Proposal submissions are due March 1, 2011, for IUP’s second annual Gender and Sexuality Symposium.

The symposium will take place in the HUB on Wednesday, April 13, 2011.

We are excited to invite you to join a multidisciplinary dialogue on gender and sexuality. Although formal research projects and papers are welcome, the symposium is designed to encourage meaningful dialogue amongst the community; thus, we encourage you to submit current projects and papers that will add to the conversation.

Various critical approaches—scientific, mathematic, literary, historical, political, rhetorical, ethical, philosophical, artistic, etc.—can be utilized to examine gender and sexuality. By creating an environment where professionals and students from the various disciplines can dialogue, we learn from each other, increasing our knowledge and competencies. The Symposium on Gender and Sexuality is a great place to start, where students, staff, and faculty are coming together to present their research and experience on the intersections of these topics.

The course will meet Mondays, Wednesdays, and Fridays from 1:25 to 2:15 p.m.

Description of Course:

Dr. Lingyan Yang
Associate professor of English and affiliated faculty member in Women’s Studies, IUP

This upper-level Women’s Studies seminar examines the diverse, dynamic, complex, global, and multicultural intellectual tradition of the twentieth-century feminist theories in the world. We will interpret some of the best and the most celebrated women intellectuals’ vigorous conceptual intersections between feminist theories and numerous schools of thoughts, such as Marxism, poststructuralism and French thought, postmodernism, queer theory, postcolonial theory, Asian American cultural criticism, and African American cultural criticism. We pay much attention to women’s mediation between the private and the public, women’s individual selves and professionalism, female sexuality, women’s resistance against patriarchy and struggle with poverty, women’s independence and empowerment, women’s language, literature, and epistemology, feminist agency and activism, and women’s complex relationship with history, culture, community, and the world. Situated in the specific historical, social, sexual, and cultural contexts, our discussions will be enriched and complicated by the critical categories of gender, class, sexuality, ethnicity, race, decolonization, and history. The course seeks to engage, stimulate, and empower.

Requirements include active participations, a few one-page informal critical responses, one oral presentation, a midterm paper (five to six pages), and a final research paper (six to eight pages). This is a recommended course for all Women’s Studies minors. All who are interested are very welcome. Enjoy.

Tentative Reading List:
1. Virginia Woolf, A Room of One’s Own (1929)
2. Kate Chopin, The Awakening (1899)
3. Karl Marx and F. Engels, The German Ideology, up to p.65.
4. Tsitsi Dangarembga, Nervous Conditions (1988)
5. Sandra Cisneros, The House on Mango Street (1984)
6. Zora Neale Hurston, Their Eyes Were Watching God (1937)

There will also be a few women-centered films, such as Rosie the Riveter, the women’s documentary classic, A League of Their Own, Silence of the Lambs, and Mulan, and a course pack with some clear and wonderful feminist theoretical articles, selected women’s poetry, and short stories. If you have questions, please e-mail Dr. Lingyan Yang at lingyan@iup.edu.

A Qualtrics survey is being sent out to faculty and students for IUP’s second annual Gender and Sexuality Symposium keynote.

Learn about the fascinating speakers who want to be a part of this year’s conference, which takes place on Wednesday, April 13, 2011, in the HUB.

Andrea Gibson, performance poet/activist, has performed at the most prestigious universities across the country with powerful readings on politics, global justice, and gender issues. Her fourth full-length album, Yellowbird, contains a combination of her poetry with piano, global drums, dobro, and violin, as well as music from songwriters Kim Taylor and Christ Pureka and music inspired by Devotchka. Gibson has won numerous awards and competitions, including the 2008 Women’s World Poetry Slam, and has been featured on several programs, including NPR and the BBC.

Betsy Crane, Ph.D., author, educator, and researcher, is the director of Widener University’s graduate programs in Human Sexuality. She has an extensive background in human services, ranging from academic publications to serving as the CEO of a human services agency. Dr. Crane has published on topics including social work practice with families, queer studies, and human sexuality. She has presented at numerous national conferences and conducted trainings on human sexuality across the country, as well as written curriculum on human sexuality for numerous audiences. Currently, Dr. Crane is co-authoring a book entitled Sexuality Though a Social Lens.

Leonore Tiefer, Ph.D., is an author, educator, researcher, therapist, and activist in the areas of sexuality. She has written widely about the medicalization of men’s and women’s sexuality, including pioneering the anti-medicalization campaign New View. Dr. Tiefer has received numerous awards, appeared on news shows such as Nightline and the Today Show, and has published hundreds of scientific works. She has spoken as a keynote speaker for many organizations, using both humor and scientific knowledge to educate and raise awareness about issues related to sexuality.

Matthew Burstein, Ph.D., in an educator and researcher. His interests focus on the intersection between philosophy of mind and social/political thought—with a particular focus on how integrated systems of norms (call them "institutions") create embodied persons. Though a philosopher by training, Matthew’s philosophical reflections remain grounded in the actual problems faced by those suffering under the burdens of systematically oppressive institutions. In his current job, he is developing experimental undergraduate curricula and new media strategies for Georgetown University’s Kennedy Institute of Ethics.

Robyn Ochs, speaker, teacher, and writer, is an award-winning activist and the editor of the Bisexual Resource Guide and Getting Bi: Voices of Bisexuals Around the World (second edition), the new anthology of 220 essays from forty-two countries around the world that explore bisexual identity. In addition to this work, her writings have been published in numerous bisexual, women’s studies, multicultural, and GLBT anthologies. Robyn has taught courses on GLBT history and politics in the United States, the politics of sexual orientation, and the experiences of those who transgress the binary categories of gay/straight, masculine/feminine, black/white, and/or male/female.

On April 9, 2010, the IUP Women’s Studies program and President’s GLBT Commission present a Symposium on Gender and Sexuality at the HUB on the IUP main campus from 8:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m.

Are you interested in learning with what critical approaches—scientific, mathematic, literary, historical, political, rhetorical, ethical, philosophical, artistic, etc.—we can examine gender and sexuality in order to learn from them and from each other? Then this symposium is a great place to start, where students, staff, and faculty are coming together to present their research and experience on these topics.

The morning session will begin at 8:00 a.m. with registration, opening remarks, and a panel of distinguished speakers. The day’s activities include four one-hour workshops, eight thirty-minute panels, and six additional panels of paper presentations. Whatever style you prefer to engage these topics, there is something for everyone, including performing arts and poster sessions from noon to 2:00 p.m.

A $5 donation to support a second conference on gender and sexuality is suggested in place of a registration fee. Over $300 in prizes will be raffled for those who give a donation.

Keynote Speaker: Beverly Greene, Ph.D., will present a lecture on “Intersectionalities—Dividing and Conquering Between Socially Marginalized Groups: What the Same Sex Marriage Debate Hath Wrought”

Dr. Greene was awarded a Ph.D. in Clinical Psychology from the Derner Institute of Adelphi University and was a doctoral fellow in Mental Retardation at the Mental Retardation Institute of New York Medical College in Valhalla, New York. She has served on the editorial boards of numerous scholarly journals and is the author of nearly one hundred publications in the psychological literature. Nine of those publications have received national awards as significant contributions to the psychological literature on women, women of color, sexual minorities, African-American women, and families.

She is the founding coeditor of the APA Div. 44 book series Psychological Perspectives on Lesbian, Gay, and Bisexual Issues. She is also the recipient of numerous national awards that include the 1996 Outstanding Leadership Award from the APA Committee on Lesbian, Gay, and Bisexual Concerns and the 2000 APA Society for the Psychology of Women Heritage Award.

Cosponsored by the President’s GLBT Commission, Women’s Studies, the President’s Commission on the Status of Women, the Psychology Department, the Sociology Department, graduate programs in Composition in TESOL, and graduate programs in Literature and Criticism.

Climate Change: Can Imagination Save Us?

Artist Ann Rosenthal will lecture on campus Thursday, February 7 at 5:00 p.m. in 225 Sprowls Hall. It is free and open to the public.

Ann Rosenthal brings to communities thirty years experience as an artist, educator, and writer. Her art installations address the local manifestation of global concerns, including climate change, food safety, and nuclear waste. Most recently, her work has been shown at the Andy Warhol Museum, Exit Art, the Hudson River Museum, several northeast universities, and in Japan. She partners with trail organizations and post-industrial communities to reconnect citizens, educational institutions, and youth to their forgotten waterways as sites of common experience, history and possibility. Her essays on eco/community art and interdisciplinary pedagogy have been published in several journals and anthologies.

Ms. Rosenthal's lecture is co-sponsored by the College of Fine Arts, College of Humanities and Social Sciences, and the IUP Women's Studies Program.

Special note: Her lecture will be followed by the opening reception (6:00-8:00) of the exhibition "Four Degrees: Artistic Views on Climate Change," in Kipp Gallery (first floor of Sprowls Hall).
