Attending the WestPACS Job Fair (November 4, 2009, from 10:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m. at the Monroeville Convention Center) introduces you to the realities of the job search.
What is Into the Streets?

Into the Streets is a biannual day of service in which IUP students are invited to become involved in the community helping various agencies who participate. It is an opportunity for local nonprofit and/or human service agencies to finish projects that may have been postponed due to lack of time or resources. Past projects include tree planting/landscaping, conducting clean-up efforts, painting, and offering services to the aged or physically challenged. The projects are determined by the agencies involved.

Can I get some background information about Into the Streets?

Into the Streets is not unique to IUP. It is national and encourages university members to participate and become active members of the local communities. For some, the program provides a first-time experience, yet for others it is just one way that both the Indiana community and the IUP community are striving to bridge the gap between the classroom and the local community.

Mandatory meetings scheduled for agencies and individuals/group organizations:

Meet Micheal Binkley, the 2008 Student Employee of the Year.

Hello, my name is Michael Binkley and I am a senior majoring in Accounting and Finance, with a minor in Economics. Since the fall of 2006 I have worked in the departments of Philosophy and Religious Studies. Working there I have learned that to be successful you have to distinguish yourself from the rest of the crowd. In the following I will share with you some tips to do just that.

A simple way to be noticed is to have the right attitude. Being polite and positive will improve your interactions with students, coworkers, and professors. Saying thank you or complimenting somebody on a job well done are often neglected niceties. People appreciate sincere good manners and will treat you with respect in return. To use a cliché, it is a win-win situation.

Another way to stand out is to bring attention to detail and craftsmanship to your job. Doing these things can improve the overall quality of almost any project. In an age of digital standardization I specialize in creative solutions to technological problems. For example, anybody can use a copier. It takes skill to learn everything that can go wrong with it and be able to fix most of it. Also, it requires experimentation and creativity to copy photos or odd shaped objects. Another example is scanning. Anybody can use a scanner's basic functions. However, to be able to scan something in a small file size that looks exactly like the original document requires technique. As can be seen from the preceding examples, there is a way to stand out even when working on the simplest tasks.

Working harder than others will also get people's attention. Some individuals will only do the minimum required to complete a job. Devoting a little more time to a project, though, can create superior results. For example, proofreading or checking over an assignment may catch small errors before they become larger problems. It will also improve the overall quality of your work. Adding useful extras to tasks, such as including pencils or scoresheets with copies of tests, can make other people's work easier. And, doing a little more for somebody else will get you noticed.

Taking the initiative and setting your own priorities is also important. You cannot simply do work as it comes in. To be successful you must determine when something is due, how long it will take, and what priority it is in relation to other work. Taking the initial time to do these things can actually save you time in the long run. You will know exactly when tasks need to be done and you may even have time to handle other tasks. This will definitely get the attention of your supervisors.

Ultimately, a job is an opportunity to showcase your knowledge, skills, and abilities. And, by doing that, you will not only gain recognition but also make the job a better experience for you and everybody else.

I began my employment with the Office of Student and Alumni Services in the Eberly College of Business and Information Technology in February 2005 during my sophomore year. I would like to share some tips with you regarding becoming a successful and invaluable student employee at IUP. Below are advice and information that I have gained based on my experience as an IUP student employee.

I believe the first and most important item in becoming a successful student employee is developing a good relationship with your coworkers; this includes other IUP students, secretaries, and most importantly, your supervisor/boss. Developing this relationship from day one on the job will allow you to gain knowledge on certain topics such as what the appropriate dress is for the job and how you should perform your work. Dressing appropriately is important to your supervisor/boss and also the university itself, because as a student employee, you are representing IUP. When deciding what to wear, keep in mind that going to work is not the same as going to class, i.e. you would not show up in your pajamas or an outfit you might wear to go out with friends. Instead, you want to be conservative about your clothing choice and look at your job as a real job, where you would want to impress your employer and advertise the company well.

Most student employee jobs on campus are going to require some type of interaction with your fellow students, and possibly alumni, parents, faculty, and staff. This type of interaction gives student employees the chance to network with a variety of people from different backgrounds and develop lifelong relationships. Although you may not be aware of it now, networking is valuable to your future career and can assist you in finding internships and full-time jobs. Therefore, as you are assisting customers at your job, keep in mind that you should treat them with respect. Even if you become overwhelmed with many different tasks at your job, try to have as much patience with your customers as possible because this will ease your job, and your customers will be satisfied. Sometimes you just need to take a few minutes and listen closely to someone’s problem, and you can easily point that person in the right direction instead of ignoring what he or she has to say and sending the person to another office for help.

My job as a student employee at IUP has brought many opportunities my way and given me the chance to grow and prosper as a person. The relationships that I have developed with my coworkers, not only in the office where I work, but in the Eberly of College of Business and Information Technology in general, are extremely important to me. It is a good feeling when you go to work and see not only faculty members, but other staff members as well, and they know you by your first name. I have benefited from my job by developing better communication skills, networking skills, and the ability to help students understand the academic process at IUP. During the summer of 2007, I interned at PricewaterhouseCoopers in Pittsburgh. As I went to work each day, I noticed many similarities to my job at IUP, including networking, how to dress for the job, representing the company at a client site, being able to multitask, and working together as a team. I hope every student employee at IUP has a successful year!
