He served as a graduate assistant in the Communications Media Department this year, working with Louis Almeida on a number of projects. His performance and overall coproduction quality was spectacular. In fact, his work with one of the grants was so stellar that the grant’s president said, “I love the design of the booklet and the messages. It’s very cool to see this. We can adopt it as it is.”

Having a coproduction accepted by a national-level grantee is, in itself, worthy of praise. It was also a prime application of instructional design for a real-world client, and was one of the very best designs to come out of the AECT program.

At the IUP Graduate Scholars Forum on April 6, 2011, graduate students Bill Gasior and Brenton Kelly won for the virtual tour they created for the Communications Media Department.

In the Fall semester of 2009, Dr. Kurt Dudt, the Communications Media Department chair, discovered the need for constructing a virtual tour for the department. In order to gain a competitive edge and to satisfy the increased need for online promotional materials, he asked Gasior, an Adult Education and Communications Technology master’s graduate assistant at the time, and Kelly, a Communications Media undergraduate at the time, to come together and take on the task of creating the first ever Communications Media Virtual Tour.

When Gasior and Kelly began constructing the virtual tour, they realized that it must encompass and showcase all the unique aspects that the Communications Media Department had to offer. It also had to provide information about the department’s faculty, students, degrees, and resources using a combination of different forms of media. They accomplished this with three overall goals for the website:

To make the site as interactive as possible

To create some novelty appeal within the site

To make a site that could be used as a promotional tool for potential students to use

The final product was not only a hit within the Communications Media Department, but it proved to be a huge promotional success and even attracted attention from other departments within Indiana University of Pennsylvania.

Having accomplished such a huge task for the Communications Media Department, Gasior felt it more than necessary to enter the Communications Media Virtual Tour into the first Graduate Scholars Forum at IUP. On April 6, 2011, Gasior and Kelly presented their product during the open forum and, much to their delight, won best-in-show honors from the College of Education and Educational Technology. They each were awarded $500 in travel funds from IUP to support their participation in a conference, forum, or other professional development experience.

Much time, hard work, and dedication paid off, not only for Gasior and Kelly, but for the Communications Media Department as well.

<img class="right-aligned-image" title="Mahler 1" border="0" alt="Mahler 1" https://www.iup.edu:443/uploadedImages/Units/A_-_Ak/Adult_and_Community_Education/News/Mahler_new(1).jpg width="161" height="200" />Margaret Mahler—Peg to her family and friends—is best remembered as a warm and caring person who really did put others ahead of herself. She set high standards, traveled far, and accomplished a great deal in her life, and that’s what made her unexpected death in 1992 so tragic.

Born in Pittsburgh in 1923, Margaret grew up in a large family, then married and had five children of her own. While raising a family with her husband, Al, Margaret graduated from Duquesne University in 1962 with a B.Ed. in English Literature and taught in the Pittsburgh public schools for ten years. She received her M.Ed. in 1971 and a Ph.D. in 1974, both from the University of Pittsburgh, then began teaching at IUP in 1976.

In the classroom, Margaret was considered a master teacher by those who had the privilege of learning from and with her. Her respect for other people and her love of teaching were basic in her nature and constant in her interactions with others. She exemplified the model teacher and continuously strived to better herself, the community, and others.

Her academic and interpersonal skills were many and noteworthy, as were her accomplishments outside the classroom. Margaret established the IUP Center for Community Education in 1976. As director, she ensured that the center provided training and technical assistance to hundreds of educators throughout Pennsylvania. Margaret also served on several state boards and committees and was active in numerous professional organizations. She was a volunteer for the American Association for Adult and Continuing Education (AAACE) and served two terms as president of the Pennsylvania Community Education Association.

She also took a sabbatical to work at the International Community Education Center in Coventry, England, and at a community college in Djakarta, Indonesia.

When Margaret wasn’t championing a cause, she was often making presentations, which totaled more than twenty at the local, state, and national levels. She also authored chapters for the 1981 and 1987 Pennsylvania Handbook of Adult Education.

So that we are reminded of her diligence, professionalism, and her personalized approach to teaching, Indiana University of Pennsylvania has established the Margaret Mahler Fund to commemorate her approach to life and academic accomplishments. It provides funds to support student activities and recognition of student achievement in the Adult and Community Education program at IUP—something Margaret would have loved very much.

Contributions to the Margaret Mahler Fund can be made by returning the attached downloadable form with a check or money order (please mark the memo portion of your check: Fund #4657, Mahler Fund).
