Past, Moving Forward and this program is presented as a special dedication to Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. It concludes a day-long list of events and features an interactive panel presentation of noted scholars, activist and performers that is designed to answer such questions as "Can today's art be an act of resustance to public policy that too often marginalizes youth, particularly those from Black and Brown communities - or is it simply a diversion in an era of individualism and consumer culture? Designed in consultation with Bakari Kitwana, journalist, activist, and political commentator on politics and youth, featured panelists include Ms. Sonia Sanchez, poet-activist; Dr. Haki Madhubuti, publisher,poet, activist; Mr. Adam Mansbach, author; Ms. Chinaka Hodge, poet/playwright (Def Poetry Jam); Popmaster Fabel Pabon, Hip-Hop Pioneer; and Dr. James Peterson, Director of Africana Studies, as moderator. A Q & A will follow the program. The program is part of IUP's 23rd MLK Commemoration-Black History Month Celebration. Free Admission! Attendance Voucher will be available.
