Join us for an exciting workshop on the power of effective communication! The Center for Teaching Excellence presents “I See What You're Saying” on Saturday, February 27, 2010, at the Crimson Event Center in Folger Hall from 9:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m.

What does your body language and nonverbal communication tell people about you? Can you detect the emotions of your students and colleagues through their body language and facial expressions? Can you discern when someone is not telling the truth? Mr. Frank Marsh, a prominent speaker and facilitator, will demonstrate effective communication strategies and will teach us how to hone our own and our students’ visual critical thinking skills.

Frank is a communication analyst and a former Marine Corps Intelligence Officer. As a trainer for the Department of Justice’s National Drug Intelligence Center, he has taught special agents, intelligence analysts, police officers, and investigators from around the world the power of effective communication. Always entertaining and adept at actively engaging his audience, Frank is a frequent presenter to corporations, associations, and universities on effective communication, reading body language, and detecting deception. He is a certified handwriting analyst, and last year Frank was featured on the History Channel’s Secrets of Body Language. Don't miss this one! Mark your calendar for Saturday, February 27!

The Center for Teaching Excellence is offering the StrengthsQuest seminar by Dr. Chris Xaver on Saturday, October 24, 2009, from 9:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m. in Breezedale.

Discover your innate talents in this StrengthsQuest seminar! Dr. Chris Xaver, professor and program chair of Communications and Media Arts from Dryden, New York, will lead each participant to an understanding of his or her greatest natural talents. She will also identify specific ways you can utilize your talents in teaching, mentoring, service, and/or scholarship. StrengthsQuest, a professional development program to enhance teaching effectiveness, is offered by the Gallup Organization, best known for the Gallup Poll.

One week prior to this seminar, each registrant will receive, free of charge, a code to access the StrengthsFinder assessment. You need to complete this on-line assessment and bring the results—a list of your top five signature strengths—to the seminar. In this dynamic seminar, Dr. Xaver will then provide an interpretation of the various strengths and talents, explaining how they impact upon your work at IUP. It’s fun and very interesting to identify your innate talents through StrengthsQuest, and the program is growing in popularity on campuses across the country.

Lunch will be provided.

In order to provide each participant with an access code for the StrengthsFinder Assessment and to allow sufficient time for you to complete the assessment before this free seminar, advance registration is required. The registration deadline is October 12, 2009. To register, contact Sharon Aikins (saikins@iup.edu).

8:30 a.m.–2:30 p.m.

Crimson Event Center, Folger

Workshop Description

What can instructors do to facilitate learning when they encounter students who seem uninterested and even apathetic toward course content and assignments? Part of the responsibility for learning belongs to students, but as faculty members we can find new ways to motivate, inspire, and maybe even cajole students to learn. This workshop will demonstrate and explain how instructors can make classroom learning, perhaps one of the most artificial learning settings, a more meaningful experience for students. The presenter uses theories of learning and motivation as a basis for creating strategies to increase student engagement in course content and class sessions. Participants will have an opportunity to try out and experience first hand some of these techniques. Topics covered in this session include a discussion of active learning, motivation, collaborative learning, metacognition, learning theory, and interpersonal communication.

The Workshop Facilitator

Dr. Todd Zakrajsek is the new executive director of the Center for Faculty Excellence at University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. Prior to that, he was the inaugural director of the Faculty Center for Innovative Teaching at Central Michigan University. Previously, he was the founding director of the Center for Teaching and Learning at Southern Oregon University, where he also taught in the psychology department as a tenured associate professor. Dr. Zakrajsek has published and presented widely on the topic of student learning, including workshops and conference keynote addresses in twenty-five states and in Canada, Switzerland, and Sweden over the past several years. His workshop and presentation at this past year’s The Teaching Professor Conference was chosen as one of the best based on evaluations from participants.

The Center for Teaching Excellence (CTE), supported by the Office of the Provost and Office of the President, offers a three-day orientation to welcome all new faculty members to the IUP community.

The CTE has planned a New Faculty Orientation for Monday, Tuesday, and Wednesday, August 18–20, 2008. The workshops will begin at 8:00 a.m., with a continental breakfast in the Crimson Event Center in Folger Hall, followed by the orientation sessions. Lunch is provided each day. We will finish by 1:30 p.m. on Monday, 3:00 p.m. Tuesday, and 4:00 p.m. Wednesday. This schedule will allow you to attend to other important personal and academic concerns while providing you with information crucial to navigating your first year.

The focus Monday will be essential information you need for the start of classes. Instruction technology services staff will help you to access and use the various drives and answer technical questions. On Tuesday, we will discuss important policies and support structures you need to know about immediately. Suggestions on teaching, interacting with IUP students, and joining the Indiana community will also be offered by faculty members who have completed one or two years of teaching at IUP. On Wednesday, we will split the day between discussion of successful teaching strategies and support for pursuing research.

These three days are only the beginning of your orientation. The Center for Teaching Excellence will offer short seminars each month for new faculty through its Sustained Support Program, providing more in-depth information about topics and issues our faculty members have told us are important in making decisions regarding teaching, scholarship, and service. More information is available at 2008 New Faculty Orientation.

Please contact Sharon Aikins in the Center for Teaching Excellence at 724-357-7800 (leave a message if no one answers) or at Sharon.Aikins@iup.edu by the end of the day on August 13, indicating whether you plan to attend.

Dr. Barbara Frey, Senior Instructional Designer at University of Pittsburgh, will conduct a day-long workshop on best practices in on-line pedagogy. As IUP offers increasing numbers of courses on-line and in a hybrid format, it is apparent that traditional face-to-face course design and pedagogy must be rethought. How do such courses affect a variety of teaching and learning structures, such as learning outcomes, methods of assessment, interaction, assignment structures, and syllabi? If you teach such a course or are considering teaching one, this workshop will be important to attend!
