As an undergraduate student at IUP, Scott enjoyed an active life that included sports, mountain biking, fishing, and hiking. He also joined the Tau Kappa Epsilon (TKE) fraternity, a brotherhood that made an impression on his life far beyond his expectations.

The days are growing shorter for this year’s State Employee Combined Appeal. Thanksgiving has traditionally been targeted as the close of IUP’s SECA campaign.

Mark Geletka, campaign chairman, has the following message for faculty and staff members still undecided about their campaign participation.

“Please consider sharing your good fortune to help those who are in need of help, especially in these stressful economic times,” Geletka said. “You may decide to direct your donation to literally hundreds of qualified organizations, including those in Indiana County.”

As of November 16, 2009, a total of 131 IUP employees had pledged and/or donated $33,294 toward the 2010 goal of $50,000.

“To those who have already pledged,” Geletka said, “thank you for helping those who use our donations in so many good ways. For those of you who are considering helping out, please choose to make a difference for those less fortunate by sending in a donation or pledge before Thanksgiving. Payroll deduction is a very convenient way to help all year long.”

A Resource Guide with a complete list of charities is on line at the state SECA site. Also on the Web is information tailored to IUP donors (See the IUP SECA website). Questions may also be answered by any member of the IUP Task Force: Mark Geletka, Bobbie Douglass, Erin Fritz, Karen Gresh, Barbe Moore, Sam Phillips, Patti Simmons, and Ramesh Soni.

All IUP donors to SECA are eligible to win a variety of incentives in a special drawing to be held at the campaign’s conclusion. They include the following:

Flat-screen HDTV

Reserved parking space on campus for a full academic year

Blu-Ray DVD Player

Apple iPod Nano

Gas gift card

Grocery gift card

Local restaurant gift certificates

A video in which Pagnucci, a professor of English, introduces his research interests was posted Monday on Facebook, the popular social-networking website. IUP’s Facebook fans have since been adding their comments and questions. Pagnucci will answer those questions in a second video to be posted later today.

Fans have been weighing in on topics such as

Should professors use Facebook as a teaching tool?

Do comic books have a place in the classroom?

Would a graphic novel be appropriate for the Common Freshman Reader program?

Does your department or office have programs, services, activities, or events of interest to the community at large?

Let’s work together to get the word out.

The Communications office has plans to beef up the Community Outreach section of the IUP website, so it includes all IUP activities the greater community is welcome or encouraged to attend.

Then, we’ll drive traffic to our community page using printed pieces and mentions in various media outlets.

What You Can Do

You can do two things to help with these efforts:

Make sure there is a presence on your department or office website for activities available to the community.

Let us know where to find them.

For any of these services or activities that are already included on your website, simply e-mail web-team@iup.edu and provide the specific location on your site—URL is best.

For anything that is not currently on the website, work with your department or office web maintainer to get the material posted. If you need help determining where to place this material or if you need technical guidance, contact the Web Team.

The Central Calendar is key to publicizing events, so please make use of it. All web maintainers can post to the Central Calendar. For guidance, see Adding an Event to Your Website Calendar.

Because the Central Calendar will be available from the Community Outreach page, you won’t need to notify the Web Team about events you place there.

Your contributions are appreciated. Together, we can make the greater community aware of the resource it has in IUP.

This month's IUP Magazine Web Exclusive focuses on IUP alumnus Mike Sherry ’90, founder and president of the Miracle League of Southwestern Pennsylvania.

The Miracle League lets special needs children play baseball regardless of their ability. Sherry has worked for the past two years to bring the national organization to the Pittsburgh area. The league's efforts were rewarded with the grand opening of the Miracle League Field in May 2009.

“It’ll change your life, I guarantee it. It’s a wonderful, wonderful thing to see,” Sherry said in an interview featured in the Summer 2009 issue of IUP Magazine.

No baseball skills are required, and each team and each player always win. “Buddies” assist each player—volunteers age twelve and older who are trained in how to help the players, regardless of the child’s need.

Sherry and the others who helped build the field (thanks in part to a $200,000 pledge from the Pirates Charities, the philanthropic arm of the Pittsburgh Pirates) want to serve as many as possible of the estimated 90,000 disabled children who live in southwestern Pennsylvania.

For the full story plus photos of the players, visit the Web Exclusive article in IUP Magazine.

To more thoroughly promote faculty and staff accomplishments, we are changing the way we accept submissions to the Faculty and Staff Stars section of IUP Reporter, the monthly tabloid sent to employees and friends of IUP.

Beginning October 24, we will only accept submissions that have made their way into the department or office website news section. Those who wish to submit news should forward to my-news@iup.edu a link to the specific news post on the department website.

Because space in IUP Reporter is limited, we can accommodate only brief news items; however, faculty and staff members are encouraged to post much more extensive entries on the department website news section.

Why are we changing the process? Because ensuring that the news appears first on the department or office website makes that site more easily found by Google. It gives your site keywords that are vital to a successful Google search. It proves to prospective students, prospective faculty members, alumni, and others who don't receive IUP Reporter that your department has faculty members who are active experts in their respective fields. And, posting the items in the news section makes them accessible to other websites through RSS feeds. This new practice is consistent with the Communications Office's web-first strategy. For more information on how this practice can benefit you and your department, see materials from the recent Web Maintainers' Summit, Beyond Maintenance: Promoting Your Unit on the Web.

If you've visited IUP's homepage, watched TV, or driven down major highways, you've noticed the university's new advertising campaign called Get My Story. The Communications Office wants more stories. If you are a student who would like to be the subject of one of the Get My Story profiles, this is your chance to audition.

Make a video telling us why your story would be a good one to promote IUP. We're more interested in your story than the quality of the video production you submit, so go ahead and use your phone or your roommate's video camera. Post your one- to three-minute audition to YouTube, then send a link to the video to regan.houser@iup.edu. Please be sure to make your submission using your official IUP e-mail account and include your name and phone number. The subject line should read Here's My Story.

We're looking for students who have taken advantage of what our campus has to offer–be it athletics, clubs, performance ensembles, student government, internships, study abroad, volunteering, independent study, scholarly competitions, etc. We're not necessarily looking for academic superstars, although if you happen to be one, consider it a bonus point.

Deadline for submissions is November 7.

On September 8, during Monday Night Football, IUP will formally launch its “Get My Story” advertising campaign, featuring our own students.

The commercial will air in the Pittsburgh DMA (designated market area) over Comcast on ESPN. IUP will have a “Get My Story” commercial on Monday Night Football for the next 17 weeks. We in the Communications Office hope you get a chance to see one of the commercial spots this season. Donovan Daniel, an exercise science major, is the focus of this first commercial.

IUP will also run “Get My Story” commercials Tuesday through Friday the week of September 8 on the Today Show (NBC), Good Morning America (ABC) and the CBS Morning Show. The spots will air at approximately 7:20 each morning on each station (a total of 12 spots airing once each morning on each morning show). They should be the first commercial spot aired coming out of the national broadcast. Donovan and Christie Ritchey, a biology major, are each featured in these spots.

Over the next two months, various Comcast channels, billboards, radio commercials and print ads, as well as new media in the Pittsburgh DMA, will feature the “Get My Story” campaign, which direct viewers to get more of the featured students’ story on our website. This week, you will be able to get the rest of Donovan’s and Christie’s stories by going to our homepage and selecting their picture in the viewmaster, where you can read more about them and view a flash video with a story that builds upon their respective commercial. I encourage you to first watch one of the commercial spots this week and then go to the IUP website to learn more about these outstanding students.

We believe this ongoing integrated campaign will be highly effective in generating broad positive awareness of IUP in the Pittsburgh DMA, and we hope you will take pride in IUP and the students who have agreed to share their stories and experiences.

New efforts in marketing and recruitment have led to a formalized system of graphic standards for IUP, bringing a new look to the traditional logo.

New efforts in marketing and recruitment have led to a formalized system of graphic standards for IUP, but rather than pitch out the old logos and other identifiers, staff members in the Communications Office have provided a new look for the traditional logo that they hope catches attention.

“We have to have a visual identity that provides consistency. Without consistency, our messages won’t stand out among the more than three thousand messages our audiences receive every day,” John Veilleux, associate vice president for Communications and Community Relations, said. “A major key to building awareness is building familiarity. We want people to say, ‘Hey, that’s IUP!’ After reviewing our media products of the recent past, I see great opportunity to significantly improve our efforts in this area.”

Developed by Art Director Ronald Mabon and David Raymond, a 1999 graduate of IUP’s Art Department who recently joined the Communications Office staff, the new system of identity standards covers everything from recruitment materials, stationery, and business cards to various advertising media and apparel.

Mabon said the traditional IUP logo, which has served as a standard identifier for the university since 1986, has what the Communications staff believes to be a great deal of equity with alumni and student audiences, but alone it lacks character. The solution, he and Raymond agreed, was to add an element to it, informally called the wave, which gives it a more memorable quality and motion.

“The IUP logo still exists,” Raymond said. “Too many people identify with it to drop it, but it is so blocky—and vertical and static. Dropping it into a container as we have gives it a dynamic quality it lacked before.”

Raymond also developed a larger wave to employ as a design theme throughout entire communications pieces.

“It lends itself to limitless innovations,” he said. “This allows us to adapt the look and feel across the university in ways that give individual colleges an identity that is set apart from others, while still leveraging a single university identity.”

Another addition is the soaring hawk mark, designed to put the “beyond expectations” tagline into context.

“Whether you play sports or you participate in research or you do public service at IUP, you’re a hawk. We’re all hawks,” Veilleux said. “Many people across the campus community have expressed to me that the ‘beyond expectations’ tagline was vague. The addition of the soaring hawk with the tagline serving as a faux horizon provides a visual interpretation that clears up this ambiguity. That is good not only for our internal audiences, but our external audiences as well.”

Despite the addition of new elements, Veilleux said the family of marks developed last year with the introduction of a new mascot will not be retired. Rather, they are being reserved for the specific use of promoting IUP’s athletics program.

Veilleux said the entire graphic standards manual will be on line on the Office of Communications website by August 24 (select for the IUP Graphic Identity Standards Manual). To ensure the new and existing marks are used properly, a series of training workshops will be offered to those who design their own media products and advertisements for the Penn. The first workshop is scheduled for Thursday, September 18, at 9 a.m. in the Hadley Union Building Susquehanna Room.

He also said that supplies of stationery, envelopes, business cards, and other products should be depleted before offices and departments order new products with the new graphics. The IUP Printing Center has been given template designs for stationery products.

Inquiries about the workshop or about the graphic standards themselves may be sent to Stephanie Keppich, creative services manager, at communications-project@iup.edu.
