]]>As part of their course work, Gale Noonan, Audra Palmo, Chris Baum, Donna Pike, Heidi Buterbaugh, Jennie Feight, Polly Davis, and Sonya Arotin, along with Professor Nashat Zuraikat, completed a book review of author Bill Strickland’s Make the Impossible Possible; One Man’s Crusade to Inspire Others to Dream Bigger and Achieve the Extraordinary. This book review was completed as part of the requirements for HSAD 761 (Human Services Administration Practicum) and will be published in the Journal of Health Care for the Poor and Underserved, Volume 20, November 4, 2009. Dr. Nashat Zuraikat was the instructor for this course and assisted the students with this publication.

]]>Data collected from nine public universities in Pennsylvania (n=3599) were used to provide a descriptive and correlational analysis that explores faculty attitudes, beliefs and experiences related to internationalization; reviews the extent to which faculty incorporate an international perspective into their teaching, research and scholarship; determines what relationships exist between faculty characteristics, campus climate, and their attitudes, beliefs, and behaviors; and examines patterns that are used to describe or predict a faculty members’ “orientation to internationalization” (Morris, 1996).
Research findings show that important differences in internationalization exist among the faculty by gender, tenure status, discipline, academic rank, and teaching/research preferences. Faculty with higher levels of international experiences at different educational stages have higher levels of involvement in internationalization as faculty members, and they also have more favorable attitudes and beliefs towards internationalization. A factor analysis of data about “Attitudes and Beliefs about Internationalization” revealed three factors related to the scholarship of research and teaching, instruction and curriculum, and the impact of curriculum on students.
A definition for the construct of “Orientation to Internationalization” is provided. Several of the research findings replicate findings from the Carnegie Foundation for the Advancement of Teaching’s Study of the International Academic Profession (Altbach, 1996) and build upon previous research conducted by the American Council on Education and other university-based researchers interested in internationalization.
The research was supported by a grant from the University of Pittsburgh and received an award from the Association of International Education Administrators in 2006. The book is available through Amazon.com and Barnes & Noble.
]]>Graduate students must wear many hats. They exist in a go-between world where they are not quite students and not quite professionals. However, like the professionals, they are expected to contribute worthwhile scholarship to their field. This can be problematic because typically, attending conferences, creating experiments, and conducting basic research costs money—which is a commodity few graduate students possess. Grants can alleviate this problem by providing much-needed funds, but most grad students have no idea where to look for these opportunities.
That’s where we come in. The School of Graduate Studies and Research is hosting a workshop on how and where to find grant information. Come join Joshua Begley in the Allegheny Room on November 18 from 11:00 to 1:00 for a tutorial in researching grants. Lunch will be provided.

The presentation will be on Qualrus, a qualitative analysis program. Attendees do not need prior experience in qualitative analysis. Areas covered will include beginning work, opening sources, assigning codes, analysis, saving files, and generating a report. Specific analysis will include the Search function, Hypothessis Testing, Categorizing, Coincidental Codes, Refinement, Generalizing, Statistics, and Consistency. Handouts will be provided, as well as informaiton on how to obtain the Qualrus Manual.
