It looks like Alternative Spring Break at IUP 2010 will be our biggest year ever!!
IUP’s Alternative Spring Break (ASB at IUP) is a student-run community service organization whose mission is to promote critical thinking, social action, and continued community involvement by combining education and direct service on the local, regional, and national levels.
The ASB experience consists of an intensive week-long service experience in addition to pre-Break training and post-Break activities. Participants will confront a wide range of important social issues that sometimes go unnoticed in a traditional academic setting. Participants will also come into contact with fellow IUP students—ones who, perhaps, they would not otherwise have met.
ASB at IUP believes in the value of diversity because participants gain respect for different perspectives and opinions. By promoting cooperation and working with others, the program seeks to eliminate stereotypes and barriers between peoples of different socioeconomic, ethnic, linguistic, and religious backgrounds. Further, diverse interactions between participants and members of the communities we serve foster a meaningful learning environment that challenges assumptions and promotes critical thinking that can be translated into action both on campus and beyond.
Alternative Spring Break at IUP 2010
Students who have an interest in participating in the Alternative Spring Break Program for 2010 should check here periodically for updates about our plans for next March. This year we are sending out students to seven different locations.
Site leaders need to report to Dr. Finegan’s new office in Pratt Hall (Room 304) sometime in September. Contact him at cfinegan@iup.edu to set up a time to plan for ASB 2010.
