All university residence halls, apartments, and suites will be closed at the end of the Spring 2013 semester. Residents are asked to notify their community assistant of the day and approximate time they expect to check out of their residence hall, apartment, or suite.

Building Closing

All students except graduating seniors must vacate their room/apartment/suite no later than 24 hours after their last final examination. Students with final exams on Thursday, May 16, must vacate their room/apartment/suite no later than 10:00 a.m. on Friday, May 17. Graduating seniors may remain in their room/apartment/suite (only if they sign up in their hall office by Sunday, May 12) until 4:00 p.m. on Saturday, May 18, but must complete all checkout procedures prior to that time by making special arrangements with the staff responsible for that building.

At checkout, students must return all room/apartment/suite keys to a staff member in their building. A community assistant will complete an inspection of the room/apartment/suite at that time and compare the condition of the room/apartment/suite to the information recorded on the Room/Apartment/Suite Condition Form at check-in. Residents are encouraged to initiate the checkout process with a staff member from their particular floor. It is the student’s responsibility to bring damaged and/or missing items to a staff member’s attention prior to completing checkout. Students will receive the blue copy of the Room/Apartment/Suite Condition Form upon completion of the checkout process. All damages and/or missing items will result in an assessment of charges at the current cost of materials and labor. After closing, the building director will conduct a final room/apartment/suite inspection to insure the accuracy and appropriateness of any student billings.

Each resident must clean his/her portion of the room/apartment/suite so that it is left in the condition it was found at check-in. All articles and possessions must be removed from the room/apartment/suite, including such materials as shelf paper, rugs, bricks, wood frames, etc., prior to the preliminary inspection. Nothing should be left in drawers and closets or under beds. Trash cans should be completely emptied. All furnishings must be returned to their original position prior to the preliminary inspection.

Residents should consult with a residence life staff member to determine specific checkout times in their building.

There will be a $50 fee for failure to return a room/apartment/suite key.

Failure to check out properly or failure to leave the room/apartment/suite in an acceptable condition will result in the assessment of a $25 fee for improper check out. Residents of University Towers, Delaney, Putt, Ruddock, Suites on Maple East, Suites on Pratt, Wallwork, Stephenson, and Northern Suites are reminded to clean their kitchen, bathroom, living room, and bedroom. Failure to clean these areas may result in additional charges.

Belongings cannot be stored in any building after Spring semester closing.

Please complete the following before leaving:

Remove all personal belongings.

Clean room and completely empty trash cans.

Close all windows and leave shades pulled halfway.

Return all keys to a staff member and have room/apartment inspected.

Sign and receive a copy of the Room/Apartment/Suite Condition Form.

Turn out lights, lock door.

Dining Halls

The dining hall closing schedule is as follows:

Foster Dining Hall, Saturday, May 18, 12:00 p.m. (noon)

Folger Food Court, Thursday, May 16, 9:00 p.m.

HUB Rock, Thursday, May 16, 8:00 p.m.

Java City Library, Thursday, May 16, 2:00 p.m.

Eberly Cafe, Friday, May 10, 4:30 p.m.

Oak Room, Friday, May 10, 1:30 p.m.

POD (Wallwork), Thursday, May 16, 7:00 p.m.

POD (Putt), Friday, May 17, 4:00 p.m.

Please refer any special circumstances regarding checkout to your residence hall director. Good luck on finals, and have a great summer!

All university residence halls, apartments, and suites will be closed at the end of the Spring semester. Residents are asked to notify their community assistant (CA) of the day and approximate time they expect to check out of their residence hall, apartment, or suite.

Building Closing

All students except graduating seniors must vacate their room/apartment/suite no later than 24 hours after their last final examination. Students with final exams on Thursday, May 10, must vacate their room/apartment/suite no later than 10:00 a.m. on Friday, May 11. Graduating seniors may remain in their room/apartment/suite (only if they sign up in their hall office by Wednesday, May 2) until 6:00 p.m. on Saturday, May 12, but must complete all checkout procedures prior to that time by making special arrangements with the staff responsible for that building.

Residents should consult with a residence life staff member to determin specific checkout times in their building.

All university residence halls, apartments, and suites will be closed at the end of the Spring semester. Residents are asked to notify their community assistant of the day and approximate time they expect to check out of their residence hall, apartment, or suite.

Building Closing

All students, except graduating seniors, must vacate their room/apartment/suite no later than twenty-four hours after their last final examination. Students with final exams on Friday, May 6, must vacate their room/apartment/suite no later than noon on Saturday, May 7. Graduating seniors may remain in their room/apartment/suite (only if they sign up in their hall office by noon on Friday, May 6) until 4:00 p.m. on Saturday, May 7, but must complete all checkout procedures prior to that time by making special arrangements with the staff responsible for that building.

It is the student's responsibility to bring damaged and/or missing items to a staff member's attention prior to completing checkout. Students will receive the blue copy of the Room/Apartment/Suite Condition Form upon completion of the checkout process. All damages and/or missing items will result in an assessment of charges at the current cost of materials and labor. After closing, the building director will conduct a final room/apartment/suite inspection to ensure the accuracy and appropriateness of any student billings.

There will be a $50 fee for failure to return a room/apartment/suite key.

Failure to check out properly or failure to leave the room/apartment/suite in an acceptable condition will result in the assessment of a $25 fee for improper checkout.

IUP is sponsoring a survey to determine your views and preferences regarding dining services on campus.

The survey is being conducted by the independent food service consulting firm Envision Strategies, of Greenwood Village, Colo., as part of a strategic planning effort to determine the future direction of the campus dining program. We believe that the opinions of every member of the IUP community should be heard, which is why we are encouraging you to participate in this very important survey.

Look for an e-mail during the week of April 15 inviting you to take the survey. Please consider the time it takes you to respond (about ten to fifteen minutes) as an investment in the future of dining services at IUP.

Participation in the survey is voluntary, and you have the option to stop taking the survey at any time once you begin. Your responses will be kept strictly confidential and will not be identified as you.

You will have an opportunity to complete the survey until Friday, April 22, 2011.

From all those who complete the survey, one participant will be selected at random to win an iPad 2 (16 GB, Wi-Fi and smart cover).

If you have any questions pertaining to this survey, please contact the Office of Housing and Residence Life by e-mail at IUP-OHRL@iup.edu or by phone at 724-357-2696.

Quite simply, P.O.D. is committed to giving people the stuff they want when they want it.

IUP Dining Services is pleased to recognize Chef Kevin Hodgkinson for earning second place at the Eastern Regional ACE (ARAMARK Culinary Excellence) competition held in March 2010. He will now represent the Eastern Region ACE culinary team at the National ACE Challenge on July 25, 2010, in San Francisco.

The Eastern Regional ACE competition featured top higher education chefs from the eastern region. Each of the participating chefs was selected because he or she consistently strives for culinary excellence and is focused on surpassing customers' expectations with great meals. Each regional competition featured eight chefs who presented a three-course meal to five judges. The chefs prepared one show plate each for the students and judges and a taster plate for each judge. Each chef had four hours to prepare their meals from prep to finish.

Chef Hodgkinson, one of three finalists from the eastern region, will next compete for the coveted “Copper Pot” at the ARAMARK Culinary Excellence National Challenge. Chefs representing all nine ARAMARK regions will compete.

Chef Hodgkinson has been the catering chef at IUP for two years. Prior to joining the IUP Dining Services team, he worked at the Hilton Hotel and Towers in downtown Pittsburgh for thirteen years. Chef Hodgkinson is a graduate of the American Culinary Federation program at the Community College of Allegheny County.

The 2010 ACE Challenge provides an opportunity for the organization to recognize the talents and creativity of its culinary staff from across the United States and Canada. The competition also provides ARAMARK chefs with the opportunity to showcase their culinary expertise with a broader audience in a competitive environment.

The ACE Program recognizes and rewards outstanding chefs throughout ARAMARK-managed higher education accounts, and provides the opportunity for the chefs to share their culinary expertise with a broader audience in an environment that is both competitive and stimulating.

For further information on the competition, please contact Jennifer Braughler, ARAMARK marketing coordinator, at 724-357-3102.

All university residence halls, apartments, and suites will be closed at the end of the Spring 2010 semester.

Residents are asked to notify their community assistant of the day and approximate time they expect to check out of their residence hall, apartment, or suite.

Building Closing

All students, except graduating seniors, must vacate their room/apartment/suite no later than twenty-four hours after their last final examination. Students with final exams on Friday, May 7, must vacate their room/apartment/suite no later than noon on Saturday, May 8. Graduating seniors may remain in their room/apartment/suite (only if they sign up in their hall office by noon on Friday, May 7) until 4:00 p.m. on Sunday, May 9, but must complete all checkout procedures prior to that time by making special arrangements with the staff responsible for that building.

Residents should consult with a residence life staff member to determine specific checkout times in their building

There will be a $50 fee for failure to return a room/apartment/suite key.

Failure to checkout properly or failure to leave the room/apartment in an acceptable condition will result in the assessment of a $25 fee for improper checkout.

Residents of University Towers, Delaney, Putt, Suites on Maple East/West, Suites on Pratt, Wallwork, and Northern Suites are reminded to clean their kitchen, bathroom, living room, and bedroom. Failure to clean these areas may result in additional charges.

Belongings cannot be stored in any building after Spring semester closing.

Please complete the following before leaving:

Remove all personal belongings.

Clean room and completely empty trash cans.

Close all windows and leave shades pulled halfway.

The following is from a letter sent to IUP from Aramark:

Dear Valued Client,

We understand that as your partner, the events of our company are a reflection on you as well. While we tend to be a modest company, during these challenging economic times we also recognize the importance to our employees, customers, and clients of celebrating success when it is achieved. Many of our clients have also requested we keep them informed of the events that shape our company.

With that request in mind, I am proud to announce that Aramark has once again been ranked No. 1 in its industry on Fortune magazine’s list of “World’s Most Admired Companies” for 2010. This marks the third straight year in which Aramark has been named industry champion. The company has placed among the top three in this category each year since 1998, and has ranked No. 1 six times in the past nine years. Aramark topped the rankings in nearly all of the list’s criteria, which include quality of services offered to clients, innovation, quality of the management team, and financial soundness.

Fortune is just one of many organizations that recognize the value we offer. In addition, the Ethisphere Institute, a leading international think tank dedicated to best practices in business ethics, corporate social responsibility, anticorruption, and sustainability, just named Aramark as one of the World’s Most Ethical Companies. Companies are evaluated according to seven categories: Corporate Citizenship and Responsibility; Corporate Governance; Innovation that Contributes to the Public Well Being; Industry Leadership; Executive Leadership; Legal, Regulatory, and Reputation Track Record; and Internal Systems and Ethics/Compliance Program.

We are also proud that in the past year, Aramark has been named among the country’s “Best Places to Launch a Career” by BusinessWeek magazine; the Global Outsourcing 100, which recognizes companies that provide the best service worldwide; and America’s largest private companies by both Forbes and Fortune magazines. We have also been recognized for many solutions we offer our clients, including several awards for excellence, innovation, and environmentally friendly solutions.

I want to thank you for playing such an important role in our continued success. While we prefer to celebrate our success through the measurable results we achieve for our clients, we hope you find this information of interest. To read our press release and other recent news, please visit our website.

The following is a letter from Adam Friedman, who serves as president of the IUP Residence Hall Association.

Dear IUP Faculty and Staff:

I write to invite you to attend this year’s Freshman Convocation. Going into my fourth year study at IUP, I have been to a few convocations during my tenure here. I feel that it is an important part of the freshman experience. Convocation provides freshman students with a sense of solidarity from the beginning of their college career. It is important to instill that sense of belonging from the beginning of their time here so that they will continue their education.

My first Freshman Convocation in the Fall of 2006 was very memorable for a couple of reasons. I remember being awe struck at the sheer number of people gathered for this event. There were students everywhere, and they were all there for a singular purpose–to learn. The crowd was not just students. Throughout the room there were faculty and staff members sitting side by side with the students. I remember feeling a bit of pride looking around the room at the professors, some of them laughing and talking and getting to know their students.

Connections are an important part of college, not just with our fellow students but with those teaching us, our professors. Convocation is that opportunity for you to get to know the faces and the names of those you are helping. I encourage you to attend this year’s convocation.

Sincerely,

Adam Friedman
Residence Hall Association President

P.S. The Freshman Convocation takes place at 5:30 p.m. on Sunday, August 30, in Fisher Auditorium. This year's guest speaker is Samuel Heastie, a member of the Educational Leadership faculty at Fayetteville State University. Remarks also will be provided by Gian Pagnucci, this year's University Professor; Alyssa Stiles, president of Student Government Association, and President Tony Atwater. All who attend are invited to a cook out in the Oak Grove immediately following the convocation. Freshman Convocation is part of Welcome Weekend activities.
