Standard Application Requirements

The following information must be submitted to IUP’s School of Graduate Studies and Research:

  • Apply on line or download the paper version.
  • Nonrefundable $40 application fee. This fee may be mailed or paid on line after submitting the application for admission.
  • Official transcripts from every college or university attended, including those institutions from which a degree was not obtained. Transcripts must be sealed by the registrar and remain sealed until their arrival at the School of Graduate Studies and Research. Transcripts may be sent directly from the registrar’s office or included with your application materials. IUP undergraduates are not required to submit official transcripts for degree(s) earned at IUP.
  • Letters of recommendation. Most programs require two letters of recommendation. Those requiring three are as follows: 
    • Administration and Leadership Studies, Human Services (Ph.D. - Sociology Dept.)
    • Master of Fine Arts (M.F.A.)
    • Psychology (Psy.D.)
    • Criminology (Ph.D.)

A signed and dated goal statement indicating career and academic goals. Specific goal-statement guidelines for applicants to the Department of Counseling programs (Community Counseling and Counselor Education) are posted on at the Department of Counseling website.

Applicants are strongly encouraged to contact the department administering their program of interest to learn more about additional requirements.

Examples of additional requirements, listed by program, are as follows:

  • Administration and Leadership Studies, Human Services (Ph.D. - Sociology Dept.): GRE scores, résumé, writing sample, three letters of recommendation
  • Adult and Community Education: résumé
  • Adult Education and Communications Technology: résumé
  • Applied Archaeology: GRE scores
  • Art: Three letters of recommendation, slides
  • Business: GMAT scores
  • Business (Executive Track): GMAT scores, résumé
  • Business/Workforce, M.Ed. program (all specializations/tracks): Fall 2009: None; Spring 2010: must take the GMAT or GRE to be considered for admission.
  • Clinical Psychology: Three letters of recommendation, GRE scores (including subject test scores)
  • Criminology (Ph.D): Three letters of recommendation, GRE scores, writing sample
  • Curriculum and Instruction (D.Ed.): On-line writing sample and five-minute video presentation. These items are to be submitted directly to the Department of Professional Studies in Education (PSE). Additional information can be found on the PSE website. Education (MEDU): Must attend one information session.
  • Educational and School Psychology: GRE scores; Praxis II (School Psychology (D.Ed.) and post-certification applicants)
  • Elementary Education: Praxis I test (PPST: Pre-professional Skills Test) and five-minute video presentation. This should be submitted directly to the Department of Professional Studies in Education. Additional information is located online at the PSE website. 
  • Food and Nutrition: GRE scores
  • Geography: GRE scores
  • History: GRE scores
  • Music Education: Photocopy of current teacher certification in music education (to be submitted directly to the Department of Music)
  • Music Performance: Schedule performance audition (contact performance area faculty directly)
  • Music History and Literature: Two sample research papers/writing samples (to be submitted directly to the Department of Music)
  • Music Theory and Composition: Sample compositions (to be submitted directly to the Department of Music)
  • Nursing (Ph.D.): Recent, official GRE scores including analytical writing; Current nursing license; Current curriculum vitae
  • Public Affairs: GRE scores
  • Safety Sciences: résumé
  • Sociology: GRE scores
  • Speech-Language Pathology: Evidence of passing the Praxis I or GRE scores with a combined verbal and quantitative score of 900 or higher.
  • Student Affairs in Higher Education (SAHE): résumé, SAHE Personal Data Form, student affairs interest statement. Please submit SAHE items to IUP’s SAHE Department, Stouffer Hall, Room 226, Indiana, PA 15705. Two letters of recommendation (one professional and one academic) are to be submitted directly to the School of Graduate Studies and Research.
