The American Language Institute (ALI) offers full-time, noncredit programs of intensive English for international students and visitors. All courses at ALI are noncredit courses.
- English for Academic Purposes (EAP): Programs for nonnative speakers of English who need preparation in English before starting degree programs at IUP or other U.S. colleges and universities. EAP is a ten-week program in the summer and a fourteen-week program in the fall and spring semesters.
- English for Specific Purposes (ESP): Programs for international students who expect to begin graduate degree programs at IUP or elsewhere. ESP programs are used to improve students’ ability to communicate in English about their specific fields of study.
- Business in English Certificate Program (BinE): A five-week concentration in the world of U.S. business. Students will prepare at ALI in an intensive three-week Business English course, followed by a ten-day Mini-MBA program in the Eberly College of Business.
- English for Visitors (EV): Noncredit courses for tourists, short-term exchange students, and groups of visiting business and professional persons for any four-week period during the summer, as needed.
Only persons with at least the high school diploma or its equivalent are considered for enrollment. ALI has cooperative arrangements with IUP as well as other colleges and universities throughout Pennsylvania and the region to admit academically qualified international students on the condition that they successfully complete the appropriate ALI intensive program. Enrollment in the institute does not constitute admission to IUP degree programs. An applicant to an ALI program should send a completed application form and a $100 nonrefundable application fee. Applications are accepted online. All fees must be paid in the form of an international money order or check drawn on a United States bank or through the IUP Bursar’s Office with MasterCard. Fee are subject to change without notice.
