Live peer tutoring is available during all Summer sessions through the IUP Online Writing Center. The Online Writing Center will be available from 6:00 to 9:00 p.m. on Tuesday, Wednesday, and Thursday evenings beginning May 22, 2013.

The Online Writing Center uses WebEx, a Web conferencing platform, to provide real-time interaction between students and tutors. Similar to Skype and other conferencing tools, the Online Writing Center lets students share their screen with a Writing Center tutor and talk to the tutor using a microphone and speakers. A tutor can then provide comments and suggestions so students can revise their papers as they work together. The tutor can also provide Web resources to help with proofreading, formatting references, and other tasks.

We recommend that students have a working microphone and speakers, a high-speed Internet connection, and the latest version of Java. Users will not be asked to download anything or create a WebEx account, but will need to allow the conferencing software to run. Check to see if your computer meets the minimum system requirements.

Online appointments are conducted no sooner than 24 hours after the time that students make an appointment. For example, if a student accesses the online appointment calendar at 7:00 p.m. on a Monday night, the soonest he or she will be able to meet with a tutor is 7:00 p.m. on Tuesday.

To access the appointment calendar and download helpful instructions for how to use the Online Writing Center, visit the Writing Center’s website and click “Meet Us Online.” Students and professors will have access to an instructional video, a downloadable instruction guide, and the link to the SetMore appointment calendar.

Students and professors are also invited to ask the Writing Center questions on our Facebook page, by tweeting @IUPWriting, or by calling us at 724-357-3029.

Over the past year, the IUP Writing Center has launched two programs that engage students and faculty in discussions and workshops outside the classroom.

The weekly Wednesday Workshop series has run for three semesters, giving students the chance to attend some of our most popular writing workshops without having to come for a specific class. Topics typically include proofreading, MLA and APA documentation, and revising research papers. The monthly Lunch and Learn series, launched in Fall 2012, invites students and faculty to discuss topics with expert faculty members. We’ve had roundtable discussions on such topics as digital literacy, the clash between superheroes and academia, and National Novel Writing Month.

As we enter our second and third years of these programs, we would like student and faculty input about the benefits of and opportunities to strengthen these programs. Tutors will conduct two group interviews about these programs on Wednesday, April 24, and Wednesday, May 1, from 5:00–6:00 p.m. in the Writing Center workshop room (218 Eicher Hall). Pizza and beverages will be provided.

If you would like to participate, please register online by April 23.

In this presentation, Writing Center tutors will explain how research writing often works like a conversation between speakers with different voices. Students learn to identify the “voices” in a text and compose a piece of writing that incorporates their own voice with the various voices of their sources. “Hearing Voices” offers a helpful perspective on how to compose a research paper that flows smoothly.

All Wednesday Workshop programs are free and open to IUP students and last about an hour.

In addition to the September 19 program, future presentations in the series are as follows:

Proofreading

Wednesday, Sept. 26

Do you have trouble seeing mistakes in grammar and punctuation in their writing? Maybe you’re using the wrong strategy when you read. This workshop shows you how to find errors and correct them.

The satellite is located just past the Reference Desk on the first floor of Stapleton. It will be staffed by two peer tutors from 8:00 to 11:00 p.m., Monday–Thursday, and 5:00 to 10:00 p.m., Sunday. No appointment is needed.

“Since the library is where many students study and do their research, it will be helpful for them to have writing tutors as well as reference librarians readily available,” said Professor Ben Rafoth, director of the Writing Center.

Tutors will have a library-issued laptop in order to find online materials such as style and documentation guides, according to Luis Gonzalez, dean of IUP Libraries.

As always, students are encouraged to bring their paper, assignment, syllabus, and any notes or outlines. Tutors will send a faculty report upon the student’s request.

The satellite is a collaboration of the Writing Center, IUP Libraries, and the College of Humanities and Social Sciences.

Tough Mudders are 12.5-mile endurance events with obstacle courses designed by the British Special Forces. These weekend events regularly attract 15,000–20,000 participants. Since the event series began in May 2010, half a million participants have raised more than $3 million for the Wounded Warrior Project, an organization that cares for veterans.

More than 20,000 people, including wounded veterams. participated in the Ohio and Poconos events. To keep the event running smoothly, the event organizers released 600 people every 15 minutes beginning at 8 a.m. and continuing until 2 p.m.

“All of us took that challenge on together,” James said. “We helped each other pull through the obstacles, through the cold, through everything.”

In both of James’ heats, the temperature never peaked 50 degrees, and water obstacles ranged from 28 to 38 degrees Fahrenheit.

James said the most challenging obstacle was “the 30-foot plunge into a 28-degree lake, which I then had to swim across, all after having run 10 miles already. That was a challenge.”

Like James, many IUP Writing Center tutors serve as volunteers and fundraisers in organizations and events throughout the year.

Zied Eldakan visited the Writing Center to meet with Ben Rafoth, Writing Center director; Michele Petrucci, Office of International Education; and tutors and faculty on April 3, 2012.

Eldakan (photo, left) is working with Khalid Abalhassan, a 2002 graduate of IUP’s Composition and TESOL program (formerly Rhetoric and Linguistics) and the general directorate of research and information in the Ministry of Higher Education in Saudi Arabia.

They have been working on plans for Saudi Arabia’s first university writing center since 2010. The largest university in Saudi Arabia, King Abdulaziz University enrolls approximately 50,000 students on campus and another 70,000 students online.

Writing Center peer tutors presented writing instruction technology and strategies for tutoring multilingual student writers.

“He was very enthusiastic,” Writing Center tutor Tori Loch said. “He wanted to hear from us.”

The president of the International Writing Centers Association and director of the West Virginia University Writing Center, Nathalie Singh-Corcoran, was also in attendance (photo, right).

She discussed the mission and purposes of the IWCA, including the 11 regional writing center associations that make up the association. This includes the Middle East North Africa Writing Centers Association and the European Writing Centers Association.

Rafoth (photo, center) said these scholars are on the cutting edge of higher education and progressive reform in their country.

“Dr. Eldakan’s visit was the first step in an exchange of ideas and talent between IUP and King Abdulaziz University. There is an opportunity for them to learn more about tutoring writing in English and the potential of writing centers to influence curricular and instructional reforms,” Rafoth said.

Rafoth was the keynote speaker at the Mid-Atlantic Writing Centers Association conference in Shippensburg on March 31. Eldakan attended this conference with Rafoth to learn more about peer tutoring practices.

Two Writing Center tutors presented the newly developed Online Writing Center at the conference: Melissa Lutz, of Homer City; and Emily Weber, of Souderton.

A word lost to the English vocabulary since the 1930s was recently rediscovered by an IUP Writing Center tutor.

A casual use of the word disgruntled gave rise to the question of whether a person could be gruntled as well as disgruntled.

The immediate response among tutors in the Writing Center was disbelief, and the existence of gruntled was widely denied. “No way,” said bystanders. “If that's a word, I'll eat my keyboard,” said a receptionist. In fact, a dictionary check in Microsoft Word proved that there was no such word.

Undaunted, tutor Emily Weber, a Journalism and English double major, pressed forward with her theory that gruntled was likely a root form, with dis- being a prefix, and the search was on.

Weber read aloud from the Oxford English Dictionary: “It says gruntled is an adjective meaning “pleased, satisfied, contented.”

According to the OED, the undisputed authority on lost, forgotten, and misplaced words, the word first appeared in print in 1938 by P. G. Wodehouse in Code of Woosters, the third full-length novel to feature two of Wodehouse's best-known characters, Bertie Wooster and his valet Jeeves.

IUP Writing Center tutors welcomed the news with giddy excitement. Some looked up from their computer screens, while others tapped pencils.

“This is a truly significant discovery because behind every word is a human thought,” said Ben Rafoth, director of the Writing Center. “Every vocabulary word represents an important part of our intellectual history.”

“The fact that we now have rediscovered a word that means ‘pleased, satisfied, contented’ provides a nuance for authors, editors, and speakers to convey evermore precise meaning,” Rafoth opined.

Tutor Tori Loch, an English Education major, claimed that she was already familiar with the word and had “seen it in books.” If true, this could diminish the potential significance of Weber’s discovery. Further investigation may be warranted.

“I’m a little disgruntled that I never knew the word gruntled,” said Mitch James, a doctoral candidate and assistant director of the Writing Center.“But I am gruntled for Weber’s discovery,” he shared.

The annual Celebration of Learning at IUP Punxsutawney, held December 12, 2011, featured projects by students in writing, literature, world religions, and information technology courses during Fall semester.

The event was hosted by the IUP Punxsutawney Writing Center and coordinated by director Lynn Shelly.

Prizes were awarded for overall best project and runner-up, as well as for best video, best poster for world religions, and best artwork. Projects were judged on the basis of content, creativity, and effort by four representatives from IUP main campus.

The award for best project went to Joie Hight, an English 100 student, who designed and created out of wood a pyramid decorated with hieroglyphics. The pyramid represents her response to a reading selection titled, "Fearing Death/Maintaining a Positive Attitude."

"The projects on display were creative and thoughtful. It was obvious that students put a lot of work into them," said Lindsay Sabatino, a teaching associate in the English Department on main campus. "The celebration event is a good community-builder, and Dr. Shelly has designed it so that students support each other."

Also attending were three tutors from the IUP Writing Center on main campus: Laurin Jefferson, John Baker, and Richard Shook.

Mitch James, doctoral candidate and assistant director of the Writing Center, developed the workshop, which focused on the information that should be included in personal statements, how to organize this information concisely, and how to self-edit and peer-review a completed draft. The workshop was conducted in four 55-minute class sessions for a two-week period.

Rita Johnson, associate professor in the Department of Food and Nutrition, was pleased with the results. “The presentation style and seamless application of writing theory made the process of writing and editing self-statements/application letters less intimidating,” she said. The students found the workshops so beneficial that a majority of them stayed after class to work on their statements.

Johnson said she's always delighted when a new classroom/teaching idea is such a success and the workshop benefited her as well. “I’m trying not to reach for my pencil when students give me a draft of their writing, but to read and ask questions instead,” Johnson noted.

IUP professors or students who are interested in how the Writing Center can assist with writing assignments are invited to contact any member of the staff by e-mail at w-center@iup.edu or by phone at 724-357-3029.

A new book on writing centers, co-authored by two IUP alumni, has been published by Columbia University’s Teachers College Press. Drs. Dawn Fels and Jennifer Wells, graduates of IUP’s nationally-recognized doctoral program in Composition and TESOL, recently published The Successful High School Writing Center: Building the Best Program with Your Students. The book is also being released by the National Writing Project, UC Berkeley.

Dr. Dawn Fels teaches composition and directs the Writing Center at George Mason University. Dr. Jennifer Wells is the director of the Reading-Writing Center at Florida State University. According to composition scholar Dr. Richard Kent of the University of Maine, “The Successful High School Wtriting Center is a book that holds transformational power. It is an immediately useful book, yes, but also a critical collection imbued with theory-to-practice models that address our marginalized students and their teachers.”

Contributors to the book also include alumnus Dr. Kevin Dvorak, who teaches composition at Nova Southeastern University, and current doctoral student Andrew Jeter, who founded and directs the Literacy Center at Niles West High School in Skokie, Illinois. Dr. Ben Rafoth, IUP University Professor and director of the IUP Writing Center, and Drs. Fels and Wells co-authored the opening chapter of the book, “The Promise of Change with One-to-One Instruction.”

The book highlights the work of talented teachers and tutors who connect theory and practice with the lessons they learned from working with students in their high school writing centers. The authors offer innovative methods for secondary and post-secondary educators interested in adolescent literacy, English language learners, new literacies, writing center pedagogy and evaluation, embedded professional development, differentiated instruction, and cross-institutional collaboration.

Drs. Fels and Wells completed their dissertations under the supervision of Dr. Rafoth. Andrew Jeter is currently working on his dissertation, under the supervision of Dr. Rafoth.

IUP Writing Center director Dr. Ben Rafoth and three Writing Center tutors visited West Virginia University on November 12, 2011, for a special colloquium focused on the theme of creating writing center learning cultures. Twenty-one tutors and their directors from Duquesne University, WVU, and IUP attended the invitation-only event.

According to Dr. Rafoth, the event afforded everyone an opportunity to learn about research and practice in writing centers at the three universities. Tutors and directors from each of the three schools made presentations on online writing centers (IUP), conceptual learning spaces (Duquesne), and re-imagining the pedagogical theories that inform tutoring (WVU).

Besides Dr. Rafoth, also attending from IUP were Mitch James, assistant director of the IUP Writing Center, and Lindsay Sabatino, a teaching associate in the English Department. Both are Ph.D. candidates in IUP’s Composition and TESOL doctoral program. Melissa Faith Lutz, a senior English major and tutor in the Writing Center, also attended the colloquium and presented with the IUP team.

“This annual colloquium showcases the cutting-edge work at three universities in our region with very innovative and professionally active writing centers,” said Dr. Nathalie Singh-Corcoran, director of the WVU writing center.

Drs. Rafoth and Singh-Corcoran are co-hosts of the International Writing Centers Association Summer Institute in July 2012 at Seven Springs Mountain Resort, near Pittsburgh. The Writing Centers Summer Institute attracts writing center directors from across the U.S. and around the world for one week of intensive study, planning, and discussion. Dr. Singh-Corcoran is president of the International Writing Centers Association. Dr. Ben Rafoth’s most recent book (with Shanti Bruce) is ESL Writers: A Guide for Writing Center Tutors.

The IUP Writing Center, located in 218 Eicher Hall, assists over 1,500 students each semester with their writing assignments. An innovative online writing center was launched in September and is open to all IUP students.

Students who are taking online classes, who are off-campus, or who cannot visit the Writing Center can now get assistance with their writing assignments from IUP’s Online Writing Center.

The IUP Online Writing Center conducts tutoring sessions using Google programs that make it easy for students to schedule an appointment online and then share their paper with a tutor. Using chat and screen-share features, the tutor and student can work on the paper together.

According to Dr. Ben Rafoth, director of the IUP Online Writing Center and professor of English, the OWC has already helped about one hundred students since last semester when it began. “It’s ideal for students who would like to get help from a tutor, but cannot come to the Writing Center,” Dr. Rafoth said.

During an online tutoring session, the student and tutor use a chat screen to discuss the paper, usually beginning with a question from the tutor: “How can I help you?” It’s important for the writer to describe the assignment and one or two areas of concern. The tutor will offer comments and suggestions that the student can use to revise their paper. Tutors can also provide Web resources to help students proofread their papers and format the references.

“Using the OWC is easy,” says Mitch James, assistant director of the Writing Center. “It begins with scheduling an appointment and becoming familiar with a few instructions.” First, students should visit the Writing Center website and select “Meet Us Online.” The next step is to log in and make an appointment on Google Calendar (at least forty-eight hours in advance). Once the appointment is accepted, the tutor will be ready at the appointed time. Instructions are provided on the website for how to upload and share papers with the online tutor.

The IUP Online Writing Center is part of the IUP Writing Center, which is still open for walk-in tutoring days and evenings in 218 Eicher Hall, located on Grant Street across from the Wallwork Suites. For more information, visit the IUP Writing Center website, or call 724-357-3029.
