This workshop will focus on reviewing the findings from two years of quantitative and qualitative cyber bullying research conducted in Pittsburgh and Chicago middle schools. Specifically, data will be shared from the qualitative-based study centered on the definition of cyber bullying. Focus groups were conducted to better understand middle school students’ experiences with bullying and cyber bullying and their perceptions about plausible barriers and solutions. Details related to the participants, methodology, and results of the investigation will be described. Presenters will discuss implications of this study, including best practices for addressing cyber bullying in middle schools, as well next steps for future research. Exploration of the challenges and successes of these research endeavors, as well as recommendations for training school counselors, will also be examined.

Bruno and Kramer will be joining Melissa Ockerman, professor of counseling at DePaul University, for this informative presentation.

On April 2, 2013, over 100 ROX girls will invade the IUP campus to get a firsthand college experience. You may be asking yourself, “What in the world is an ROX girl?”

Ruling Our eXperiences (ROX) is an evidenced-based empowerment program for adolescent girls that is rapidly expanding in Southwestern Pennsylvania. Michelle Bruno, associate professor in the Counseling Department at IUP, was recently awarded a $45,000 grant from the FISA foundation to expand this program locally.

ROX, created in 2006 by Lisa Hinkelman from Ohio State University, is a comprehensive curriculum, based on an intense qualitative and quantitative data collection, designed to address the multiple pressures in a young girl’s life and to equip her with skills to effectively negotiate those challenges and situations. Findings indicate that girls who participate in ROX have statistically significant improvements in self-concept and self-esteem, as well as improved knowledge and skills to handle potentially threatening situations. They also evidence a decrease in girl bullying and relationally aggressive behaviors. Currently, ROX is being implemented by trained facilitators in seven rural schools in Southwestern Pennsylvania.

The IUP campus tour is included in the ROX curriculum to give ROX participants a head start on learning about the wide variety of academic and occupational opportunities available. The fifth through eighth grade girls from Connellsville Area Junior High School, Laurel Valley Elementary School, and RK Mellon Elementary School will enjoy a presentation highlighting the history of IUP, a comprehensive campus tour, and a delicious meal in the IUP dining hall.

Special thanks to the IUP Office of Admissions, especially Shannon Gironda, for all of the hard work and effort that was put forth in planning this special day for the ROX girls!

John Krumboltz, a pioneer and leading figure in career counseling, will offer a one-day workshop entitled “How Career Professionals can Create More Satisfying Lives.” The workshop, sponsored by the IUP Center for Counselor Training and Services (CCTS), will be held on Friday, October 28, 2012, at Kovalchick Convention and Athletic Complex in Indiana, Pa. The event is rescheduled from last April.

Krumboltz is a professor in the School of Education at Stanford University and has taught there since 1961. He became a full professor in 1966.

For more than 50 years, he has been an international scholar and leader in the field. His research in career development, behavioral counseling interventions, and social learning theory in career development represented ground-breaking work. He has authored or coauthored over 200 publications.

The American Counseling Association designated him a “Living Legend in Counseling” in 2004. Two years later, Dr. Krumboltz was given the Outstanding Achievement Award from his alma mater, the University of Minnesota, where he received his Ph.D. degree in Educational Psychology in 1955.

His many other honors include the American Psychological Association (APA) Award for Distinguished Professional Contributions and the Leona Tyler Award from APA’s Division 17 (Counseling Psychology).

Krumboltz will address various topics, including the Happenstance Learning Theory (HLT), in his IUP workshop. His 2009 article on HLT in the Journal of Career Assessment stipulates that career counselors should teach clients about participating in an array of helpful activities to enhance their skills. He further maintained that the goal of career counseling is to aid clients in taking action to accomplish greater satisfaction in their career and personal lives rather than focusing on a sole career decision.

John McCarthy, CCTS director and a professor in Counseling, expressed excitement about Dr. Krumboltz’s visit to IUP. “To have a presenter of his stature conducting a CCTS workshop is a true honor,” McCarthy said. “He is a legendary figure in the profession.”

Workshop information is available on the Center for Counselor Training and Services website or can be obtained by calling 724-357-3807.

Dr. Lorraine J. Guth was recently selected to attend the “Bhutan Institute: Helping to Establish the Profession of Counseling in an Ancient Land” being held in Bhutan in October 2011.

Bhutan is a small, landlocked country in South Asia that has purposely preserved its traditional culture in a fast-paced modern world.

Ten counseling professionals in the United States were selected to be a part of this institute. These professionals are from a variety of institutions, including Indiana University of Pennsylvania, Old Dominion University, Saint Francis College, State University of New York at Plattsburgh, and University of North Carolina–Greensboro.

The group traveling to the institute has been invited by one of the queens of Bhutan, making delegation members official visitors to the country.

Institute participants will spend the first two weeks providing direct counseling services to Bhutanese residents in schools, an inpatient psychiatric unit of a hospital, and a women’s center. During the third week, the selected university professors in the delegation will conduct presentations at the Royal University of Bhutan, and will provide consultation to help establish the counseling profession in this country.

This institute is hosted by the National Board of Certified Counselors (NBCC) and Old Dominion University. NBCC is the leading international organization that provides worldwide counselor certification and advocacy.

Dr. Guth expects to learn a tremendous amount about the culture, practices, religion, and current, limited counseling practices in Bhutan. She will contribute her knowledge and skills to further develop the counseling profession in this country. She also plans to present the information learned from this exciting international outreach effort in her classes.
