Two faculty positions are available:
I. Assistant Professor of Biology (Public Health)
The Department of Biology is seeking applications for a tenure-track position beginning August 2013. A Ph.D. or Dr. P.H. is required. We seek a public health biologist with interests in outreach to underserved rural populations. Areas of possible expertise include, but are not limited to, chronic disease, infectious disease, mental health, epidemiology, toxicology, bioinformatics, and biostatistics. The successful candidate will contribute to teaching and advising in various Department of Biology programs and will be expected to teach 12 contact hours each semester in general education/non-majors biology courses and undergraduate and graduate (M.S.) courses in their area of expertise. The successful candidate is also expected to actively engage in discussions within the Department of Biology about the possible development of interdisciplinary programs in public health.
Candidates should demonstrate outstanding skill and enthusiasm for undergraduate and master’s-level education with particular emphasis on developing an active research program that involves students. Beyond the individual’s area of expertise, the exceptional candidate will have the ability to foster interdisciplinary collaborations with other departments in the natural, social, and health sciences. During the interview, candidates will be expected to present a seminar on their research and may be asked to give a teaching demonstration.
The department has experienced significant faculty retirements in recent years. To replace the retired individuals, we seek to hire energetic, innovative professionals who share our traditional commitment to a student-centered learning environment as well as our commitment to research. In addition to classroom teaching, our faculty provides students with opportunities for active learning through hands-on science in the form of involvement in research projects and internship opportunities. We wish to hire new faculty who will commit to the growth and development of the department and its programs as well as to the growth and development of our students.
The “Teacher-Scholar” Model of Ernest Boyer, based on a comprehensive definition of scholarship, has been adopted at IUP to define faculty professional growth and responsibilities. The teacher-scholar is a person who understands subject matter deeply enough to structure, select, and organize it in order to effectively communicate to students. A teacher-scholar also is a person whose scholarship and service to the university and community demonstrate a commitment to creating new knowledge, to applying knowledge to solving problems, to synthesize various strands of knowledge, and to understanding how students learn. A more complete description of the Teacher-Scholar Model can be found here. Within the context of the Teacher-Scholar Model, the successful applicants for the Biology faculty positions will be expected to develop productive research programs that actively involve undergraduate and graduate students in the process of science.
Successful applicants will contribute to shared university governance through participation in departmental, college, or university committees, programs, and work groups as appropriate. All candidates must demonstrate collaborative skills, a commitment to high-quality mentoring and teaching of students, and active participation in department activities.
Full consideration will be given to applications completed by January 15, 2013, but the search will continue until the position is filled. Send letter of application, curriculum vitae, undergraduate and graduate transcripts, statement of teaching philosophy, statement of research goals, and three letters of reference to: Thomas Simmons (Chair), Faculty Search Coordinating Committee, Department of Biology, 114 Weyandt Hall, 975 Oakland Avenue, Indiana, PA 15701-1090, (724) 357-2352.

II. Assistant Professor of Biology (Neurochemistry)
We are seeking applicants for a permanent, full-time, tenure-track position in Neurochemistry. This will be an entry-level appointment at the rank of assistant professor. A doctorate in biology or a related discipline is required, and postdoctoral and teaching experiences are preferred.
Expertise in cell culture and/or microscopy is also preferred for this position. This position offers substantial resources and state-of-the-art core facilities allowing for confocal, fluorescence, and stereomicroscopy. The department is home to a newly renovated animal care facility housing a modern zebrafish aquarium system. Recent modifications to the biology curriculum have brought enhancements to the department’s molecular biology capacity, including regular and real-time PCR, microplate reading, and gel documentation. The successful candidate will be encourageded to establish an independent, extramurally funded research program that incorporates research training for undergraduate and graduate students. Beyond the individual’s area of expertise, the exceptional candidate will have the ability to foster interdisciplinary collaborations with other departments such as Chemistry and Psychology.
We seek individuals whose research interests complement existing strengths in the department, including intercellular and subcellular signal transduction, ion regulation, cellular/molecular, and behavioral neurobiology. Preference will be given to the candidate whose research interests include altered neural signaling at the cell and molecular level leading to neurophysiological disease and/or behavior. We are especially interested in individuals who can use systemic genomic, proteomic, or metabolomic approaches (e.g., RNA-sequencing, microarray, and other modern techniques requiring bioinformatics analysis) and contribute to the development and expansion of campuswide centers of excellence in neuroscience, biochemistry, and developmental biology.
IUP encourages interdisciplinary collaborations among faculty. As such, we are seeking a broadly-trained neurochemist who can effectively teach introductory/upper-level courses for Biology majors and non-majors, including Introductory Cell Biology for Nursing majors and course(s) in the applicant’s area(s) of specialty. We also expect the successful candidate to contribute to teaching and advising in the Department of Biology programs, including a pre-health program, a Cell and Molecular Biology Track, a Biochemistry program, and an M.S. program. During the interviews, candidates will be expected to present a seminar on their research and may be asked to give a teaching demonstration. Successful candidates are expected to teach a full workload of 12 classroom contact hours per week during the academic semester. The successful candidates will also be expected to contribute to the master’s-level teaching/research mission of the department.
