About Our Faculty

A professor and student in Cyprus

CYPRUS FIELDWORK John Crowley and Professor Beverly Chiarulli take IUP's ground-penetrating radar equipment out into the fields of Cyprus, where IUP students have found a weight from an ancient olive press and more than 8,000 pieces of pottery, tile and chips of non-native rock during trips coordinated by the History and Anthropology departments.

Bringing passion, perspective, purpose, and experience to the classroom and site

Boasting one of the most active programs on campus, the Anthropology Department is made up of 10 highly respected and energetic professors (Faculty and Staff Directory). With doctoral degrees from leading universities, many come with real-world experience from the private and public sectors, and all bring an enthusiasm and a high level of scholarship to their courses of study.

Because the size of the program is small, students work with faculty to get experience in the field that they would not be able to get in bigger departments.

  • Our professors’ first priority is teaching. While they publish books and papers with leading academic presses and highly regarded journals, their focus is always on teaching their students.
  • All anthropology majors work with an advisor from the Anthropology Department.
  • Every year professors take students with them to archaeological sites and on applied anthropology projects. Past locations include the U.S., Mexico, Panama, Cambodia, Belize, and China.
  • Our faculty is engaged not only in the classroom but also with the many activities that serve the university and greater community.
