<img class="left-aligned-image" title="Paige LaDuca" border="0" alt="Paige LaDuca" align="left" http://www.iup.edu/uploadedImages/About_IUP/News/IUP_News/LaDuca,%20Paige_150.jpg width="150" height="150" />Paige LaDuca presented “Can Green Technology Take the Heat?” at the 2013 Undergraduate Scholars Forum.

Paige is a senior majoring in Environmental Planning in the Geography and Regional Planning Department. In her research, mentored by Professor Calvin Masilela, Paige is exploring whether green technologies such as solar canopies more effectively reduce the urban heat island effect than do cheaper strategies like xeriscaping (native vegetation) and cool roofs. The company Paige interns for recently installed solar canopies, and she says they’ve proved useful for solar energy, reducing the urban heat island effect and sky glow.

“Certain strategies work better for certain areas of development, depending on how much impervious surface is present,” Paige said. “Essentially, the usefulness of each technology depends on how a neighborhood is set up.”

Room to grow: “Not all new technological applications have been studied, and therefore the data isn’t out there. For example, I would’ve liked to also compare the heat radiation of pervious and standard pavement types, but this hasn’t been widely studied.”

How Paige teams up with Masilela: “Professor Masilela has assisted me in multiple research projects, and encourages me to continue my work and continually add to it and revise it. With this research in particular, his advising was helpful in narrowing down my study area.”

Meetings can be directed or rambling, confident or halting, engaging or dull. They can inspire people to work hard or force them to tune out.

Effective meetings can animate a project; ineffective ones can scuttle it. Within any human enterprise, the ability to plan, design, and execute effective meetings is a robust, if narrowly held, skill.

This workshop will provide an overview and demonstration of the knowledge, skills, and practices needed to design, direct, and facilitate effective meetings. The workshop’s goal is to provide participants with the confidence and ability to plan and run meetings that guide people toward the realization of their projects, programs, and plans.

Workshop presentations and demonstrations will introduce important considerations for meeting planning, such as setting and structure, agenda preparation and outreach, and correspondence and meeting communications. Participants will return to their work or classroom with a greater understanding of meeting dynamics and the skills necessary to plan and facilitate productive meetings.

The focus of the course is for students to learn methods for determining the scope of GIS projects, as well as advanced spatial data development techniques.

Class projects for the Spring 2010 semester include:

A system designed to determine the amount of “overburden” or geologic material between previously-mined (underground) coal seams and the surface of the earth (students Bawa Awumbila, Mary Kopistecki, Heather Nunn, and Daniel Sunseri) in cooperation with the Institute for Mine Mapping Archival Procedures and Safety at IUP

Spatial data development in support of the IUP Campus Master Planning initiative (students Paul Bingham, Andrew King, Germaine McArdle, and Shawn Wiley) in conjunction with JJR Consultants of Ann Arbor, Michigan

A geographic analysis of the distribution of “nuisance properties” in Indiana Borough, Pennsylvania (students Zach Afshar, Tetsuya Iwase, Ayanda Masilela, and Mark Turner), in cooperation with Indiana County Office of Planning and Economic Development and Indiana Borough

The Indiana County Regional Trail Connectivity study—a project designed to identify geographic alternatives for the connection of the West Penn and Hoodlebug (recreational) Trails in the vicinity of Blairsville, Pennsylvania (students Thomas Angelo, Devin Creighton, and Tye Desiderio), with partners the Pennsylvania Department of Conservation and Natural Resources and Indiana County Office of Planning and Economic Development

A system to analyze matriculation patterns of freshmen students to IUP and to determine a geographically-based attendance “demand” measure for high school students in Pennsylvania for undergraduate attendance at IUP (students Scott Dunn, Eric Nystrom, Nkemka Uche, and Andrew Young) in cooperation with the IUP Office of Admissions.

Bencloski, professor of Geography and Regional Planning, participated in the Upward Bound Math and Science (UBMS) program on November 21, 2009. He presented a workshop titled “Up Close from Space: Using Satellite Images to Understand Earth’s Surface.”

The purpose of the UBMS program is to show local high school students how math and science are applied in everyday life and in different careers they may not have been exposed to.

Using Landsat digital images of Washington, D.C., and Indiana, Pa., Bencloski first taught students how to create color composites by assigning various Landsat bands to their computers’ red, green, and blue projectors. Students then used the Washington, D.C., image to create a land-use classification of the metro area using the unsupervised classification technique. Students mapped the classes and determined the percentage of the D.C. area comprising each class (e.g., water, parks, urban, etc.).

Using a Landsat image of Rondonia, Brazil, Bencloski taught the participants how to determine the extent and nature of tropical deforestation in that state. This exercise was particularly important to students because it showed them how satellite imagery can assist in solving a major environmental problem, namely the loss of biodiversity through deforestation.

The participants also studied the “urban heat island” effect for Indiana using a thermal image, and they studied the natural and human landscape of the Las Vegas area using radar imagery.

Bencloski said that he was impressed with the enthusiasm and interest displayed by the students, and the apparent ease with which they learned basic image interpretation skills.

Indiana University of Pennsylvania’s Institute for Mine Mapping, Archival Procedures, and Safety received a $172,230 grant from the Pennsylvania State System of Higher Education.

The grant will be used to continue the work of the institute, which archives, digitally records, and geographically references large-format historical coal mine maps. Based on this work, institute personnel will work to initiate new mine safey protocols.

The IUP institute, based in the Geography and Regional Planning Department, is directed by Dr. John Benhart, Geography and Regional Planning professor, and codirected by Phil Zorich, director of IUP Libraries, and Dr. Lon Ferguson, chairman of the safety sciences department.

“These funds will help us to take the institute to the next level,” Benhart said. “Our ultimate goal is to create an on-line, searchable database of all of our digital mine maps that will help to improve the safety of future coal mining in Pennsylvania by providing needed information about abandoned or unknown mines.”

Funding will be used for additional personnel, including graduate and undergraduate students, to continue scanning existing maps and developing databases.

In 1998, IUP received the records of the Rochester and Pittsburgh Coal Co. from Consol Energy. The donation included not only artifacts and files, but also the mine maps depicting the location of mines and coal seams throughout the region and financial support to help organize the collection. R&P Coal Co., in operation from 1891 to 1997, was purchased by Consol in 1998.

In 2005, IUP received a $125,000 Cruse digital camera from the Pennsylvania Bureau of Deep Mine Safety to digitize large-format mine maps in the R&P collection as well as other large-format maps from across Pennsylvania.

At that time, IUP received a gift of $36,777 from Rosebud Mining Co. of Kittanning and a grant of $15,000 from the Pennsylvania Historical and Museum Commission to help organize and process the R&P collection at IUP.

In total, IUP has approximately three hundred hard copy, large-format mine maps and around five hundred digital mine maps in its collection and database, reflecting more than a century of Pennsylvania coal mining history.

In addition to supporting mine safety, community planning, emergency responders, and mine subsidence initiatives in the future, the institute is providing training and experience in the high-growth, high-demand geospatial field for Geography and Regional Planning students, Benhart said.

“This project embodies what we should be doing at a public institution of higher learning: contributing to communities and regions while providing our students with opportunities to learn how concepts, science, and technology really work.”

Officials are planning for Fall 2009 an exhibit at the University Museum titled “Pennsylvania Coal Culture, Featuring the R&P Coal Collection.”

More information about the institute is available at the Institute for Mine Mapping, Archival Procedures, and Safety.

Welcome to Pittsburgh...

2008 Pennsylvania Chapter of the American Planning Association Annual Conference

On behalf of the 2008 Conference Committee of the Pennsylvania Chapter of the American Planning Association, we welcome you to the City of Pittsburgh.

Celebrating the 250th anniversary of its founding and continuing to reinvent itself, Pittsburgh exemplifies the logo of our conference: Cities of the past: America’s places of the future. The theme and location for the 2008 conference is especially fitting this year and should serve as a reminder that planners across the Commonwealth work to preserve our heritage while preparing communities to move into the future.

The City of Pittsburgh and her surrounding communities are experiencing yet another transformation that perpetuates a pattern of social and economic renewals. Ours is a region that has been reborn many times, beginning first as a strategic military location during the Revolutionary War, serving as the gateway for westward expansion and a center for commerce during the development of our nation, and eventually becoming known as the Steel Town that built America in the twentieth century. Today, our cultural and economic renaissance is centered on the arts and technology, propelled by worldclass educational institutions that employ more than 117,000 people in thirteen counties.

Pittsburgh leads the nation in automation technology for government and businesses. We invite you to experience the richness of our history, enjoy our vibrant social life, and encourage you to immerse yourself in the conference itself, which offers a myriad of workshops and events to increase your knowledge and awareness of sound land use practices and policies.

Sincerely,

Cochairs of the 2008 Conference Committee:

A spatial statistician and alumnus received an honorary Doctoral of Science degree at May commencement ceremonies, while an education major served as student speaker.

Daniel Griffith, who earned his bachelor’s degree in Mathematics Education in 1970 and his master’s degree in Geography in 1972 from IUP, is an Ashbel Smith Professor at the University of Texas at Dallas. He earned a second master’s from Penn State University and his doctoral degree from the University of Toronto. IUP presented him with a Distinguished Alumni Award in 1982.

Recently, Griffith was an invited visiting researcher at the Max Planck Institute for Demographic Research in Rostock, Germany, and was awarded a Fulbright Senior Specialist grant by the Council for International Exchange of Scholars to convene a series of workshops and seminars about spatial statistics and geographic information systems at the invitation of the University of Alberta. Previously a member of the faculty at Syracuse University, Griffith was awarded a Leverhulme Visiting Professorship to the University of Cambridge. While at Syracuse, he specialized in quantitative, urban, and economic geography.

As described in a 1999 issue of IUP Magazine, which featured a story about Griffith, spatial statistics, his specialty, can be thought of as number crunching or processing mounds of data concerning designated geographic situations or conditions. The processing results yield the problems’ solution or at least a pathway to the solution. He was named a Guggenheim Fellow in 2001 and was first listed in Who’s Who in the World in 2002.

Rachel Sams will serve as the student speaker. She will receive her B.S.Ed. in Elementary Education.
