A paper by James Rodger, professor of MIS and Decision Sciences, Eberly College of Business, has been accepted for presentation at the DBS 9th International Conference on Environmental, Cultural, Economic, and Social Sustainability, to be held in Hiroshima, Japan, in January 2013.

In “Sustainable Economies and Energy Strategy,” Rodger explores a sustainable economic model that preserves positive dynamics of capitalism while improving collaboration between government and industry to engineer economic performance from optimizing return on national, regional, and local resources.

This new work draws on Smart Data, Enterprise Performance Optimization Strategy, coauthored by Rodger and J. A. George (Wiley-Blackwell, New York, 2010). Optimizing return on resources begins at the lowest levels of people representation and political leadership that are encouraged to address prescriptive tasks. They demonstrate application of collaborative government and private enterprise initiatives toward developing a sustainable energy strategy and policy, using Marcellus shale mining as a case example because one author lives in the region where this is a developing asset and is familiar with the instance.

This paper reports on a new integrated vehicle health maintenance system (IVHMS) based on fault detection and feedback. A fuzzy multi-sensor data fusion Kalman model was used to help reduce IVHMS failure risk. The IVHMS was tested, and sensors with and without faults were identified. The results demonstrate that multi-sensor data fusion based on fault detection and fuzzy Kalman feedback is an effective method of reducing risk in an IVHMS. Use of the fuzzy Kalman filter approach reduced the time needed to perform complex matrix manipulations to control higher order systems in the IVHMS. Moreover, the approach was able to capture the nonlinearity of engine operations under the influence of various anomalies.

“An Empirical Study of the Determinants of Backorder Aging: The Case of the Missing National Item Identification Numbers (NIINs),” by James Rodger, Pankaj, and Micki Hyde, will be published in the June 2009 edition of the Journal of Global Management Research.

The importance of supply chain management (SCM) cannot be overemphasized. SCM is the tracking and coordination of the flow of material, information, and finance in the supplier-customer network. In this paper, we present an empirical study of the determinants of backorder aging for the Battlefield Breakout Backorder Initiative (B3I) that studies the effects of the flow of material, information, and finance through the main supply chain agents: supplier, manufacturer, assembler, distributor, retailer, and customer. Since supply chains are complex systems prone to uncertainty, statistical analysis is a useful tool to capture their dynamics. Using statistical analysis of acquisition history data and case study reports, regression analysis was employed to predict backorder aging using National Item Identification Numbers (NIINs) as unique identifiers. Over 56,000 NIINs were identified and utilized for our analysis. The results of this research lead us to conclude that it is statistically feasible to predict whether an individual NIIN has a propensity to become a backordered item.
