This event will be held from 6:00 to 7:15 p.m. in the Ohio Room of the HUB. It is free and open to the public.

Rios grew up in Oakland, California, in the 1980s and ’90s. A former gang member and juvenile delinquent, Rios escaped the dismal fate of many of his friends and earned a Ph.D. at the University of California, Berkeley. He is now an associate professor of sociology at the University of California, Santa Barbara.

He conducted a three-year sociological study of how young Latino and African-American boys in Oakland develop their selfhood and worldview in the midst of pervasive crime and intense policing. His lecture and book by the same title examine the lives of the young men in his study, who face punitive policies and limited opportunities in their schools and communities.

Rios has been interviewed on NPR’s program On Point and on the PBS News Hour.
Rios’s book is owned by the IUP Libraries and will be available for purchase for $19 at the Six O’Clock Series and at the Coop Store, as supplies last.
