  <content:encoded><![CDATA[<p class="introduction">The <a title="Center for Counselor Training Services" href="https://www.iup.edu:443/WorkArea/linkit.aspx?LinkIdentifier=id&amp;ItemID=30305">IUP Center for Counselor Training and Services</a> (CCTS) will offer a workshop on self-injurious behaviors as the first of its Fall 2009 professional development series. The one-day workshop will be delivered by two noted experts in the field, Ms. Kim Poling and Dr. Tina Goldstein, and will be held at the CCAC-Boyce Campus Performance Auditorium on Friday, November 13, 2009, in Monroeville.</p>
<p>Ms. Poling serves as the clinical manager of the Services for Teens at Risk (STAR-Center), a specialty program for suicidal adolescents and a division of the Child and Adolescent Psychiatry Program of Western Psychiatric Institute and Clinic, University of Pittsburgh Medical Center. Dr. Goldstein is a licensed psychologist and assistant professor in Child and Adolescent Psychiatry at the University of Pittsburgh, School of Medicine.</p>
<p>The one-day program entitled, “Helping Teens and Families Manage Self-Injurious Behaviors,” is designed for mental health professionals, school counselors, college educators, and students.</p>
<p>This workshop will cover such items as distinguishing suicidal behavior from self-injurious behavior, identifying the motivations behind self-injurious behavior, and how to aid families of children who self-injure.</p>
<p>The workshop is coordinated by the Center for Counselor Training and Services, an IUP center that offers professional workshops and training for community and school counselors and other mental health professionals throughout the region. The center is directed by Dr. John McCarthy, professor in the <a title="Counseling" href="https://www.iup.edu:443/WorkArea/linkit.aspx?LinkIdentifier=id&amp;ItemID=10177">Department of Counseling</a>.</p>

  <title>McCarthy Selected for International Academic Fellowship Program</title>

  <content:encoded><![CDATA[<p class="introduction">John McCarthy, professor in the <a title="Counseling" href="https://www.iup.edu:443/WorkArea/linkit.aspx?LinkIdentifier=id&amp;ItemID=10177">Department of Counseling</a>, has been selected to participate in the International Academic Fellowship Program (AFP) in the Higher Education Support Program (HESP) of the Open Society Institute for the 2009-2010 academic year.</p>
<p>The International Scholars Fellowship Program brings highly qualified scholars from around the world to serve as experts and consultants, facilitating processes of individual academic and professional development of AFP Returning Scholars and non-AFP local faculty, as well as processes of curriculum and research reforms at AFP partner departments in the region. International Scholars also collaborate with the host institution on the development of new courses and encourage the development of skills critical to academic work.</p>
<p>The program was launched in 2004 to support and guide higher education reform in South Eastern Europe, the former Soviet Union (excluding the Baltic states), and Mongolia.</p>
<p>In this capacity, Dr. McCarthy will be consulting with the Applied Psychology Program of Yerevan State University (YSU), an institution of approximately nine thousand students in the capital city of Yerevan, Armenia. In addition to visits to YSU, he will be attending HESP Discipline Group meetings in the Ukraine and Turkey throughout the year.</p>
<p>This will be the fifth year that YSU has participated in this program. Past fellows have been from such institutions as the University of Georgia (USA), Vienna University (Austria), and Mediterranean University (France).</p>]]></content:encoded>

  <content:encoded><![CDATA[<p class="introduction">Indiana University of Pennsylvania’s Center for Counselor Training and Services will present a workshop May 8 on autism.<br />
The one-day event, Autism: From Research to Clinical Practice, will be offered at IUP’s Eberly Auditorium by Dr. Antonio Hardan.</p>
<p>Hardan is an assistant professor of psychiatry at the Stanford University Medical Center and is the director of the Autism and Developmental Disorders Clinic. His work was the recent feature on the cover page of <em>Clinical Psychiatry News</em>, and he has extensive clinical and research experience in the field of developmental disabilities including autism.</p>
<p>Hardan has completed research investigations in several areas, including the neurobiology of autism and pharmacological treatments. His work has been published in journals, including the <em>American Journal of Psychiatry</em> and the <em>Journal of the American Academy of Child and Adolescent Psychiatry</em>.</p>
<p>He completed his doctoral training at Saint Joseph University School of Medicine and Dentistry in Lebanon and internships in Lebanon, France, and Washington, D.C. His general psychiatric residency was completed at the University of Rochester School of Medicine and Dentistry. He concluded his child and adolescent psychiatry training at the University Health Center of Pittsburgh, Western Psychiatric Institute and Clinic.</p>
<p>The workshop will cover assessment and diagnosis; psychology and neurobiology; cognitive, behavioral, and psychosocial interventions; and pharmacological and alternative treatments.</p>
<p>The IUP Center for Counselor Training and Services offers professional workshops and training for community and school counselors and other mental health professionals throughout the region. She spoke to an audience of health professionals and parents on strengthening couples’ relationships while raising chidlren with serious illnesses or disabilities. She also presented “Disability in a Family Context” to the Ann Arbor Center for Independent Living. In addition, she spoke to a support group for parents of chidlren with disabilities at the Midland JCC in New Jersey. Most recently, she spoke on sustaining a healthy marriage while raising children on the spectrum at the National Autism Conference in Fort Lauderdale, Florida.</p>]]></content:encoded>

  <description><![CDATA[<p>The Center for Counselor Training and Services is offering area mental health professionals and students two workshops focusing on counseling supervision and ethical and legal issues in counseling.</p>]]></description>

  <content:encoded><![CDATA[<p class="introduction">The <a title="Center for Counselor Training Services" href="https://www.iup.edu:443/WorkArea/linkit.aspx?LinkIdentifier=id&amp;ItemID=30305">IUP Center for Counselor Training and Services</a> is offering two workshops for area mental health professionals and students.</p>
<p>The seminars focus on counseling supervision as well as ethical and legal issues in counseling.</p>
<p>“Counseling Supervision: Strategies and Applications” will be offered Oct. 31 at the Indiana Holiday Inn. Dr. Kirsten Murray, assistant professor of counseling at IUP, will present techniques for professionals supervising counseling trainees.</p>
<p>Murray completed her doctoral degree in counselor education and counseling, majoring in couple, marital and family counseling at Idaho State University. She has been at IUP since 2007.</p>
<p>Her experiences include play therapy as well as family, couple and group counseling to a variety of populations that include group home residents and families affected by sexual abuse. Murray has supervised a wide range of counselors-in-training at various developmental levels, utilizing individual, group, triadic and live supervision modalities to implement supervision strategies. She has also conducted multiple trainings on supervision practices for school and community-based counselors.</p>
<p>“A Refresher on Ethical Issues for Counselors” will be offered by Dr. Nadene L’Amoreaux, associate professor in the IUP department of counseling, at the Lamplighter Restaurant in Delmont on Dec. 5.</p>
<p>This three-hour workshop has been approved by the Pennsylvania State Board of Social Workers, Marriage and Family Therapists and Professional Counselors and meets the continuing education requirement for training in ethical issues for licensed professional counselors and 2009 renewals. In this seminar, L’Amoreaux will cover the updated code of ethics of the American Counseling Association.</p>
<p>L’Amoreaux has been at IUP since 1999 and teaches courses on ethical and legal issues in the counseling profession. She is a licensed professional counselor and an approved clinical supervisor. L’Amoreaux also has experience in working with adolescents, couples and families as well as with children in a partial hospitalization program.</p>

  <content:encoded><![CDATA[<p><a title="Dr. Holly Branthoover" href="https://www.iup.edu:443/WorkArea/linkit.aspx?LinkIdentifier=id&amp;ItemID=30233">Dr. Holly Branthoover</a>, assistant professor of <a title="Counseling" href="https://www.iup.edu:443/WorkArea/linkit.aspx?LinkIdentifier=id&amp;ItemID=10177">counseling</a> at Indiana University of Pennsylvania, was elected president-elect of the Pennsylvania Counseling Association. She assumed this role July 1, 2008, and will begin her term as president of the association on July 1, 2009.</p>
<p>PCA is the state professional association affiliated with the American Counseling Association, a 600-member national organization that promotes the growth of the counseling profession.</p>
<p>Branthoover joined the IUP faculty in 2004. She is a nationally certified counselor and a licensed professional counselor in the commonwealth. She serves as the practicum coordinator in the <a title="Counseling" href="https://www.iup.edu:443/WorkArea/linkit.aspx?LinkIdentifier=id&amp;ItemID=10177">IUP Department of Counseling</a> and is an associate in a private counseling practice in Pittsburgh.</p>
<p>Branthoover also volunteers for the American Red Cross Disaster Action Team. She has a Master of Science degree in community counseling, and a school counseling certificate and doctoral degree in counselor education from Duquesne University.</p>]]></content:encoded>
