Woodworking

The Center for Turning and Furniture Design focuses on the professional development of the emerging artist in wood.

Working in expansive and exceptionally well-equipped studios, the students become familiar with traditional woodworking and furniture design/building processes as well as contemporary technologies and their capabilities. There is a palpable excitement in the shops as students explore wood as a primary means of personal expression. They develop their skills in artistic design and fine craftsmanship while acquiring a larger understanding of contemporary craft.

The Center for Turning and Furniture Design is dedicated to specific curricular goals:

  • Synthesis of traditional and contemporary technologies
  • Resident artist/educators and visiting artists
  • Research and development
  • Interdisciplinary projects
  • Community outreach

Studio space and facilities

The Center for Turning and Furniture Design grew out of a 2003 grant that helped expand the existing Woodworking and Furniture Design program. In 2005, Steve Loar joined the Center as director, with instruction beginning in the newly renovated facilities in January 2006. The Center and the Three-Dimensional Design studio occupy the entire lower level of Sprowls Hall, comprising nearly 9,000 square feet.

Artist-in-residence and visiting artist programs

An ongoing Resident Artist/Educator program was inaugurated in January 2006, bringing students into contact with working professionals who teach a special course in their area of expertise during the Spring semester, using the remainder of their time to conduct research and develop their personal work. Additionally, visiting artists are periodically invited to the Center for shorter lengths of time to share their professional expertise and experiences. The newest residency program provides a supportive environment for aspiring emerging artists to continue with their work.
