]]>The College of Health and Human Services recently honored Dr. Sharon Deutschlander, Health and Physical Education Department, with its 2010 Outstanding Teacher Award and Dr. Jennifer Roberts, Criminology Department, with its 2010 Research Award.
Deutschlander was recognized in her nomination as an “excellent example of a true teacher-scholar, who excels in both knowledge base and pedagogical technique.” She also was recognized for outstanding student evaluations and active work in advancing professional development of students. She teaches at the undergraduate and graduate levels and supervises ten to sixteen student teachers each semester. As the college’s Undergraduate Teacher Education coordinator, she represents her department on the College of Education and Educational Technology Teacher Education Coordinators Council.
Before coming to IUP, Deutschlander had more than twenty years of experience in public school education and as executive director of a substance abuse treatment center. She assumed leadership of IUP’s Comprehensive Tobacco Control Program in 2005 and has secured more than $160,000 in grant funding for the program.
She is a published author and has been an invited presenter locally, regionally, and nationally on topics including school bullying and hazing, tattooing and piercings, and difficult adolescents. She also has been an educator in the regional HIV Update workshops for educators.
Deutschlander has served as president of the Indiana Armstrong Association for Health, Physical Education, Recreation, and Dance.
Roberts received the Research Award for her study “Peripheral Criminal Activity: An Examination of How In-Home and Office-Based Clinicians Handle Knowledge of Criminal Activity.”
This project is designed to research licensed, counseling clinicians in Pennsylvania and their understanding of mandatory reporting laws related to criminal activity.
She will receive $500 to help fund this project, which will survey more than 1,600 licensed, professional clinicians working in Western Pennsylvania.

]]>Representatives will be on hand to talk with students and answer questions from the following departments: Safety Sciences, Child and Family Studies, Food and Nutrition, Exercise Science, Nursing, Respiratory Care, Clinical Lab Sciences, and Nuclear Medicine Technology.
Ann Sesti from the Center for Health and Well-Being will be on hand to discuss “What Happens if I have a DUI on My Record?” for health professional students.
The event will be held in the fourth floor lounge of Maple East (Wellness Suites).
