The third annual 5K was held on Saturday, April 27, 2013, with great weather and a large turnout. The race drew over 60 runners and walkers from all over the Indiana area.

The competitors prepared themselves before they took on the 3.1-mile challenge that included a few hills and a nice short run on the Hoodlebug Trail. Each participant received a t-shirt, designed by Andrea Miller, as well as a number to identify them as they crossed the finish line. The proceeds of the race will go to the American Heart Association to help with further research on heart disease.

The first two runners to cross the finish line were neck-and-neck the entire race. Debbie Conner crossed first with a time of 21.26.22, and Gerry Perez was right behind her at 21.26.90. There were three winners in each age bracket, with competitors ranging from age 12 to 65.

At the conclusion of the race, the medals were distributed to all the winners and the raffle winners were announced. Our sponsors, the Co-op Store and the Coney, both donated gift cards, and the James G. Mill Center for Health and Fitness donated some t-shirts as well as a three-month membership. The staff would like to thank all the volunteers as well as the participants because they all helped make this event a success!

Bib Number, Name, and Time
100, Debbie Conner, 21.26.22
103, Gerry Perez, 21.26.90
113, Dan Faucette, 22.38.28
120, Myles Burden, 22.40.72
119, Zachary Reedy, 24.16.93
107, Amber Brosius, 24.47.00
91, Tawnee Bowers, 25.13.65
104, Charles Sturges, 25.23.37
126, Brian Foster-Pegg, 25.28.34
92, Sally Peace, 26.02.15
105, Nathan Rosenberg, 26.33.34
111, Alfred Reedy, 27.01.84
87, Mandy Stinchcomb, 27.06.25
114, Ann Marie Schweitzer,27.55.03
84, Kriten Forrester, 28.32.18
121, Broc Hepler, 28.51.15
130, Jen Sleppy, 29.02.03
97, Dennis Giever, 29.02.84
89, Steve Engler, 29.13.84
115, Melissa Waugaman, 29.29.50
112, Rebecca Alman, 29.42.47
110, Tyler Zolocsik, 29.42.90
106, Marisa Baum, 29.51.78
133, Pao Ying Hsiao, 29.55.35
118, James Nelson, 30.07.18
137, Jason Killam, 30.18.56
88, Michael Tuite, 30.20.25
124, Cory Ireland, 31.30.56
125, Kristina Stiger, 31.41.13
98, Janet Walker, 32.03.15
138, Tom Kauffman, 32.32.63
109, Teslla Koebler, 33.27.15
131, Erica Snyder, 33.42.78
96, Linda Cribbs, 34.14.12
90, Brittany Warren, 34.49.25
95, Chelsie Brown, 36.39.22
132, Danielle Nedzesky, 36.39.26
134, Steven Cable, 37.53.93
135, Marissa Allmendinger, 37.55.51
127, Kacy Lewis, 38.16.25
108, Keenan Adams, 38.19.15
94, Cody Toy, 38.35.12
81, Nancy McBreen, 38.47.40
82, Sherry Sheehan, 39.04.97
93, Julie Rado, 39.48.97
85, Emily Munzert, 40.28.91
86, Gail Munzert, 41.11.03
102, Sharon Manecke, 42.53.62
101, Windy Bartlebaugh, 44.28.90
99, Cindy Varner, 49.52.15
116, Fanyi Qiu, 49.53.87
117, Stephen Ditch, 50.14.75
139, Lisa Baker, 50.28.18
83, Pat Pileski, 52.27.18
122, Ashley Whiteford, 52.28.28
123, Cherie Chambliss, 52.52.59
129, Diane Engler, 52.53.47
128, John Engler, 52.53.49

The YWCA is one of the oldest and largest women's organizations in the nation, serving over 2 million women, girls, and their families. The YWCA is dedicated to eliminating racism, empowering women, and promoting peace, justice, freedom, and dignity for all.

Black has twice received the Faculty ROSE Award (for recognition of superior effort), and also has been honored by former IUP president Lawrence Pettit as “one of the outstanding instructors whose extra effort and concern for students has made a difference.” This provides testimony for the fact that she positively impacts the lives of her students.

Walking is great exercise, and studies have shown that it reduces the chances of developing diabetes and heart disease. Experts say all you need is 30 minutes of moderate-level physical activity a day to increase health, and brisk walking is a type of physical activity. People who do not participate in physical activity are more likely to develop diseases such as osteoporosis and arthritis, and are found to not live as long as people who do engage in physical activity.

The winners of the Fall 10,000 Step Challenge said they enjoyed the challenge and they noticed improvements in their health. Laura Wilson, the female winner, said she lost seven pounds during the challenge, and it has motivated her to work out more frequently. Joe Sgriccia, the male winner, said he did the challenge to get back in shape, and he even lost some weight throughout the challenge.

On the beautiful morning of May 5, 2012, 80 participants geared up to run the James G. Mill Fitness Center’s second annual 5K Run/Walk.

The event kicked off with some music and a few motivational words to encourage the runners before the big race took place. Many of the runners and walkers began their preparation for the 3.1-mile race with a few stretches and some exercises to warm their bodies up, as well as some refreshments provided by the gym.

The course began near the softball and baseball fields on IUP’s South Campus and continued down a hill, where the racers made a loop. As they traveled back up the hill, the road led onto a bike path. This path met up with the Hoodlebug Trail and made one more turn around to come back to the beginning of the course.

Each runner displayed on their identification bib a pink ribbon to honor those currently fighting and those who have passed away from breast cancer. The proceeds from the race were donated to the Breast Cancer Research Foundation. Breast cancer is the third leading cause of death in women in the United States today, and many of those involved with both the organization and those running in the race know someone who is currently suffering or has suffered from this disease. For those who are personally affected by this disease, each step closer to the finish line was one step closer to finding a cure.

The first to cross the finish line was Sam Schilling with a time of 19:57. The top three winners from each age category were named and received a medal. While many of the participants ran the race, there were quite a few who walked and made some very impressive times as well!

<img title="5K Run/Walk Award Ceremony" border="0" alt="5K Run/Walk Award Ceremony" https://www.iup.edu:443/uploadedImages/Units/H/Health_and_Physical_Education/Events/5K_Run_Walk/IMG_3755%20----%202.jpg width="400" height="267" />
This is a culminating event for the fitness center each year, and we hope that the participation continues to grow. With the competition from another 5K in the area, the Pittsburgh Marathon, and the Boston Marathon being held that same weekend, the turnout was very impressive.

We look forward to seeing what next year holds and to find out what important cause all of the racers will be running for! Our facility would like to give a special thanks to all those who helped and participated in this beneficial and fun event.

See you next year!

Louis Pesci has been at the Highway Safety Center since 1997 and became director in 2010.

The funding award will be allocated for instructor salaries and buying and maintenance of the police vehicles used at the Harwood driving school, near Hazelton.

“The school trains about 300 employees each year,” Pesci said.

The advanced-driver training at Harwood offers a two-day program (16 hours) consisting of classroom time and driving time. The program will run May–June and resume again September–October, he said.

Pesci noted that PPL approached the center to evaluate its drivers in 1996 in an effort to reduce collision rates from its employees. PPL built its own training facility, and in 1997 IUP started operating it, offering a perceptual driving program. PPL and the center entered into a contract in 2000 for the Harwood driving school.

Pesci teaches safety/driver education (Health and Physical education Department) at IUP, which certifies students to teach driver's education. It is a 12-credit certification program with four parts: classroom, behind the wheel, multiple-car driving range, and stimulation. Novice drivers can earn their license in the spring and summer sessions for free. Those in the comprehensive driver education program teach the novice students.

IUP has the only comprehensive driver education program in Pennsylvania. The Highway Safety Center has offered proficiency driving programs since 1985.

Looking for New Year’s Resolution Inspiration? Meet Nick and Sherri Yachup

Many of us make New Year’s resolutions focused on health and fitness, but after a few weeks, we run out of gas. For some timely inspiration, we at the James G. Mill Center for Health and Fitness would like to share the success story of Nick and Sherri Yachup, two fitness center members who decided to put health and fitness first—and stuck with it.

Nick works as a counselor, and Sherri works at the Bursar’s Office at IUP. They joined the fitness center in February 2011. Like most of us, they’d made a New Year’s resolution to get in shape and start feeling better about themselves.

<img class="left-aligned-image" title="Sherri and Nick Yachup Before" border="0" alt="Sherri and Nick Yachup Before" align="left" https://www.iup.edu:443/uploadedImages/Units/H/Health_and_Physical_Education/Centers/James_G_Mill_Fitness_Center/Sherri%20and%20Nick%20before.jpg width="162" height="141" />
They try to come to the fitness center at least four times a week. Their regimen consists of elliptical, treadmill, weight training, and, when weather permits, walking the track.

Left and below: Before and after

Since joining the fitness center, Sherri has lost over 50 pounds! Nick has lost another 10 pounds in addition to the 100 pounds he’d lost the previous year. The benefits have been many. Sherri says she’s noticed a significant improvement in her strength and endurance even in performing small, daily tasks around the house, and both she and Nick have experienced a reduction of stress. Sherri has noticed that a good workout lowers her stress level after a tough day at work, and Nick has noticed that some medical issues he’d experienced over the past years have diminished as well.

<img class="left-aligned-image" title="Sherri and Nick Yachup After" border="0" alt="Sherri and Nick Yachup After" align="left" https://www.iup.edu:443/uploadedImages/Units/H/Health_and_Physical_Education/Centers/James_G_Mill_Fitness_Center/Sherri%20and%20Nick%20after.jpg width="125" height="150" />
By starting to work out and put their health first, Nick and Sherri have already added many years back onto their lives.

Nick and Sherri’s main motivation to push through and come to the fitness center every week is to never regain the weight they’ve lost. In addition, they enjoy the nice staff, good music, and great prices. Most important, they feel like they truly fit in at James G. Mill Fitness Center.

Sherri’s personal fitness goal is to lose another 40 to 50 pounds. Nick’s goal was to lower his weight to 300 pounds. Having reached this goal, Nick has set another: getting down to the weight he was in high school. He has only another 20 pounds to go!

What advice can Nick and Sherri give to people who want to raise their health and fitness levels?

“Don’t wait!” they say. “If you don’t feel good about yourself, don’t wait to try to fix it.”

Sherri adds that she now knows you can’t control your health just by dieting alone. They make working out a regular part of their healthy lifestyle.

We congratulate Nick and Sherri on their amazing accomplishments and wish them good luck with their future fitness goals!

Tammy Somogyi and Richard Baginski are the female and male winners of the 2011 Biggest Loser Challenge!

Eight grueling weeks has come and gone and eighteen members competed for the title of the Biggest Loser. Many worked hard on their workout and nutritional goals, but only one male and one female came out on top (Top right picture: Tammy Somogyi. Bottom right picture: Richard Baginski).

Both Tammy and Richard received a fitness basket from the staff at James G. Mill Center for Health and Fitness. The basket consisted of a free one year membership to our facility, a co-op gift card, a 9th Street Deli gift card, health food items, two promotional items from our facility, and a Jim’s Gym t-shirt. On behalf of all of the staff members, we would like to wish Tammy and Richard congratulations on all of their hard work, dedication, and commitment over the past eight weeks!

<img style="width: 169px; height: 261px; " class="right-aligned-image design_selected_field" title="Biggest Loser Tammy Somogyi" alt="Biggest Loser Tammy Somogyi" align="right" https://www.iup.edu:443/uploadedImages/Units/H/Health_and_Physical_Education/Centers/James_G_Mill_Fitness_Center/TammyS.JPG />
Tammy Somogyi works at the Health Service Department on the IUP campus. She is our female contestant Biggest Loser Winner. She lost a total of 2.48 pounds and 4.2% body fat. Tammy was very surprised to find out that she was the winner of this challenge. She stated, “If there is any competition that you would want to win, this one would be it!” After maintaining a desk job at IUP, Tammy really wanted to get back into shape and start exercising again which is why she signed up for the competition. Her motivation throughout the program was when she started to notice her clothes fitting differently. Her workout program consisted of 20 minutes of cardio, 20 minutes of strength training, and 20 minutes of stretching. Tammy said that the fitness center and its staff members were very helpful to the success of her program.

<img style="width: 167px; height: 281px; " class="right-aligned-image design_selected_field" title="Biggest Loser Richard Baginski" alt="Biggest Loser Richard Baginski" align="right" https://www.iup.edu:443/uploadedImages/Units/H/Health_and_Physical_Education/Centers/James_G_Mill_Fitness_Center/RichardBaginski.jpg />
Richard is our male contestant Biggest Loser Winner. He lost a total of 3.65 pounds. When asked how he felt to be the winner of this year’s challenged he stated that this was his first experience competing in anything like this so it felt great to win on the first try. He wanted this competition to be a learning experience, and was greatly encouraged by the James G. Mill staff to sign up for the event. He had two goals for himself; first was to lose weight and second was to reduce stress. Throughout the competition he relied heavily on his inner drive and determination to motivate him to stay focused throughout the eight week process. His workout routine included walking three miles a day, later increasing this to six miles a day with an occasional incline, followed by a set program of ten different resistance machines that he performed four to five times a week. He had been using this program for a while, but used the advice of the staff members to tweak the program a little bit to focus around his goals. Richard stated that the environment of the facility along with the staff was very inviting and always brightened his day! The advice that Richard would give to those that are looking to lose weight or stay in shape is, “Set realistic goals and stick to that plan. Accomplishing those goals will build your confidence and motivate you to challenge yourself with tougher goals. Self-discipline is the key!”

Again, we want to congratulate both Tammy and Richard for their accomplishments. Getting in shape is not always the easiest thing to do, but your drive and determination has greatly influenced and motivated us all to achieve our fitness goals! Thank you!

Eight tedious weeks have gone by, and we’ve had many people walk through the doors of the James G. Mill Fitness Center in pursuit of their workout goals and wanting to say they are this semester’s Biggest Loser, but only two people end up with that privilege.

Linda and John battled it out against twenty-nine other contestants and came out on top. Pauline Geesey was right on the heels of Linda. Another contestant, Dave Lashinsky, lost over seventeen pounds in the eight-week program as well. (From left: Facility Manager Shaina Smith, female winner Linda Flack, male winner John Lewis, Adult Fitness Prgram Supervisor Greg Gillespie)

Both Linda and John received a fitness gift basket, which including a free one-year membership to the fitness center, a Co-op gift certificate, a Sheetz gift card, a pedometer, and some other fitness goodies. Congratulations to Linda and John for your hard work and commitment over the past eight weeks. You are our Biggest Loser winners!

Linda Flack is a faculty member in the PA/OSHA Consultation Program in the Safety Sciences Department and the ladies’ winner of the Biggest Loser. She lost a total of 3.4 pounds and 4.6 percent points of her body fat, for an 11 percent overall change. When asked about how it feels to be the winner of the Biggest Loser competition, she said it feels good to be able to prove that she can lose fat and gain muscle. Her daily workout routines were comprised of working out at least three times a week for about an hour—walking and running on the treadmill as well as resistance training. Her goal was to lose weight and gain muscle. She did not find it difficult to stay motivated during the contest because she had someone to work out with everyday. She said it is much easier having someone there with you and to be able to push one another on days you may feel not as motivated. The most enjoyable part of the contest was being educated on exercise in general. Being able to learn exercises that she can do at home was a great benefit to her. She praised the help of the fitness center staff, including the nutritionist assigned to her. Her advice to individuals trying to lose weight and get in shape is to simply just do it. Even on the days you do not want to, find the motivation within yourself to stay on track.

John Lewis is a faculty member in the Criminology Department and our men’s winner of the Biggest Loser. John lost 10.9 pounds and 4 percent of his body fat. This equals an 11.2 percent overall change. When asked how he feels about winning the contest, he responded by saying that winning was not his goal: completing the competition was his goal, and that part was an enjoyable experience. His workout routines included workouts at least five times a week from 5:30 to 7:00 every morning. He also paid close attention to what he was eating with the help of a nutritionist on campus. He found it somewhat difficult to stay motivated during the contest—not so much with the fitness end of things, but with the diet part in staying disciplined. John did not have a specific goal in mind when he joined, but mainly entered for the idea of competition. The most enjoyable part of the contest for him was finding out his actual body fat percentages and what he should be weighing. He stated that the fitness center staff was extremely helpful, as was the nutritionist. His advice to people trying to lose weight and stay in shape is to incorporate both diet and exercise. Do not rationalize skipping workouts or cheating on your diet, because it is very easy to cheat yourself in this respect.

As a tribute to our dedicated members, the James G. Mill Fitness Center in is taking time to recognize some of our valued members.

These members have not only been an inspiration to us, but are an influential part of the community for the passion they portray in their commitment to physical health and wellness.

Carol Connell is a library faculty member at IUP. She is sixty-eight years old and has been a devoted member to the fitness center for a little over a year. She came to us after an unfortunate incident in where she had broken her upper arm. Dr. Richard Hsiao, director of the fitness center, suggested she utilize the fitness center to aid in her rehabilitation process while getting a little extra exercise. She has been coming regularly ever since, at least four to five days every week. Since beginning her membership at the fitness center about a year ago, Carol has lost nearly forty pounds! Her personal fitness goals are to continue to lose weight, to feel better, and to maintain her active lifestyle. The benefits she has experienced are feeling better, an increase in her self-esteem, and an enhanced appearance. When asked about how she finds the motivation to attend the fitness center on such a regular basis, Carol explained that it has just become part of her routine, and she is determined to keep losing more weight. Her experience with the James Mill Fitness Center has been a positive one. She has met a lot of new people, and she is continually impressed with the knowledge and helpfulness of the staff.

<img class="right-aligned-image" title="Jessica Crawford" height="324" alt="Jessica Crawford" https://www.iup.edu:443/uploadedImages/jesscrawford2.jpg width="200" align="right" border="0" />Jessica Crawford has been a member of the fitness center since July 2009. Her initial reason for beginning her membership with us was because of the atmosphere our facility possesses. The laid-back, personable atmosphere really appealed to her, as well as the lower number of student members as opposed to places like the HUB. She regularly attends the fitness center four days a week. Her personal fitness goals include increasing her running endurance and maintaining her current weight. The benefits she has experienced from attending the fitness center includes her body weight being maintained, and her overall health and endurance have increased as a result of her efforts. When asked about how she finds the motivation to attend the fitness center on such a regular basis, Jessica explained that it has become part of her daily routine that she takes time to plan around. She finds herself in a poor mood if she can’t find the time to work out. Her experience with the James Mill Fitness Center has been enjoyable. She has met some very nice people, and finds the relaxing atmosphere at the center very enjoyable.

<img class="left-aligned-image" title="Al Novels" height="267" alt="Al Novels" https://www.iup.edu:443/uploadedImages/alnovels2.jpg width="200" align="left" border="0" />Al Novels is the retired associate dean of the College of Humanities and Social Sciences. He has been a dedicated member of the fitness center for over ten years! The initial reason he started coming to the fitness center was that he wanted to enhance his physical activity and find a release from the day-to-day office job that kept him at his desk for the majority of his day. He currently attends the fitness center between three and four days a week. His personal fitness goals are mainly to stay fit and to maintain his current weight. In doing this, it will also let him engage and indulge in some foods he otherwise would feel guilty about eating if he was not regularly working out. Al has lost about fifty pounds since beginning his membership at the gym. The benefits he has seen from attending the fitness center include the close relationships he’s fostered with friends and colleagues and maintaining his overall fitness. When asked about how he finds the motivation to attend the fitness center on such a regular basis, Al explained that if he does not work out he feels guilty and sluggish. Exercising helps him feel better and sleep better. His experience at the James Mill Fitness Center has been a very positive experience. He explained the fitness center as a “well-kept secret” because of the laid-back atmosphere, the professionalism and quality of the staff, and the unbeatable prices. He stated that the establishment of this fitness center is one of the best things that has happened to him at IUP, giving him the opportunity improve his overall health and wellness.

Our current members say...

A few of the Zink fitness members were kind enough to speak out about the fitness center and its services. Provided below are testimonials from a few of the members at the facility.

Marlene Joyce joined the fitness center in 2009 and shares that it was the “availability of the equipment and the convenience of the center” that hooked her on joining. In addition, free locker and towel service is offered with the purchase of a membership. Lora Herrick says, “this is the best deal going, you cannot beat the convenience on campus.” Linda Butler also agrees that “the convenience and attentiveness of the facility is unbeatable!”

<img class="right-aligned-image" title="Al Novels" height="150" alt="Al Novels" https://www.iup.edu:443/uploadedImages/Units/H/Health_and_Physical_Education/DSC01119.JPG width="200" align="right" border="0" />
Aside from being a wonderful workout facility, we also offer a terrific social environment. Many university employees take a break from their busy day to visit the center and work out. Two of the fitness center's most familiar faces, Dr. Al Novels, associate dean of Humanities and Social Sciences, and Dr. George Bieger from the Department of Professional Studies in Education work out many afternoons during the week. Each day, they help boost morale in the fitness center during their workouts, and the staff greatly appreciates their continuous dedication and great attitudes. Novels and Royden Grove both agree that the fitness center is the best kept secret and that it it also houses a great staff.

“The Zink fitness facility is a great place to work out. It has a great atmosphere with nice people,” explains Thomas Rivosecchi, a community member. At the James G. Mill Center for Health and Fitness, we truly appreciate our members, past, current, and future, which is why we encourage you to join. We provide a laid-back atmosphere and promise to keep the intimidation factor low. We will treat you with respect and help set you up with a workout program that matches your fitness/ability level and goals. Come check us out and see for yourself!

<img class="left-aligned-image" title="Sean McDaniel" height="150" alt="Sean McDaniel" https://www.iup.edu:443/uploadedImages/Units/H/Health_and_Physical_Education/DSC01117.JPG width="200" align="left" border="0" />
As a new member to the fitness facility at the end of the Fall 2009 semester, Spanish professor Dr. Sean McDaniel says that the friendly, helpful staff and the personal interaction hooked him. The atmosphere created at the fitness center extends beyond friendliness; it is a motivating environment to be a part of in addition to the convenient hours that cannot be beat. Dr. McDaniel also enjoys the fact that he never has to wait for equipment, and he is pleased with his individualized exercise program.

On behalf of Director Dr. Richard Hsiao, GA's Hayley MacDonald and Kayla Rorabaugh and the rest of the staff at the James G. Mill Center for Health and Fitness, we would like to invite you to become a member of our fitness family. We would also like thank all of our members for their continued loyalty and dedication. We appreciate and are honored to help provide this service to you, and we hope to continue to do so for many years to come. Without your kindness and support, this truly would not be possible. The department was represented by both an undergraduate Sports Administration team and a graduate Sports Management team.

The three-day sports conference and research case study competition was held at the William C. Friday Center for Continuing Education on the campus of the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, hosted by the College Sport Research Institute and the Exercise and Sport Science Department.

<img title="UNC Case Study Team" height="259" alt="UNC Case Study Team" https://www.iup.edu:443/uploadedImages/UNC_Team(3).jpg width="400" border="0" />
Advised by Dr. Richard Hsiao, the IUP undergraduate team was made up of Sports Administration students Jake Dulick, Jeanna Kamphaus, Dan Killinger, and Sam Tullius. The undergrads competed against a large field of teams from across the country. This is their second year representing the department following a third-place finish in 2009. The undergraduates took their experience and expertise into the competition and, again, represented IUP extremely well.

The Sports Management master’s team included students Steven McCune, Kayla Rorabaugh, and Bob Smith, who were advised by Dr. Richard Hsiao as well. The graduate team took full advantage of their first appearance at the national competition and came away with a fourth-place finish. The team narrowly missed out on a chance to defend their case study for a second day among the top three sports management teams in the country. The finalists were Georgia State University, Ball State, and Baylor University. Ultimately, the winner was Baylor University from Waco, Texas.

The Study:

The case study challenged the students to make a projection for the University of New Orleans, whose Division I athletic program has been struggling significantly since Hurricane Katrina destroyed much of its facilities and drove thousands of students away, many of which have yet to return. Currently, UNO Athletics has been running at a near $1 million per year deficit in addition to $5.5 million in backed payments. They have been struggling to maintain Division I status, which requires a school to house fourteen varsity teams. UNO currently only supports eight teams, with permission from the NCAA who granted them a five-year waiver to do so. Due to lack of funding, support, and a student body that has been reduced by nearly 10,000 in the years since pre-Katrina, the University of New Orleans is currently in the process of downgrading from a Division I university to a Division III program. This has forced the athletic department to make one of three decisions—(1) drop all athletics at the university, (2) change divisions from Division I to Division III, or (3) raise millions for the department in the private sector.

The Challenge:

The challenge was given to save the University of New Orleans athletics program. The scenario was given that each team has been commissioned to conduct a study on the University of New Orleans athletics program to determine the best way to keep the program at Division I. The study had to include a situation analysis and problem overview, diagnosis, alternative solution scenarios, and recommendations.

The Solution:

The IUP master’s students suggested that UNO switch conferences from the Sun Belt Conference to the Atlantic Sun Conference in an effort to reduce travel costs and conference fees and to compete against more viable competition. They also recommended an increase in student fees to help cover athletics costs, and to begin an aggressive athletics fundraising campaign. The undergraduates, on the other hand, found that going Division III was the best way to save UNO. Defending their solution, they used examples from schools such as Birmingham–Southern, which recently made the same move in division status. They also backed up their claims by developing situations that allowed the Division III downgrade, so that UNO can become financially stable, in addition to recommendations of cutting funding by reducing coaches salaries, scholarships, and team travel costs.

In Addition:

Aside from the competition, the renowned conference gave the students an opportunity to listen to and learn from a variety of keynote speakers at panel discussions. Various topics in college sport were discussed, including a heated debate titled “One and Done: What is the Effect of the NBA’s Age Limit Rule on the College Game?” The panelists included Mr. Gary Williams, men’s basketball coach at the University of Maryland; Mr. Ken Tysiac, notorious sports reporter from the Charlotte Observer; Mr. Michael McCann, professor at the Vermont Law School; Mr. Shane Lyons, the associate commissioner of Compliance at the Atlantic Coast Conference; and Mr. Darryl Dawkins, former NBA player and one of the first student-athletes to skip college to go straight to the NBA.

This experience provided the students with an excellent opportunity to represent IUP. The students and Dr. Hsiao were also given a private tour of UNC’s basketball facilities by the director of Basketball Operations and assistant coach Joe Holladay. The tour consisted of a visit to head coach Roy Williams’ office, the players’ lounge, locker room, weight room, and an awe-inspiring tunnel walk-through onto the basketball court at the Dean Smith Center.

In addition to the case study competition, the conference and visit also sent IUP students away with a fabulous educational experience, as well as a very memorable tour of one of the most celebrated basketball arenas in the world. Congratulations to Dr. Hsiao and the Sports Administration and Management students!

<img class="right-aligned-image" title="Mary Jo Lyttle" height="298" alt="Mary Jo Lyttle" https://www.iup.edu:443/uploadedImages/MaryJoLyttle.jpg width="200" align="right" border="0" />
The winner of the recent Biggest loser competition at the James G. Mill Center for Health and Fitness is Mary Jo Lyttle.

This past month wrapped up the Biggest Loser competition hosted by the James G. Mill Center for Health and Fitness in Zink Hall. The eight-week competition challenged contestants to lose as much body fat as possible in a fight for the title. With over twenty weight-loss contenders, there was some stiff competition. The Biggest Losers had their body fat measured at the beginning and the end of the cycle using the Bioelectrical Impedance Analysis. They were also given the opportunity for a personal trainer and access to the IUP dietetics interns. The Biggest Loser Competition was an extreme success, and we at the fitness center would like to thank everyone who participated and certainly applaud their efforts. Ultimately, the winner was Mary Jo Lyttle, executive director of the IUP Alumni Association. She lost over 5 percent body fat, a considerable amount for anyone over such a short time period. Lyttle made the time and commitment to living healthier and the results showed. Her hard work paid off, and she became the clear-cut winner.

Lyttle had this to say about the competition: “Working with the IUP Alumni Association, my job involves a lot of evening and weekend work with travel. So I am eating at unusual times, eating on the road, and always eating on the go. I balance my work with my family (my husband and two children, ages fourteen and eight). Put all of this together and it takes a lot of motivation to stay on track with eating right and working out. That's why the completion was a perfect opportunity! It was more than just another diet; it was an opportunity to learn and to become more physically fit. I always wanted to work with a personal trainer, but didn't know how I could fit another activity into my schedule. The short eight-week program and opportunity to learn from a personal trainer provided the perfect incentive for me to break away from my home treadmill and try something new.”

Lyttle continued to express her enthusiasm stating, “I was so impressed with the fitness center and the amazing equipment. Plus, my trainer, Shane Weiland, and the staff at the fitness center are great! I would encourage everyone to try the James G. Mill Center for Health and Fitness. We are very fortunate to have this fantastic facility with its wonderful staff and student support!”

Over the past few months, the Children’s Hospital of Philadelphia and Lehigh Valley Health Network (LVHN) have conducted a series of discussions with a wide range of stakeholders from throughout the state.

The common consensus is that the issue of teen driver safety cannot be addressed solely from an educational perspective. Safety education is only one important aspect of a dynamic environment that also includes education/research, medical health, public health, safety (law enforcement, insurance, engineering/construction), youth development, and politics/legislative perspectives. Clearly, there is a need to coordinate efforts across institutions and industries.

The most recent optimization of efforts began at the Driver Education Forum held at LVHN in Allentown on October 9, 2009. The forum resulted in the formation of the Pennsylvania Teen Driver Safety Alliance. The mission of the alliance is to promote best practices in education and policy to improve teen driving safety in Pennsylvania.

After the October 9 Driver Education Forum, the alliance used adaptive planning strategies such as a series of four conference calls to address geographical and scheduling challenges. Discussions centered on alliance goals/objectives and strategies.

An outgrowth of the conference calls is the webinar series that was conducted in February/March of 2010. In essence, the webinar aimed to educate a statewide audience as to the complexities of teen driving safety issues, as was modeled in the Lehigh Valley.

With the support of colleagues from Children’s Hospital of Philadelphia and PennDOT, Dr. Louis Pesci, Indiana University of Pennsylvania, and consultants Bill Warner and Rich Hanson offered three one-hour presentations.

After a very successful first go-around, IUP’s Biggest Loser competition is back for the second time this school year. The weight loss contest, hosted by the James G. Mill Center for Health and Fitness in Zink Hall, has implemented some new and improved changes, including the option for personal training!

The contest is open to anyone who would like to join, and sign-up is only $15. Get ready to challenge yourself and have fun doing so!

It’s certainly not too early to get started working on that summer body, so stop by the James G. Mill Center for Health and Fitness next week—Monday, February 1, until Thursday, February 4, 2010—to sign up. Those who enter the competition are encouraged, but not required, to purchase a two-month promotional James Mill Fitness Center membership for a small additional fee of $20. The competition begins February 1, 2010, and lasts for eight weeks, wrapping up on March 29, 2010. The winner will receive a free one-year fitness center membership as well as a $50 gift certificate to Donatello’s Restaurant in Indiana, Pa.

To ensure a fair competition, we have implemented the use of the Bioelectrical Impedance Analysis (BIA), which accurately measures body fat percentage. The individual with the highest percentage of body fat lost during the eight-week competition will be determined the winner! The option for nutrition advice and counseling is also available, with the help of IUP’s dietetic interns, throughout the duration of the contest.

Here’s what you need to know:

Start and end dates: Starting Monday, February 1, 2010 – Ending March 29, 2010

Sign-up: Will take place in the James Mill Fitness Center (second floor of Zink Hall) from Monday, February 1, until Thursday, February 4, 2010. This is when the BIA test will take place (normal attire may be worn). Please stop in during our operating hours to sign up.

Fitness Center Hours: Monday–Friday 5:30–8:00 a.m., 11:00 a.m.–1:00 p.m., 4:00–8:00 p.m. (Fridays: 4:00–6:00 p.m.; Saturdays: 9:00–11:00 a.m. Please stop by during these times to sign up February 1–4,2010.

Final testing will take place from March 29, until April 1, 2010. After all testing has been completed, the winner will be announced.

Personal training option. Please note: This is only an option, competitors are not required to take advantage of this service and may work out on their own. Student volunteers from the Health and Physical Education Department will be in charge of your training. Personal training appointments may not be available each time you are at the gym. Training times must be scheduled in advance and are only available when student trainers are scheduled to be on hand. Also, you may not have the same personal trainer throughout the competition. Please realize that this is a free service implementing undergraduate student volunteers, and, in rare cases, trainers may not be available during scheduled appointments. A student trainer is only available to those who sign up for the two-month membership package, in addition to the contest fee.

Cost of contest: $15

Promotional gym membership fee: $20 (two months) + $15 (contest fee) = $35 total

The fitness center membership will last for eight weeks during competition. The application fee will be waived; however, for those who choose to sign up for the fitness center after the contest is over, an application fee will be charged. You are not required to join the fitness center—this is only an option if you do not have anywhere to work out or are already a member at another gym.

We want you to join, so help make this event a continued success! Gather your friends and coworkers to join in on the fight against body fat and enjoy healthier living along the way. Mill Fitness Center" href="https://www.iup.edu:443/WorkArea/linkit.aspx?LinkIdentifier=id&ItemID=63641">James G. Mill Center for Health and Fitness has named IUP’s Biggest Loser! Lia Holtz was crowned the champion of the weight-loss competition after a hard-fought battle among competitors.

During the eight-week contest, Holtz, who is the assistant director of Arts and Entertainment, lost over 6 percent body fat, a considerable amount for her tiny 5’7” frame.

Competition coordinators Hayley MacDonald and Kayla Rorabaugh noticed her progress early on and throughout the program. Holtz was dedicated to hitting the gym hard and set a great example for the other competitors who took advantage of the faculty/staff and the adult fitness center. At the beginning and again at the end of competition, the competitors were assessed using the BOD POD, which is the gold standard for measuring body composition and is actually used on NBC’s show The Biggest Loser. Contestants also received nutritional counseling from IUP dietetic interns.

Holtz, who joined the Biggest Loser competition mainly for the BOD POD analysis, said that the competition “served as a great motivator.”

“The program was great with tips on eating and working out from the staff, and appointments with student dietetics interns” Holtz said, adding, “I really like the gym in Zink Hall better than other gyms I have been a member of because of the friendly and knowledgeable staff, convenient hours, and well-maintained equipment. I would recommend this program and the Zink Gym to anyone looking to tone up or lose those few extra holiday pounds!”

As a prize for her healthy accomplishments, Holtz will receive a much-deserved one-hour massage at the Woods Spa. She is also the winner of a free one-year gym membership. Holtz is a true inspiration to all at IUP, and the James G. Mill Center for Health and Fitness is lucky to have her as a member.

Other notable weight-loss performances include the leader of the men in the competition, Aquatics Maintenance Operator Joe "The Pool Guy" Gordon. He came in second overall by losing fifteen pounds! Gordon can credit his success to being extremely innovative in changing his diet and becoming more physically active. Also, Tracey Emanuel, from the School of Graduate Studies and Research, lost an astounding seventeen pounds during the eight-week competition.

Congratulations to all, and keep up the good work!

The Indiana University of Pennsylvania health and physical education department’s Exercise Science program recently was awarded initial five-year accreditation by the Commission on Accreditation of Allied Health Education Programs.

The award makes the program’s undergraduate component one of 10 accredited undergraduate programs in the nation, according to the commission, which is the largest programmatic accrediting body in the allied health sciences.

Accreditation signifies compliance with nationally established accreditation standards and recognizes that the program has significant emphasis on practical application of classroom learning, tracking outcomes and following students past graduation, according to Madeline Bayles, coordinator of IUP’s Exercise Science program.

Bayles said the accreditation occurred after a yearlong collaboration among program faculty members, including Mark Sloniger, Robert Alman, Leslie Stenger, Elaine Blair and Carleen Zoni, dean of the College of Health and Human Services.

“The entire department is to be congratulated on this achievement,” Zoni said. “Accreditation, especially first-time accreditation, is a vigorous and comprehensive effort and requires extensive documentation.”

IUP’s Exercise Science program is endorsed by the American College of Sports Medicine under the University Connection Program.
