The annual Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. holiday is January 21, 2013. It is a time to reflect upon the teachings, work, and legacy of one of the nation’s heroes who worked for the betterment and improvement of all people.

Dr. King stated that “everybody can be great because everybody can serve.” Thus, Dr. King’s holiday is often noted as a “day on, not off,” and citizens are asked to involve themselves in a variety of volunteer community service activities.

This year, the U.S. President has named January 19, 2013, as the National Day of Service. Thus, service activities can be conducted on this day as well. Service should be more broadly defined, e.g., from participating in an educational workshop/performance to attending a dedication or tribute program; donating to the less fortunate; serving a few hours at a nonprofit, social improvement/development agency; and performing other acts of kindness.

Below are several events that will be going on in the Indiana community that will be available for your participation. Feel free to do so as your schedule permits.

The Indiana Department of Human Services collected school supplies/personal hygiene items to donate to a number of agencies from January 14–18, 2013, and will distribute the donations on MLK Day, January 21.

The Indiana NAACP will hosts its annual MLK Freedom March and Fellowship Celebration on Saturday, January 19. The march begins at 10:30 a.m. at the Indiana Courthouse and will proceed to Grace United Methodist Church for the fellowship program at (11:00 a.m. and lunch at noon. Free! All are welcome.

The African American Cultural Center at IUP (AACC) will display a Martin Luther King Jr. Black History Month exhibit in Stapleton Library entitled “African Americans and the United States: Embracing the Past, Building the Future,” opening on January 21 and concluding February 28. The exhibit can be seen daily during regular library hours on the first floor of Stapleton. Free!

The American Red Cross will host the Indiana Community Blood Drive on January 21 from 9:00 a.m. to 7:00 p.m. at the Rustic Lodge. Volunteers and blood donors are needed. Walk-ins are welcome, but the preference is to schedule an appointment in advance. To do so, contact the AACC at 724-357-2455. This event is the annual MLK Blood Drive and is cosponsored by the AACC, the IUP Women’s Club, the Indiana NAACP, and many other community agencies and businesses. Donations of food items are also needed.

All of the above events are free. For further information, please contact the AACC at 724-357-2455. Also, please let us know at the AACC if you participate in an activity during the MLK Holiday weekend. Thank you.

The 23rd annual Directions dinner and orientation for entering freshmen and diverse students took place at the African American Cultural Center on September 20, 2012. This year's theme was “Moving Diversity Consciousness Forward: What's RIGHT with this Picture?” Melvin Jenkins provided the keynote address, and President Michael Driscoll was among the honored guests and presented opening remarks.

<img title="President Michael Driscoll at Directions 2012" border="0" alt="President Michael Driscoll at Directions 2012" https://www.iup.edu:443/uploadedImages/Driscoll%20at%20Directions.jpg width="400" height="236" />
President Driscoll with members of various student organization at the AACC.
For at least 23 years, the African American Cultural Center has sponsored Directions, the annual welcoming program for entering diverse students. The program has expanded to include not only diverse graduate and undergraduate students, but also students of the Ujamaa Living-Learning, social-justice focused floor in Delaney Hall and transfer students from the Punxsutawney campus.

<img class="right-aligned-image" title="Naya McCrae, President Driscoll, and Nina Waters" border="0" alt="Naya McCrae, President Driscoll, and Nina Waters" align="right" https://www.iup.edu:443/uploadedImages/Driscoll%20and%20scholarship%20recipients.jpg width="224" height="145" />The program's overall purpose is to not only welcome these students to IUP, but to provide them with further information and opportunities that can serve as a "roadmap for success," with directions that could aid them when and if needed on their journey through college.

Photo, from left: Naya McCrae, President Driscoll, and Nina Waters

Student recipients of the $500 African American Alumni Scholarship for 2012 and 2013 were among the honored guests. Driscoll spoke with both students—Naya McCrae (2012) and Nina Waters (2013)—and was highly interactive and engaging throughout his visit at the program. Special thanks are extended to all who attended and helped to make the program possible.

During his visit, Driscolll engaged in a lively, informal talk with the students, providing them with an opportunity to get to know him as a person and to address questions they may have had, including their perception of what they felt is needed but missing from the Center. For many of the students, this was probably the first time they had an opportunity to even meet and interact with a college president, especially on a level at which they could relate. Needless to say, Driscoll's visit to the Center was well received, and we are thankful for his taking time out of his buy schedule to tour the AACC and meet, greet, and interact with the students.

On October 5, 2012, during the IUP Homecoming weekend, five alumni who founded the African American Alumni Scholarship returned to campus and attended the African American Cultural Center annual Homecoming Cultural Enrichment Night at Cozumel Mexican Restaurant, featuring Mexican cuisine and a salsa dance contest.

The men, members of the group known as “The Players,” included Donald Howe ’79, Mike Higgins ’80, Claud Epps ’80, Jamie Wallace ’80, and Jamie Wallace ’82. Prior to this event, on October 4, they toured the AACC office and talked informally with several students. At the restaurant, they were joined by another alumnus, Aaron Princes ’08 and ’09.

<img title="The Players at Homecoming 2012" border="0" alt="The Players at Homecoming 2012" https://www.iup.edu:443/uploadedImages/AACC-Players-20121.jpg width="400" height="213" />
From left: Steve Whiting ’82; Jamie Wallace ’80; Carolyn Princes, associate dean of Students for Multicultural Affairs/director; Naya Mcrae, 2012 African American Alumni Scholarship Recipient; Claude Epps ’80; Mike Higgins ’80; and Donald Howe ’79 (missing, 2013 recipient Nina Waters)

As a panel, each alumnus introduced themselves and provided words of wisdom and encouragement to the students in attendance. They all fully participated in the Cozumel program, including the salsa dance contest. One member of the “Players” group was recipient of the first place prize for the salsa dance contest, and the alumnus presented the entire winnings to his undergraduate partner.

The alumni also had an opportunity to meet and greet the 2012 IUP recipient of the $500 African American Alumni Scholarship, Naya McCrae. Unfortunately, invited guest and 2013 recipient Nina Waters was unable to attend the event. The overall program provided students with an opportunity to interact with people from the university and local community of different racial/ethnic and social backgrounds in a culturally-enriching and pleasant environment.

It was quite apparent to the 32 persons in attendance that the objectives of Cultural Enrichment Night were met, and the event was an overall success. It received a rating of 4.86 out of a possible score of 5.00. On behalf of IUP and its students, the 2012 scholarship recipient presented the alumni with a small token of appreciation for their work and support of students.

The “Players” also attended the Crimson Huddle and met with many people, including the new president of IUP, Michael Driscoll, and attended the football game.

The African American Cultural Center extends special thanks to the African American alumni for their support and for helping to make AACC Homecoming activities at Cozumel successful.

Jimbo and the Soupbones is “a band that can make you happy.” A musical consortium of funk, rock and soulful emotions, James “Jimbo” Jackson, with charisma to spare, is the quintessential frontman. Everything about Jimbo is big, including his body, voice, and, most actively, his stage presence. He is the band’s songwriter “who lets no lyrical rules govern,” as tragic and often humorous stories and songs are written with specific intentions.

All who attends his performance should be inspired and leave with a feeling of jubilence.

The Help is a current film that involves “a story of divisions, mostly in terms of race, but also, of divisions in regards to class and of gender, and not just abuse against African American maids in the 60s-era of Mississippi.” The film reminds us “of how far we’ve come, how far we still have to go, and how even with a meager attempt to reach out, any slight intention to create a community among all people indicates that there is hope for a better world.” Besides being “a “family-friendly, Walt Disney version of what went on in places like Jackson, Mississippi during the turbulent sixties civil-rights era, elevated by a trio of strong performances by several actresses playing the maids,” The Help is an entertaining film which also suggests that “higher stakes are at play and makes the film worth watching.” Its message “...is vital to our humanity.”

Showings of The Help will occur over three days as follows:

Thursday, October 27, 7:00 p.m., G5 Delaney Hall

Friday, October 28, 5:00 p.m., Pratt Auditorium

The collection drive benefits the Indiana County Back to School Bash, to be held on August 20 from 9:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m. in the 600 block of Church Street in Indiana, Pa.

Collection/donation boxes will be placed in the atrium area of Delaney Hall on the IUP campus (next to the AACC office), as well as in the AACC office itself.

If you are interested in contributing to the Indiana County Back to School Bash, please bring your donation(s) to the AACC by August 10 and drop them in the collection/donation box.

The items needed are for children from kindergarten to grade twelve. These include pens, pencils, notebooks, weekly planners, glue sticks, pocket dictionaries, backpacks, new or gently used clothing, and so on. Money donations and volunteers are also needed. Anything you can donate will be appreciated.

The Indiana County Back to School Bash is an initiative of the faith-based and community organizations that provide low-income children in Indiana County with resources for the start of the school year. Last year, the organization assisted over one thousand children. IUP made a huge contribution last year, and we hope to do the same this year, as many children in the county are in need of additonal support to obtain necessary items for back-to-school.

IUP’s participation in the collection/donation drive provides another opportunity for us to give back to the community.

All items collected and/or donated by IUP AACC will be delivered to the event sponsors on Wednesday, August 10.

For more information, or for a listing of other specific items, please feel free to contact the IUP AACC Office at 724-357-2455.

Author, English professor, and griot/storyteller Carmen Gillespie will be the featured presenter at the annual Juneteenth Celebration on Wednesday, June 15, 2011, from 5:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. at the Chevy Chase Community Center.

The Juneteenth Celebration is sponsored by the Chevy Chase Community Center, IUP’s African American Cultural Center (AACC), and the Indiana County NAACP. Juneteenth is the oldest nationally celebrated commemoration of the ending of slavery in the United States.

All are invited to this special event, and everyone is asked to bring a covered dish to share. The event is free and open to the public.

From its oriigin in Galveston, Texas, in 1865, the observance of Juneteenth as the African American Emancipation Day has spread across the United States and beyond.

Today, Juneteenth commemorates African American freedom and emphasizes education and achievement. It is a day, a week, and in some areas a month marked with celebrations, guest speakers, picnics and family gatherings. It is a time for reflection and rejoicing. It is a time for assessment, for self-improvement, and for planning the future. Its growing popularity signifies a level of maturity and dignity in America long overdue. In cities across the country, people of all races, nationalities, and religions are joining hands to truthfully acknowledge a period in our history that shaped and continues to influence our society. Sensitized to the conditions and experiences of others, only then can we make significant and lasting improvements in our society.

For further information on Wednesday’s Juneteenth Celebration, please contact the AACC at 724-357-2455 or the Chevy Chase Community Center at 724-463-0674. Please come and enjoy this annual event. You are bound to have a great time! All are welcome!
