You are invited to the first Religious Studies club meeting on Tuesday, February 5th, at 7pm in the library. Please meet inside the entrance doors and we'll go to a classroom. We will be discussing trip ideas, fundraising, and electing a new President for next year! We will only be electing the President at this time so that they have a chance to observe and ask questions while the vets are still here but they will not officially take office until the fall. So join us with some great ideas and let's have an awesome semester!

Committee for the Study of Culture and Religion Meeting

The Committee for the Study of Culture and Religion will be having its first meeting on Wednesday, February 6, 2013 at 7 PM in the Library. We will be meeting outside of Java City and going to a quiet classroom where we will conduct elections for the next year, discuss upcoming trips and throw around ideas for this semester. There will be also little goodies to welcome everyone into the new semester—we hope to see you there!

Greetings Everyone, I hope your semester is starting off on the right foot! We will be having a Religious Studies Club meeting next Tuesday, February 19th, at 7pm outside Java City in the library. We've got a few exciting things for the semester planned including tabling in the library, a panel on created worlds, and a karaoke fundraiser! But we're really trying to knock this semester out of the park. So I want everyone to bring two ideas with them about either fundraisers or activities we can do! The last meeting we tossed around the idea of having a movie night fundraiser around Easter as well. I can't wait to hear your ideas! Don't forget to buy your departmental T-shirts in the office from Linda.

CSCR Meeting

Java City at Stapleton Library

The next meeting being held for the Committee for the Study of Culture and Religion will be right after the Religious Studies meeting which starts at 7pm on February 19, 2013, in front of Java City in the Stapleton Library. CSCR will be holding official elections for this coming year, discussing the upcoming trip to Washington D.C. and potential lecture ideas for the coming months. The meeting should not take up too much time--only about twenty minutes at the most. See you there! Hannah Halphen, current president.

On Tuesday, March 5, Dr. Mark S.M. Scott of Villanova University will present, “No Pain, No Gain: Rethinking John Hick's Soul-Making Theodicy.” The talk will be held in McElhaney 206 at 3:30-4:45 p.m., and all members of the campus community are invited to attend. Dr. Scott is the Arthur J. Ennis Postdoctoral Fellow at the Villanova Center for Liberal Education at Villanova University.

It's time for another Religious Studies Club Meeting tomorrow night! We will be meeting outside Java City in the library at 7pm on Tuesday, March 5th. We'll be finalizing plans for the World Building Panel next week and solidifying plans for showing an Easter themed film. Even if you've never been to a meeting before remember, it's never too late to join and we welcome new members with open arms!

Religious Studies guest lecturer, Elizabeth Barstow, to present: "'Not a Duet, But a Trio': Romantic Relationships in American Evangelical Culture, 1945-1965." On Thursday, March 7, Dr. Elizabeth Barstow of Wofford College will present "'Not a Duet, But a Trio': Romantic Relationships in American Evangelical Culture, 1945-1965." The talk will be held in McElhaney 206 at 3:30-4:45 p.m., and all members of the campus community are invited to attend. Dr. Barstow is a Visiting Assistant Professor of Religion at Wofford College, and was invited by IUP's Department of Religious Studies.

On Tuesday, March 12, Dr. Alison Downie of IUP will present "Openness: An Orientation in Christian Ecofeminist Theology and a Pedagogical Goal." The talk will be held in McElhaney 206 at 3:30-4:45 p.m., and all members of the campus community are invited to attend. Dr. Downie is a visiting assistant professor in the Department of Religious Studies.

The Committee for the Study of Culture and Religion will meet in Stapleton Library at 8pm (March 12, 2013)-- As far as the need for ideas and membership is concerned, we still need you! We are offering great leadership positions for the upcoming year, and it looks amazing on your resume to be involved in leading one of Indiana University of Pennsylvania's most important on-campus groups (even if we're biased around here). If anyone has any ideas, or would like to be apart of our goings on, please either email me (ymfs@iup.edu) or attend our meeting (which is usually 30 minutes or less).

The Religious Studies Club will host a Movie and Discussion on Thursday, April 11th in the Monogahala Room at the HUB. We will be viewing Adam's Apples. Come for free snacks, a gritty film, and a good time!

Japanese Tea Ceremony

The Religious Studies department in cooperation with the Asian Studies Committee is bringing in two specialists to give a presentation about the Japanese Tea Ceremony. This will take place from 5:00-6:00 in the HUB Monogahela Room. There is a $3 fee for materials and pre-registration is required. You may sign up for this event in the Religious Studies Office, Sutton 452. Seats are limited and will be filled on a first-come-first-served basis so be sure to sign up soon. If you will be taking RLST 220 "Buddhist Thought and Practice" next fall, you can get some extra credit for that class before it even begins! There will be an extra-credit sheet to sign at the event.

Indiana's Islamic Center is holding an "Islamic Awareness Day" from 5:00 pm to 9:00 pm in the HUB Ohio Room. A free meel will be included. This event is free.

Bus trip to the National Museum of the American Indian

Hub Parking Lot

The Committee for the Study of Culture and Religion and the Religious Studies Department are sponsoring a bus trip to the National Museum of the American Indian. The trip will be on Saturday, April 20, 2013. The bus will leave the HUB parking lot at 8:00 a.m., returning at midnight. Cost of the trip is $16 per person (cash only), and everyone is welcome. Spring Wellness Fair

Sunflower Yoga Studio

This Saturday, April 27th, student interns, Lauryn Osborne(College of Health and Human Services) and Bobby Sowerbrower(College of Humanities and Social Sciences) will be hosting a Spring Wellness Fair at Sunflower Yoga Studio from 1:00-4:00.This is an event that we collaborated on as a project for our internship at Sunflower Yoga Studio. Following the fair will be a FREE yoga class from 4:00-4:30 and a FREE meditation class from 4:30-5:00. We will be promoting wellness in a broad spectrum, focusing on the physical, mental and spiritual aspects on both the personal and community levels. We wanted to bring it to your attention, especially as an excellent extracurricular opportunity for students. Several local organizations promoting wellness will be offering information about their goals and services. Healthy refreshments will be donated by our local Pita Pit! A $5 donation is suggested, and all donations collected will go directly to Four-Footed Friends, our local no-kill animal shelter. We really hope you will join us for a day of healthy fun!!
