As the executive director of the IUP Alumni Association (center), I work closely with the IUP Alumni Association Board of Directors to guide the association’s strategic plan. In addition, I work with IUP on the Road events and reunions. I graduated from IUP with a bachelor’s and master’s degree in marketing and marketing education, and I have been with the IUP Alumni Association for twenty years.

Homecoming planning meetings will cover topics of floats, activities, and participation in the 2009 Homecoming Parade. Additional meetings are scheduled for September 16, 23, 30, and October 7, all at 4:00 p.m. in the HUB Susquehanna Room.

The theme for the 2009 parade is “Our Global Community: Cities from Around the World.” The 2008 parade contained more than seventy-five units of marching bands, floats, cars, and walking units, all of which are welcome back for this year. The 2009 Homecoming Parade will begin at 10:00 a.m. on October 10, 2009.

IUP Alumni Connections supports Facebook Connect! When you register at IUP Alumni Connections, you can choose to authenticate between Facebook and the IUP on-line community.

Once the authentication is successful, your accounts are “connected.” You can then login with either your community or your Facebook username and password in the future.

Using the Facebook Connect feature will also allow you to use the Facebook News Feeds. When you register for an IUP event or make an on-line donation these actions can appear as social actions on Facebook. Both the event and hosting site are hyperlinked from Facebook back to IUP Alumni Connections. Soon your IUP friends will be registering for the same events you are attending!

“The IUP Alumni Association worked with IUP alumnus John Simpson ’79, the event and marketing manager for the Pittsburgh Steelers, to sponsor a picnic and an opportunity to spend the afternoon together enjoying the Steelers’ practice session,” reported Mary Jo Lyttle ’86, M’89, executive director of the IUP Alumni Association. Jim Wansac ’94, vice president of the IUP Alumni Association Board of Directors, was on hand to meet alumni and talk about the university.

Lyttle said, “At the picnic, John Simpson surprised our group with some special prizes—we were able to award VIP wrist bands to about twenty attendees to get special field access during practice and get autographs by two players after practice. A special treat for those with VIP access was to meet IUP standout Jason Cappizzi, who was picked up by the Steelers for their offensive line in 2007.”

Join alumni host committee members Jack Frank '58, Ryan Renz ’05, Patti Klausing Simmons '72, and Robert Vargo '50 along with Alumni Relations staff for entertaining company, Norm the Crimson Hawk, and excellent food!

IUP faculty, staff, alumni, and friends gathered Sunday, July 26, 2009, for IUP’s second annual IUP Day at Kennywood Park.

IUP family members had the opportunity to reunite with friends while enjoying an ice cream bar and the chance to win a variety of IUP memorabilia.

The highlight of this year’s Ice Cream Social celebration was when Dr. Alida Merlo, a faculty member in IUP’s Criminology Department, won a Pittsburgh Steelers jersey autographed by Santonio Holmes and raffled off by the IUP Alumni Association.

Check-in is at noon, and the shotgun start is at 1:00 p.m.

The $30 entry fee includes the cart, dinner, drinks, and prizes. Dinner only is $15. Catered by Aramark, dinner will be held at College Lodge.

Mulligans are for sale at check-in; proceeds benefit the IUP Golf Team.

Please note: Meadow Lane non-members must pay an $18 green fee the day of the event.

As the six-time Super Bowl champion Pittsburgh Steelers embark on their forty-third consecutive Steelers Training Camp at Saint Vincent College in Latrobe, the IUP Alumni Association encourages you to be a part of the action!

All members of the university community—employees, families, students, and alumni—are invited to the Steelers Pre-practice Picnic, scheduled for Sunday, August 2, 2009, at Placid Hall.

The Steelers picnic includes hamburgers, hot dogs, baked beans, corn on the cob, fresh vegetable trays with dip, fresh fruit and pasta salads, cookies and brownies for dessert, iced tea, and lemonade for only $15 per person!

Steelers memorabilia and VIP viewing access for practice will be raffled off at the picnic. Once the picnic is over, travel to the “Hill” to watch the Steelers take the field with the IUP family.

Breda Cody Kellner (’89) announced plans for alumni of Alpha Gamma Delta to reunite at the upcoming Homecoming activities. Alumni are encouraged to meet at the Homecoming Crimson Huddle Pre-game Tent Party and at the Fifth Quarter Celebration.

Alpha Omicron Pi (Gamma Beta Chapter)

The chapter was commended in 1966 with its first pledge class and was active on campus through the early 1990s. Although the chapter is no longer on campus, all sisters of Gamma Beta and any alumnae of other AOII chapters living in the Indiana area are welcome to join the planned gatherings.

Patti Klausing Simmons (’72) and Lisa Andrus (’97) announced plans for the annual Alpha Sigma Tau Homecoming reunion. Be sure to join members at the Pre-game Tent Party and Fifth Quarter Celebration.

Kappa Delta

Suzy Kuhn Teele (’82)  announced plans for alumni of Kappa Delta to reunite at the upcoming Homecoming activities. Alumni are encouraged to meet at the Homecoming Pre-game Tent Party  and the Fifth Quarter Celebration. No reservation is required—just plan to check in at the registration table at both events and find the area reserved for Kappa Delta.

Kappa Sigma

Oliver Nassry (’89) encourages brothers of Kappa Sigma to participate in the annual reunion activities planned for Homecoming. Reserved tables are secured at both the Homecoming Pre-game Tent Party and the Fifth Quarter Celebration. 

Phi Sigma Kappa

Ed Dalesandro (’78) and Craig Cox (’79) have announced plans for the annual Phi Sigma Kappa Homecoming Reunion. The reunion begins with a Friday night welcome reception at the Holiday Inn Courtyard, then continues with the Homecoming Pre-game Tent Party and Fifth Quarter Celebration on Saturday.

Sigma Phi Epsilon

After the success of the 2007 Homecoming Reunion, Mark Anthony, former advisor to Sigma Phi Epsilon, announced plans to reunite again in 2008. Alumni are encouraged to meet at both the Homecoming Pre-game Tent Party and at the Fifth Quarter Celebration.

Sigma Tau Gamma

Plans are set for the annual Homecoming reunion for the brothers of Sigma Tau Gamma.

Ken Sosnick (’03) announced that activities will start on Friday night and continue through Saturday. On Friday, a celebration for Jack Balderson (’58)—recently inducted into the Society of Seventeen—will be held at the Train Station Restaurant in Indiana. Drinks are at 6:00 p.m. and dinner reservations are at 8:00 p.m. On Saturday, alumni can meet at the Homecoming Pre-game Tent Party and the Fifth Quarter Celebration.

The parade route will again begin at 13th and Philadelphia streets and conclude in the Oak Grove. Immediately following the parade, regional area marching bands will gather and perform as part of the Pre-Game in the Oak Grove Festival. The deadline to declare parade participation is September 29, 2008. If you or your office/organization are interested in being part of the 2008 Homecoming Parade (themed “Classic Cartoons”), please contact Rick Kutz or Sam Mucken through the Personnel section.

In addition to the Homecoming Parade and Pre-Game in the Oak Grove Festival (both starting at 10:00 a.m.), the Homecoming football game kicking off at 3:35 p.m., and the Homecoming Ball at 8:00 p.m., the Co-Op Store is offering expanded hours as well.

The Co-Op Store will be open between 8:00 a.m. and 5:00 p.m. on Saturday, October 4, 2008. Official, licensed IUP apparel featuring IUP athletics, the Crimson Hawk, and official IUP logo will be available for purchase along with a wide variety of other items. IUP is once again proud to have the Student Cooperative Association and the Co-Op Store as campus partners in the Homecoming celebration!

The parade begins at 10:00 a.m. and ends in the Oak Grove, where a celebration starts at 11:00. Catch the football game against Slippery Rock at 2:30 p.m., then slip into formal wear for the Homecoming Ball. Contact the University Events office, at 724-357-2145, to reserve your spot at the ball.
