<img style="WIDTH: 146px; HEIGHT: 192px" class="right-aligned-image" title="Nicole Dann-Payne at the Pittsburgh marathon" alt="Nicole Dann-Payne at the Pittsburgh marathon" align="right" https://www.iup.edu:443/uploadedImages/Units/F/Food_and_Nutrition/News/Nicole%20marathon271.jpeg width="146" height="192" />Congratulations to Nicole Dann-Payne, a Department of Food and Nutrition faculty member, who placed eight overall for the women in the 2013 Pittsburgh Marathon, which took place on Sunday, May 5. Her finish time was 3:05:44. Not bad considering this was her first marathon ever!

Dann-Payne has run half-marathons three times; twice in Pittsburgh. She absolutely loves the Pittsburgh Marathon. “The city was alive and electric, with all of the distinct neighborhoods coming out of their homes and on to the streets to volunteer and cheer you on!” she said. “It was so great seeing different organizations and churches along the route out singing, dancing, cheering, and even supplying additional water and fruit to runners!”

It was a shock to learn from a spectator with about three miles to go that she was in eighth place! “I could not believe it! I had so much fun, giving so many spectators high fives, singing along to songs bands along the course were playing, and feeling the incredible support from spectators who would yell ‘you go girl!’. The energy was indescribable, so positive and electric!”

In addition to teaching in the Department of Food and Nutrition, Dann-Payne coaches track and cross country at Marion Center Area High School.

On Saturday, students will be collecting donations in Indiana at Giant Eagle, Wal-Mart, Valeski's Bi-Lo, and Big Lots; in Homer City at Mercki's Bi-Lo; in Clymer at Tate's Supermarket; in Saltsburg at Shop 'n Save; and at all four Indiana County McDonalds.

Remember: a $1 donation provides ICCAP with funds to purchase 10 pounds of food!

Are you confused about the food choices on campus? Have you ever thought, “What is a healthful diet?” Well, get connected with Nutrition Connections, a free Nutrition Counseling Service, sponsored by the Department of Food and Nutrition, located in the Center for Health and Well-Being.

Some of the services provided are individual counseling with a peer nutrition counselor, analysis of your current diet, help with finding ways to eat a healthful diet while at college, and weight management counseling. Each academic year, Nutrition Connections helps around 300 students on the IUP main campus. Students who received the service have indicated a positive experience: “My counselor was great, she helped me with finding options in the dining hall,” and “I have a hard time sticking with a diet, but he made me see eating healthy is for a lifetime, not a diet.”

If you would like to make an appointment, e-mail the director, Nicole Clark, RD, LDN, CDE, at nclark@iup.edu. Services are provided during Fall and Spring semesters only.
