  <content:encoded><![CDATA[<p class="introduction">The <a title="Frederick Douglass Institute for Intercultural Research" href="https://www.iup.edu:443/WorkArea/linkit.aspx?LinkIdentifier=id&amp;ItemID=3087">Frederick Douglass Institute for Intercultural Research</a> is currently seeking presenters for its Issues of Diversity: Voices from the Field series, which will run in Spring 2013. The series provides an informal and supportive setting for discussion of scholarly and academic work in areas of diversity, social justice, and inclusion.</p>
<p>Participants can present their work at a variety of stages of completion, from inception and early findings to fairly polished pieces. Those preparing for presentation, publication, and grant writing opportunities within the university and beyond are especially encouraged to participate. Undergraduate, graduate, and faculty presenters can come from any discipline or field represented at IUP.</p>

  <content:encoded><![CDATA[<p class="introduction">Veronica Gonzalez and Carla Neckles have been selected as Frederick Douglass Institute Scholars for 2012.</p>
<p>Gonzalez, of the Claremont Graduate School in Claremont, Calif., guest lectured in a number of workshops offered by the <a title="Professional Studies in Education" href="https://www.iup.edu:443/WorkArea/linkit.aspx?LinkIdentifier=id&amp;ItemID=3357">Professional Studies in Education</a> Department in Summer 2012. Additionally, she had intensive instruction in online course development and delivery for education courses and workshops.</p>
<p>Neckles taught one course in the <a title="Chemistry" href="https://www.iup.edu:443/WorkArea/linkit.aspx?LinkIdentifier=id&amp;ItemID=5675">Chemistry Department</a> in Summer 2012 and is completing her doctorate in chemistry at Stony Brook University. She plans to defend her research in Spring 2014.</p>

  <description><![CDATA[<p>The Frederick Douglass Institute Collaborative announced in September 2012 that sophomores and juniors from across the State System who are preparing to pursue the Ph.D. after graduation can be considered for the Yale Summer Undergraduate Research Fellowship program.</p>]]></description>

  <content:encoded><![CDATA[<p class="introduction">The Frederick Douglass Institute Collaborative announced in September 2012 an exceptional opportunity for undergraduate students who are preparing to pursue the Ph.D. after graduation. The Collaborative has partnered with the Yale Summer Undergraduate Research Fellowship (SURF) to allow sophomores and juniors from across the Pennsylvania State System of Higher Education to be considered for the prestigious SURF program.</p>
<p>If selected, students are housed at no charge in a Yale dormitory, receive a food allowance, and receive a stipend of $3,000 upon successful participation in, and completion of, the program. Transportation to and from the program is also covered.</p>
<p>Veronica Watson, program director of the <a title="Frederick Douglass Institute for Intercultural Research" href="https://www.iup.edu:443/WorkArea/linkit.aspx?LinkIdentifier=id&amp;ItemID=3087">Frederick Douglass Institute for Intercultural Research</a> at IUP and who also serves as the statewide convener for the Frederick Douglass Institute Collaborative, said, “I am so pleased that our talented undergraduate researchers will now be able to compete for this honor. We have many who can benefit from the process of presenting their work for consideration by the Yale SURF even if they are not selected. But, I am confident that IUP's students are among the best in the country and will excel here too!”</p>

  <content:encoded><![CDATA[<img class="right-aligned-image" title="Professor Veronica Watson" border="0" alt="Professor Veronica Watson" align="right" https://www.iup.edu:443/uploadedImages/Watson_200.jpg width="200" height="241" /><p class="introduction">English professor Veronica Watson has been appointed for a third year as the statewide convener of the <u>Frederick Douglass Institute Collaborative</u>.</p>
<p>"I am excited about the direction the collaborative is taking on a number of initiatives, from launching new programs that will be open to students across the system to revamping the Douglass Global Education Initiative to meet 21st-century needs of students in the Commonwealth," said Watson.</p>
<p>Further new initiatives include the launch of the Douglass Debate Society and and plans for an annual excursion to Washington, D.C.</p>
<p>The Frederick Douglass Institute Collaborative includes a number of FDIs on campuses in the Pennsylvania State System of Higher Education.</p>]]></content:encoded>

  <content:encoded><![CDATA[<p class="introduction">Dr. Veronica Watson has been appointed for a second year as convener of the statewide Frederick Douglass Institute Partnership.</p>
<p>Watson says she is pleased to continue in the position and to see the Douglass Partnership moving forward despite the difficult budget times facing the PASSHE.</p>
<p>“When it comes to advancing the goals of equity and inclusion in the System, the local FDI leadership teams continue to be among the most committed and creative faculty, staff, and administrators on our campuses,” Watson said.</p>
<p>The Frederick Douglass Institute Partnership is the collective of the FDIs that reside on each campus in the State System.</p>

  <content:encoded><![CDATA[<p class="introduction">Three IUP faculty members have been awarded PDE Keystone grants of $2,000 each—Crystal Machado, Gloria Park, and Todd Thompson. The winners were selected through a competitive, peer-reviewed awarding process administered by the statewide <a title="Douglass Institute" href="https://www.iup.edu:443/WorkArea/linkit.aspx?LinkIdentifier=id&amp;ItemID=3087">Frederick Douglass Institute</a> Collaborative.</p>
<p>Crystal Machado, of the <a title="Professional Studies in Education" href="https://www.iup.edu:443/WorkArea/linkit.aspx?LinkIdentifier=id&amp;ItemID=3357">Department of Professional Studies in Education</a>, will be completing a project entitled “Making Diversity Work: International Students Describe their Experiences at a Predominantly White University in the East Coast.” Gloria Park will be working on “Undergraduate Students’ Voices: Raising Awareness of Social Justice Issues through Research Writing.” Todd Thompson project is entitled “Laughing Du-Plomacy: Frederick Douglass, Northern Racism, and Satiric Rhetoric.” Both Park and Thompson are faculty members in the <a title="English" href="https://www.iup.edu:443/WorkArea/linkit.aspx?LinkIdentifier=id&amp;ItemID=10211">Department of English</a>.</p>
<p>The grants support travel for research and conference presentations, student assistants, and transcription and manuscript preparation services.</p>]]></content:encoded>
