  <content:encoded><![CDATA[<p class="introduction">IUP’s <a title="Labor Center" href="https://www.iup.edu:443/WorkArea/linkit.aspx?LinkIdentifier=id&amp;ItemID=19493">Center for the Study of Labor Relations</a> and the <a title="Employment and Labor Relations" href="https://www.iup.edu:443/WorkArea/linkit.aspx?LinkIdentifier=id&amp;ItemID=3831">Department of Employment and Labor Relations</a> are cosponsoring a one-day Conflict Resolution class to be held at the Rustic Lodge in Indiana, Pa., on Friday, December 11, 2009.</p>
<p>Conflict is defined as a “struggle” between two individuals or groups who perceive their goals as incompatible. This seminar is designed to address the two dimensions of conflict—the issue of the conflict and the emotions surrounding the conflict—and provides insight into how conflict can be managed and resolved.</p>

<p><strong>Presenter:</strong> Dr. David Piper, D.Ed., Associate Professor, Employment and Labor Relations, IUP, Indiana, Pennsylvania<br />
Dr. David M. Piper has been involved in public sector administration and labor relations since 1986. He started his career as the director of Business Affairs for the Bedford Area School District. In 1989, he moved to the Mount Union Area School District and held similar roles, being responsible for the districtwide business operations and the implementation of a computerized financial accounting, payroll, and child accounting package, as well as the negotiations and administration of all labor contracts. In addition, Dr. Piper served as the technology chair for the district and was the architect of Mount Union’s Making Connections for the Future, a project that provided major technology improvements to the classrooms and a professional development plan for the teachers of the junior-senior high school. This initiative received both the State and National Awards of Achievement from the Association of School Business Officials.</p>
<p>In 2001, Dr. Piper left Mount Union to become the assistant to the superintendent for the Altoona Area School District. During his tenure, Dr. Piper was the project leader for the creation of the Central Pennsylvania Digital Learning Foundation, a consortium of thirty-two public schools that created a digital public school that has 180 students enrolled.</p>
<p>In 2003, Dr. Piper joined the faculty of the Industrial and Labor Relations Department of Indiana University of Pennsylvania as an associate professor. He teaches courses in Conflict Resolution, Contract Administration, Human Resource Management, Organizational Leadership, Public Sector Labor Relations, Fundamentals of Labor Relations, School Finance, and Research and Statistics. In 2008, Dr. Piper coauthored the textbook <em>Pennsylvania School Business: A Guide for Educational Administrators</em> with Dale Keagy. He is also a practicing arbitrator and mediator for the Pennsylvania Department of Labor, Bureau of Mediation.</p>
<p>Dr. Piper has a Bachelor of Science in Business Administration, a Master of Business Administration, a Master of Arts in Industrial and Labor Relations, and a Doctorate of Education in Administration and Leadership Studies from Indiana University of Pennsylvania. Dr. Piper is actively involved with the Pennsylvania Association of School Business Officials and the Association for the Advancement of Computing in Education. He also serves as a guest speaker for topics including conflict resolution, dispute resolution, and organizational leadership. He is also a deputy coroner for Indiana County.</p>

  <content:encoded><![CDATA[<p class="introduction">Indiana University of Pennsylvania’s <a href="https://www.iup.edu:443/WorkArea/linkit.aspx?LinkIdentifier=id&amp;ItemID=19493" title="Labor Center">Center for the Study of Labor Relations</a>, in cooperation with the Pennsylvania Bureau of Workers’ Compensation and the Bureau of PENNSAFE, is sponsoring a half-day Recertification Training for Workers’ Compensation Safety Committees to be held at two locations: Thursday, November 19, 2009 (Blairsville, Pa.) and Thursday, December 3, 2009 (Duncansville, Pa.).</p>
<p>This annual training is designed for all companies (individually insured, group insured, and self-insured) and satisfies one of the main requirements of the state’s Safety Committee Workers’ Compensation Discount Program, leading to a 5 percent discount on companies’ workers’ compensation insurance premiums. This conference also offers the opportunity for those companies that are not currently certified to learn how to complete the necessary documentation for the certification process.</p>

<p><em>Buried: The Sago Mine Disaster,</em> a play written by Jerry Starr with musical arrangements by Anne Feeney, focuses on the aftermath of the January 2006 West Virginia mine explosion that claimed the lives of twelve men and severely disabled another. It celebrates the courage of the victims' wives and daughters who organized a campaign to seek answers, justice, and ultimately the nation's first major mine safety legislation in more than thirty years.</p>
<p><em>Buried</em> is based on thousands of pages of hearing transcriptions and media interviews, along with extensive background research of the issues. The play premiered with an equity cast at Pittsburgh Playwrights December 2006.</p>]]></content:encoded>

<p>Author of the widely acclaimed book, <em>When Smoke Ran Like Water: Tales of Environmental Deception and the Battle Against Pollution</em> (Basic Books, 2002), which won a National Book Award (the first book on the environment to win this award since Silent Spring) epidemiologist <strong>Devra Davis</strong> is one of the world's most visible and outspoken advocates for improvingthe environment to protect public health.</p>
<p>Dr. Davis is visiting professor at Carnegie Mellon University's Heinz School as well as honorary professor, London's School of Hygiene and Tropical Medicine, and an expert advisor to the World Health Organization. President Bill Clinton appointed Dr. Davis to the Chemical Safety and Hazard Investigation Board, (1994–99), an independent executive branch agency that investigates, prevents, and mitigates chemical accidents.</p>
<p>As the former senior advisor to the Assistant Secretary for Health in the Department of Health and Human Services, she has counseled leading officials in the United States, United Nations, World Health Organization and World Bank. She was also a distinguished visiting professor at the Yeshiva University and Stem College for 1996–97 and scholar in residence and executive director of the Board on Environmental Studies and Toxicology at the U.S. National Research Council, of the National Academy of Science, 1983–93.</p>
<p>Dr. Davis holds a B.S. in physiological psychology and a M.A. in sociology from the University of Pittsburgh. She completed a Ph.D. in science studies at the University of Chicago, as a Danforth Foundation Graduate Fellow and a M.P.H. in epidemiology at the Johns Hopkins University, as a Senior National Cancer Institute Post-Doctoral Fellow. She has also authored more than 170 publications.</p>]]></content:encoded>
