Dr. Tony Atwater, president of Indiana University of Pennsylvania, announced today that the university has received a $1-million gift from Edward K. Bratton, of Indiana, for the Kovalchick Convention and Athletic Complex.

Construction on the Kovalchick Convention and Athletic Complex began February 16, and thanks to the diligence and hard work of those who wear hard hats, the region will celebrate completion in 2011, 850 days from when the dirt started flying.

Mascaro Construction Company, LP, of Pittsburgh, is the project’s general contractor; Farfield Company of Lititz will provide the mechanical and electrical construction; and S.P. McCarl, Inc. of Altoona will install the plumbing. L. Robert Kimball of Ebensburg is the professional architect.

Each contractor was selected in December after a competitive bid process. The project is being administered by the Pennsylvania Department of General Services. James P. Creedon is the secretary of General Services.

Kovalchick Convention and Athletic Complex Construction Bids Awarded; Lab Funded

Pennsylvania Department of General Services Secretary James P. Creedon and Indiana University of Pennsylvania President Tony Atwater recently announced that bid proposals have been awarded for the construction of the Kovalchick Convention and Athletic Complex. Bids for the project initially came in at $56.9 million. The new base bids are at $53.49 million.

“We are delighted to announce that this project will move forward, thanks to a concerted effort by all parties to work together to find ways to make this important project a reality,” Creedon said.

Creedon said that as a result of extensive negotiations with IUP, contractors, and the design professional, the project went through a value-engineering process that enabled the project cost to be decreased by almost $4 million.

“Through an informed and collaborative process, IUP and DGS have been successful in reaching an agreement that maintains the scope and quality of the project, and at a project cost compatible with the university’s fundraising objectives,” Atwater said. “We have had a stated fundraising goal of $20 million. We knew that we would have to increase this goal, and given today’s announcement, we are officially increasing our goal to $38 million." » See more.

In other news, Edison International authorized a grant of $250,000 for construction of a laboratory in the John P. Murtha Institute for Homeland Security, which will be housed in the KCAC. » See more.

The complex, slated to open in 2011, will be situated along Wayne Avenue.

As a reminder to members of the IUP and Indiana communities, IUP will formally break ground for the Kovalchick Convention and Athletic Complex at 10:00 a.m. on November 13 at the site along Wayne Avenue.

The ceremony is free and open to the community. Those planning to attend are encouraged to park in the lot of the former BiLo plaza along Wayne Avenue.

The groundbreaking was originally scheduled for October 9; the need to reschedule was announced in August.

This 150,000-square-foot complex will include an arena, athletic department offices, an auditorium, a hotel, and state-of-the-art conference and convention space. Occupancy is planned for 2011.

Developer Chosen for Hotel

Bolstering their public-private partnership and commitment to the development of the Kovalchick Convention and Athletic Complex, the Foundation for IUP and IUP recently announced the selection of the Horizon Team to develop the hotel property connected to the KCAC.

The Horizon Team, a group representing Horizon Properties Group LLC and Summit Development Consulting Corporation, was selected for the project by members of a committee of university and community leaders following a regional request for proposals. Find the complete story in IUP News.

New Model Shows Hotel

The latest model of the Kovalchick Convention and Athletic Complex shows the addition of a proposed hotel. Zink Hall, Memorial Field House, and Miller Stadium appear at the top of the photo, while Wayne Avenue appears at the bottom.

In recent developments, a committee composed of Foundation for IUP, Student Cooperative Association, and Chamber of Commerce representatives engaged Hotel and Leisure Advisors, a consulting firm that is conducting a study to help shape the hotel’s occupancy and amenities. Meanwhile, Global Spectrum has been selected to serve as the complex’s arena manager, and the Foundation for IUP is currently seeking a hotel developer, according to Mark Geletka, assistant vice president for Administration.
