IT Support Center staff have already begun converting courses per faculty requests.
Details on the products included in the Suite can be found online.

This agreement will permit IUP to install these products on all IUP-owned PCs, as well as provide options for IUP employees to license these products for their personally-owned PCs.

Faculty interested in incorporating Web conferencing into their hybrid and online courses will soon have a new option. Beginning Spring 2013, Blackboard Collaborate will be available for use and officially joins IUP’s online learning toolset in Summer 2013.

The Collaborate product will replace Wimba Classroom as IUP’s Web-conferencing product at the end of Spring 2013. Collaborate was chosen following a PASSHE evaluation involving representatives from all 14 PASSHE schools.

Indiana University of Pennsylvania is one of seven universities in Pennsylvania and 118 in the nation recognized by the National Cyber Security Alliance for its work in connection with National Cyber Security Awareness Month.

As part of an online resource kit, the alliance compiled a comprehensive list of higher education institutions that have conducted activities in recognition of the awareness month in October 2012.

The Information Technology Services team at IUP has created resources, including an information protection plan and mobile device security guidelines for students and faculty members. It also created a mini-website devoted to National Cyber Security Awareness Month and released weekly cybersecurity tips through its online news presence.

“What makes this notable is that our materials have bubbled up enough that NCSA could easily find them and therefore include IUP on the list,” Bill Balint, chief information officer at IUP, said.

The National Cyber Security Alliance is a nonprofit organization that works with government, industry, nonprofit, and academic sectors to help people use the Internet safely and securely.

An enhancement has recently been made to the Testscoring service offered by IT Services at the IT Support Center. This enhancement will offer greater security and convenience for those using the Testscoring service, the Student Picture Service, or the Banner Web Print service by storing all output from those services in the same location.

Please note the following important items related to this enhancement:

If you are accessing exam results from an off-campus location using the browser link or a mapped drive, you must connect to the IUP Virtual Private Network (VPN) before you can access your folder. For instructions on connecting to the VPN, see Virtual Private Network (VPN).

If you mapped a drive to
\\exams.iup.edu\examresults$
, you will need to disconnect this drive and remap to
\\dispatch.iup.edu\dispatch$\USERNAME
(replacing your username). Mac users will connect to
smb://dispatch.iup.edu/dispatch$/USERNAME
. See How to Map the Standard IUP Network Drives for instructions on mapping a drive.

The new Web address to access exam results using a web browser will be:

https://dispatch.iup.edu/USERNAME/Exams/

replacing USERNAME with your own username. If you have not used the Testscoring service, this URL will not exist.

Within your /Exams/ folder, the term folders will use standard Banner terms:

201150 = Spring 2012

201210 = Summer 2012

201240 = Fall 2012

If you submitted exams after January 1, 2012, those exams have been copied to the new location and can be found in the appropriate term folder.

For more information regarding the Testscoring service, see Test Scoring Service.

The recent digging project near Stright Hall might have appeared fairly routine, but the results of this effort could make a huge positive impact on the university for a generation or more.

The smattering of backhoes and workers was the first obvious sign of IUP’s position on the “mainline” of the nation’s sixth-largest stimulus project. The $99.6-million federal stimulus grant awarded to the Keystone Initiative for Network Based Education and Research Network (KINBER) in February 2010 is being used to create PennREN—a high-speed computer network for Pennsylvania designed to connect national networks with “last mile” regional and local networks. IUP has been selected as home to an important part of the network.

“IUP is proud to be the site of one of only 13 core nodes positioned along the 1,600 miles of fiber running through parts of 39 counties that comprise the PennREN infrastructure,” said IUP Chief Information Officer Bill Balint. “Not only will this high-speed network connectivity open the door to new levels of learning and research, but it also presents a truly unique collaboration that binds the likes of Carnegie Mellon, Penn State, Pitt, and the University of Pennsylvania to IUP and PASSHE as well as community colleges, small private institutions, and others as full partners.

“Early planning work is already bringing together information technology experts representing all of these segments for the first time. It opens the door to a new era in Pennsylvania with public and private higher education institutions working on a common project, with entities like K-12 education and health care involved as well.”

The PennREN fiber will literally run underneath a portion of the IUP campus, and that installation is currently underway. As a core node, IUP will house sophisticated and advanced technologies critical to the network’s viability and will serve as an “exit ramp” where other entities may eventually connect. IUP is the network’s only core node between State College and Pittsburgh.

“The key for IUP is the potential KINBER opens to our faculty and students via PennREN,” said Balint. “Some nearby states already have networks, and the disadvantage this creates would only grow over time as the volume and time-sensitive nature of data transmitted over the Internet continues its explosive growth. Most every discipline will likely rely on this level of connectivity for both learning and research.”

The completion of PennREN is slated for early 2013.

IT Services is pleased to announce ihelp, a new service for reporting technology support problems or other technology requests to the IT Support Center.

This new service will allow users to enter support requests twenty-four hours a day, seven days a week, while adding efficiency to the IT Support Center allowing calls to be routed to the most appropriate technical staff. In addition, users will be able to view the status of their requests entered into the system at anytime.

Faculty, staff, and students can access ihelp at http://ihelp.iup.edu, using their IUP network username and password to log in. After login, the user must enter a contact phone number, a brief subject, and a description of the problem. The user will also have the ability to attach a file if necessary. After the request is submitted, the user will receive a confirmation e-mail with a reference number of their call.

The IT Support Center would like to encourage all users to take advantage of this new service and only use the x4000 number for emergency support requests (production failures).

For more information, see ihelp Service.

These new layouts provide an alternate method of accessing your IUP e-mail account.

For those who prefer the imail Legacy layout over imail, imail Lite will be your layout of choice. It will also be helpful to those with slower Internet connections.

If you are using a tablet PC or other portable device such as a smartphone, try imail Mobile.

You’ll also be able to set your own default layout by making the selection within imail or imail Lite. By choosing “My Default” from the drop-down menu at imail.iup.edu, you’ll be selecting your default layout. On August 8, 2011, the default selection at imail.iup.edu will be changed to My Default, although you’ll still be able to choose imail, Lite, or Mobile from this menu.

Instructions for choosing your default layout can be found at How to Set Your Default Layout in Imail.

Although PASSHE recently announced that it has signed a five-year agreement with Desire2Learn (D2L) to replace Blackboard and e-College as the lone commercial PASSHE Learning Management System (LMS) provider beginning July 1, 2010, IUP will continue to transition and maintain Moodle as its fully supported LMS.

A Desire2Learn and Moodle FAQ was published to explain the impact of the PASSHE decision on IUP. However, there seems to be some confusion among university constituents.

To attempt to address the possible confusion, below are the facts that were also shared at the February 23, 2010, University Senate meeting by Provost Intemann:

IUP’s Moodle implementation is nearly complete. IUP faculty members have shown outstanding support and cooperation with the move from WebCT. The Spring 2010 semester will represent the final semester for WebCT. The only exception will be Summer pre-session courses that conclude prior to May 31, 2010. WebCT will be generally inaccessible after June 8 and will be completely unavailable on June 29.

IUP will be adding Desire2Learn as a commercial LMS provider at some point in the future. However, Moodle will remain a fully supported open-source LMS at IUP.

IUP must move slowly in exploring Desire2Learn for a number of reasons. IUP support personnel are currently supporting both WebCT and Moodle and have committed to exploring Moodle enhancements during the first few months after WebCT is retired. There are a number of integration and migration issues that will take time after Moodle enhancements are completed that must be resolved before Desire2Learn would work with IUP’s environment at a level similar to WebCT and Moodle.

If a faculty member absolutely believes he or she must use Desire2Learn and cannot use Moodle, IT Support staff will provide very limited support until such time that Desire2Learn has support and integration at a production level.

Beginning March 16, 2010, IUP will implement several changes related to passwords, improving password practices for all IUP computing accounts.

URSA Changes

Upon your first login to URSA on or after March 16, 2010, you will be asked to select two security questions and then provide answers to those questions. This will enhance the security associated with the “Forgot Pin?” option. You will also be required to change your PIN at this time. Your new PIN must be between eight (8) and fifteen (15) characters and may contain both numbers and letters.

Enhanced Password Reset Function in URSA

Students will be able to use a revised URSA option to change—not just reset—both e-mail and network passwords in one simple step.

For more information, see URSA Changes Effective March 16, 2010.
