The deadline for submissions is May 6, 2012.

Programs will relate to the conference theme: Finding a Voice and Leading for Change. Leadership may be demonstrated in the home, workplace, politics, volunteer efforts, the university, corporations, media, etc.

Proposals may include panel discussions (several speakers presenting on a theme), experiential workshops (hands-on programs in which attendees will learn new skills or information through active engagement and participation), traditional paper presentations (original research presented to the audience), or roundtable discussions (leader has a primary issue and initiates the discussion on a particular topic then facilitates discussion among participants). All sessions will be one hour in length.

Proposals should include

A short title for the session

Names and titles (as you would like them written in the conference program) and e-mail addresses of all presenters

A 500 (or fewer) word abstract describing the proposed topic. Indicate if you will be doing a panel discussion, workshop, traditional paper presentation, or roundtable.

A résumé or curriculum vita for at least one of the presenters.

Please submit proposals electronically to womensstudies@calu.edu by May 6, 2012. Please be aware that if your proposal is accepted, conference officials expect that you are committed to attending.

Did You Know?

Women comprise half the paid workforce and extend more unpaid volunteer hours than men. At home, women do two-thirds of the housework and spend double the time on family care than men. More than 60 percent of undergraduate degrees and about half of all graduate degrees are awarded to women. Women “do it all,” except land the privileges and opportunities to lead.

Twelve Fortune 500 companies (2.4 percent) are led by women. Congress boasts a mere 16 percent of seats held by women. Three percent of clout positions in mainstream media are held by women. Thirteen percent of Sunday news show guests are women. Only 13.5 percent of universities are led by female presidents. Across the board, women earn less than men, costing women on average $1,000,000 over a lifetime.

Now, more than ever, the world needs female leaders to bring their voices to the table. Evidence shows that when a worthy percentage of women is at the table, policies become more family friendly, companies see higher profits for shareholders, and employees are more satisfied with their jobs. When women find their voices at home, it leads to greater equity, greater commitment, and greater satisfaction for families. Moreover, money is spent in ways that are advantageous to the health and well-being of families.

The following formats for presentations are being accepted:

Topic/Research Panels: Panel proposals should include one to four people exploring a specific topic. Panel proposals should include the names and contact information for the panelists, the titles of their presentations, an overall title for the panel, and a rationale.

Teaching Panel: A teaching panel includes one to five people seeking to educate the attendees of the conference about a topic area. Teaching panel proposals should include the names and contact information for participants, an overall title, and a rationale. You do not need to be a professor to offer a teaching panel.

Performance Panel: A performance panel allows participants to perform a theatrical piece, artistic work, or musical piece for the conference attendees. Performance panel proposals should include the names and contact information for participants, an overall title, and a rationale.

One of the goals of the PASSHE Women’s Consortium conferences is to foster discussion among participants. Regardless of the format of the presentation, presenters need to allow time for discussion of the topics and are encouraged to actively engage audience members.

All members of the university community—students (undergraduate and graduate), faculty and staff members, and administrators—are encouraged to propose panels for the annual conference.

Two groups will perform at the fourth annual Native American Festival, hosted by IUP's Native American Awareness Council, on Saturday, November 13, 2010, starting at noon in the HUB Delaware Room.

Bill Crouse and the Allegany River Indian Dancers will perform at 1:00 and 3:00 p.m.

The group specializes in Iroquois social dance presentations from the Northeastern Woodlands. The performers are well known for their intertribal Powwow-style dances, such as the hoop dance. One highlight of their program is the "Smoke Dance." Bill Crouse is a member of the Seneca Nation and a member of the Hawk Clan, whom he represents as a faith keeper of the Coldspring Longhouse of the Allegany Indian Reservation in New York.

Kathy Johnston and the Drums of Native Sisters will perform at noon and 2:00 p.m.

The group's seven female members have special relationships with each other and with their chosen instrument. Hailing from different points in Southwestern Pennsylvania, these mothers, daughters, and friends come together to express their various Native American cultures through the common tradition of song. It is a tradition they will share with the IUP and Indiana area communities on Saturday. This is the second year the group will take part in the annual festival, combining vocals in English and native tongues with the synchronized beat of their drums.

The month of October has been set aside as Disability Awareness Month at IUP. The first event will feature keynote speaker David Carson on October 13, 2010, from 2:00 to 4:00 p.m. in the HUB Ohio Room. The theme of the program is “Expanding the Mainstream.”

David Carson learned at the age of twenty-five that he had a learning disability. This disability hampered his ability to excel in the classroom and also his belief in himself. He flunked out of three schools before finally graduating from college and successfully completed two further diplomas.

He can now see where he went wrong when he first attempted to progress through school. His perspective is genuine and his goal sincere; he truly wants to help young adults who are heading to college and assist them in succeeding and believing in themselves.

As keynote presenter, Carson will discuss his life and personal journey in completing college. Using real-life experiences and information from his book, Survival Guide for College-Bound LD Students, he will review the skills and coping strategies it takes for young adults to succeed in college.

The purpose of Disability Awareness Month at IUP is to advance our commitment to increase awareness and promote independence, integration, and inclusion of all people with disabilities at our university.

The month of October has been set aside as Disability Awareness Month at IUP.

To advance our commitment to increase awareness and promote independence, integration, and inclusion of all people with disabilities at our university, we are planning a special program, “Expanding the Mainstream,” on Wednesday, October 13, 2010, from 2:00 to 4:00 p.m. in the Hadley Union Building, Ohio Room.

We are inviting representatives from campus, as well as from local agencies, to be available at resource tables to disseminate information about their departments and programs, and to answer any questions students may have about the services they provide.

Our keynote presentation will feature Mr. David Carson, a motivational speaker who had overcome his own learning disability. Not only will he share his personal story with us, but he will provide encouragement to others to never let their problems stand in the way of success.

Mr. Carson is the author of Survival Guide for College-Bound L.D. Students, a book used by twenty-four colleges and universities across the country, which details his struggles and eventual triumph over his learning disability and issues with low self-esteem.

If your program or department is interested in sponsoring a resource table, please contact Patti Krausslach in the Social Equity Office at 724-357-3402, or email at patkraus@iup.edu.

A film featuring the perspective of a full-blooded Native American and Indiana University of Pennsylvania employee will air on IUP-TV from January 18 to 24, 2010, at 7:00 p.m.

“We Have Survived: A Native American Perspective of the 21st Century” features an interview by Dr. Richard Lamberski, professor of Communications Media at IUP, with Clifton Pembleton, a Tuscarora Native American.

During the interview, Pembleton discusses the thriving culture of Native Americans today and his perspective on subjects such as the history of his people; Native American art, language, values, and beliefs; and the structure of Native American tribes. The video was produced for the IUP Native American Awareness Council (NAAC), a constituent of the Office of Social Equity and Civic Engagement, to raise awareness of the Native American culture at the university and beyond.

Pembleton, a member of the Tuscarora Tribe of the Iroquois Confederacy, has been an automotive dispatcher at IUP for twenty-two years and chair of the IUP NAAC since 2007.

The fifty-minute video also includes footage of Native American artwork, contemporary Pow Wows, and traditional Native American music.

In addition, four other Native Americans—Ezra Fields of the Pawnee Tribe, Joanne Rickard-Weinholtz of the Tuscarora Tribe, Bill Crouse of the Seneca Tribe, and Kathy Johnston of the Seneca, Crow, Micmac, and Lakota tribes—give personal perspectives on their culture and heritage.

Post-production editing was done by Chris Barber, systems technician for IUP-TV.
