If the United States is to remain globally competitive in emerging high-technology industries, more individuals experienced in applied science will be needed. IUP recognizes the growing need for educational opportunities that prepare scientists for careers in the commercial application of basic and applied research.

The Biotechnology Research Institute, established within the College of Natural Sciences and Mathematics, helps to prepare students for careers in applied sciences. Established as a joint venture through a partnership of government, academia, and the private sector, the institute’s purpose is to conduct research appropriate for further development and application in the field of biotechnology, as well as to develop and offer education and training programs. Private-sector companies and government agencies may engage the resources and expertise of the institute to assist in the commercialization of new products, promotion of the economic health of the nation, and reduction of health-care costs.

The institute and its laboratories incorporate the resources of existing programs in Biochemistry, Biology, Chemistry, Computer Sciences, Geosciences, Mathematics, Physics, and Psychology to provide services and expertise leading to the creation of new concepts and products.
