As of August 17, 2011, five IUP Research Institute Business and Technology Group employees became certified Project Management Professionals.

A credential offered through the Project Management Institute, PMP certification is one of the most distinguished certifications for project managers. It is a globally recognized and demanded industry commodity and is quickly becoming the gold standard within the world of federal contracting. The PMP credential demonstrates that individuals have the experience, education, and competency to successfully lead and direct projects.

“With great power comes great responsibility.”

Nothing quite describes the future of the IUP Research Institute Business and Technology Group (BTG) better than this renowned quotation by Spiderman comic book figure Ben Harper.

Beginning its second year as a subsidiary for-profit company of the IUP Research Institute, BTG has already established itself among the ranks of business and government contracting mega-houses like Lockheed Martin and Northrup Grumman. Building a reputation based on expert quality services and workmanship, BTG’s exemplary record has garnered recognition throughout both the technological and business worlds. And now, as BTG looks ahead to its expanding clientele base and numerous promising endeavors just on the horizon, BTG is feeling the echo of Harper’s words.

However, despite the flood of new and exciting responsibilities, BTG is more than ready to exceed the demands and challenges that often accompany success. As of August 17, 2011, five BTG employees became certified project management professionals (PMPs).

To obtain certification, Rebecca Zukowski, Pat Higgins, Brian Petersen, Robert Kimmel, and Keith Bauder had to meet rigorous requirements of past project management experience and formal project management education. After meeting these requirements, each then had to put their skills to the test and pass the PMP certification exam.

While the process required numerous hours of study and preparation from each BTG employee, all agree that the benefits the certification will bring to BTG’s mission were well worth the effort.

“The PMP confirms that our existing project management procedures meet industry standards while also providing additional insight on best practices,” said Kimmel. “It offered us a new way to look at and approach situations.”

“This credential will be key to us keeping our current government clients,” added BTG CEO Zukowski, “and it will certainly be key to winning new clients.”

Yet, it is important to note that, while the company looks toward greater growth and prominence with an array of government and industry contracts, BTG is also positioned to support IUP faculty by providing services that can strengthen their research proposals and support the sustainability of their projects and funding. BTG’s long-range goal is to provide sustainable business opportunities, jobs, and formal internships with IUP students while supporting the research enterprise at IUP. Working hand in hand with faculty in support of this vision is one method to achieve this goal.

IUP Research Institute Business and Technology Group, Inc., (BTG) came ready and willing to meet the nation’s demand for improvement of technological interoperability at this year’s Coalition Warrior Interoperability Demonstration (CWID).

Held in five locations around the U.S. and involving more than twenty global coalition partners, CWID is an annual event that examines the latest information technology aimed at enabling swifter communication among disparate systems, reducing risk, and preventing operational shortfalls during an emergency situation.

As one of the organizations invited to participate in this years CWID, BTG traveled to the demonstration site at the DHS National Operations Center Battle Lab in Herndon, Virginia, to showcase the capabilities of CIMS (Civil Support Team Incident Management System). The system, which was originally developed for National Guard Civil Support Teams, was designed with digital battle board capabilities. Facilitating the sharing of critical data across disparate systems and providing a common operating picture, CIMS arms responders with critical information crucial in helping to successfully mitigate emergency situations. Targeting such clear, rapid interoperability technology and applying it to the national level is the aim of CWID.

This year’s interoperability demonstrations took place from June 6–16. Over the course of this eleven-day period, participating technologies underwent a series of interoperability trials—exercises that place them in several operational-inspired scenarios to assess how each would perform in the event of emergencies involving floods, weapons of mass destruction, hazardous materials, oil spills, etc.

In preparation for the trials, Patrick Higgins, a BTG project manager, and Calvin Wilson, a senior at Indiana University of Pennsylvania and an intern with BTG, traveled to Virginia the week prior to testing to instruct National Guard soldiers on how to operate CIMS. They returned Monday, June 13, to survey CIMS’s first day of testing.

“Different officials from the Department of Homeland Security were very pleased with what they saw,” Higgins said, regarding the first day’s demonstration of CIMS. “They were impressed by how quickly and clearly CIMS could pass information between both civilian and other military systems.”

Wilson was also extremely pleased with CIMS’s performance during the demonstrations. “Participating in CWID has been a great experience for both CIMS and myself,” Wilson said. “And I feel that we made a significant contribution to CWID as well.”

However, BTG’s participation in CWID is due in large part to the Keystone Innovation Zone (KIZ) MicroGrant program.

Created with companies like BTG in mind, the KIZ MicroGrant Program was established to not only assist Keystone Opportunity Zone companies in the “commercialization of a product or innovative technology, to test the feasibility of a technology or product, or to assist a company in completing a milestone project that will directly help catalyze the growth of the company,” but also to provide opportunities to students at participating colleges and universities. By awarding the grant to BTG, the KIZ program accomplished all four objectives.

“With funds from the KIZ MicroGrant, we were able to further develop CIMS’s capabilities so that it would meet the compatibility standards of the Integrated Public Alert and Warning System (IPAWS)–Open Platform for Emergency Networks (OPEN),” said Higgins. “It took several months, but we were able to integrate the functionality and that earned us a seat at CWID.”

During the demonstrations, CIMS drew attention for its success in enabling swift communication among disparate systems.

“The bottom line is that in an emergency, different systems are coming together and they need a common operating picture. They need to be able to pass data between different personnel so that officials can make decisions,” Higgins said. “And that is what CIMS provides. It creates a way to get to the solution.”

Basic Research on Self-Regulation (R21) Deadline: January 6, 2011

Scientific Meetings for Creating Interdisciplinary Research Teams in Emerging Basic Behavioral and Social Science Research (R13) Deadline: December 14, 2010

If you are interested in pursuing any of these funding opportunities, please contact the IUP Research Institute at 724-357-2223 to speak with the project development officer assigned to your college or department.

Abeles reported that about 10 percent of NIH’s overall budget is currently spent on BSS research. Individual institutes’ percentages vary, with the National Institute of Nursing Research spending almost 80 percent of its extramural budget on BSS research, while the National Institute of Mental Health, once the lead NIH institute supporting BSS research, decreased its emphasis on this type of research. Contact Abeles at ronald_abeles@nih.gov for additional information.
