Students in a class for Asian Studies

Asian Studies involves the study of the languages, cultures, history, and peoples of the continent of Asia. As an Asian Studies major, you'll gain international expertise that is highly valued in business, politics, education, and other areas. Our minor and certificate programs can add an international edge to a variety of degrees.

IUP Students at the Great Wall of China

Our program is designed to increase your knowledge of the world's largest, most populous, and most diverse continent. You'll learn about Asian cultures, societies, and peoples. Asian Studies and the linguistic and cultural skills it provides will give you an international perspective sought after in business and politics and is excellent preparation for graduate programs.

The Asian Studies major has been placed in moratorium, meaning that we will not be accepting new students. The Asian Studies minor and other aspects of the program will continue. Current majors should have been contacted about the moratorium, but if you have any questions, please email Prof. Baumler.

IUP offers instruction in Chinese, Japanese, and Korean languages, and most of our students study abroad. Students also attend intensive language programs in the US. Our students have gone on to careers in business, language teaching (both in the US and Asia), academia, and non-government organizations. They have won major domestic and international scholarships to fund their educations, including the Fullbright, Freeman-Asia, Boron, Gillman, Zhi-Xing China and MEXT-Japan
