International Education Week will be held October 22 through October 27, 2012.
In observance of International Education Week (IEW), the IUP Office of International Education, with funding from the IUP Cooperative Association and in collaboration with other IUP offices, has created a variety of events to promote cross-cultural understanding and appreciation in our community.
IEW is a joint initiative of the U.S. Department of State and the U.S. Department of Education to promote programs that prepare Americans for a global environment and attract future leaders from abroad to study, learn, and exchange experiences in the United States.

IEW Luncheon and International PhotoContest*
12:00–1:15 p.m., Folger Hall, Crimson Event Center
Free food and music for all. Photos will be on display, and attendees can vote on their favorite photos for a People’s Choice Award. After this luncheon, photos will be on display in the Commonplace Coffeehouse until January 2013.
Six O’Clock Series: Cultural Adjustment through Study Abroad Experiences
6:00–7:30 p.m., HUB Ohio Room
Moderated by Jessica Halchak, assistant director of Study Abroad, IUP-returned study abroad students will discuss the idea of cultural adjustment focusing on the areas of academics, food, social life, and returning home. There will be time for questions at the end.

Study Abroad Fair*

Come learn about the wide range of opportunities to study overseas. Students can obtain information and talk to representatives and alumni about IUP reciprocal exchanges, affiliated programs, faculty-led programs, and overseas volunteer and service-learning opportunities. This year, ROTC at IUP will be present to discuss ROTC programs that support study abroad, including scholarships. For more information, see the Study Abroad website.
The Lively Arts Series: Ukulele Orchestra of Great Britain
8:00 p.m., Fisher Auditorium. Tickets available at the HUB.
One of the most unique and comical groups out on tour today, this quirky ensemble spins out familiar, popular, and classical tunes in a way never heard before. A concert by the Ukulele Orchestra is a funny, virtuosic, twanging, awesome, foot-stomping obituary of rock-n-roll and melodious light entertainment featuring only the “bonsai guitar” and a menagerie of voices in a collision of post-punk performance and toe-tapping oldies.

International Tea Time*

Come see a Chinese tea ceremony demonstration and visit 10 to 15 country booths, represented by IUP international students, that will have various teas, coffees, juice, and snacks favored by their respective countries. Free and open to all.
Faculty-Led Study Abroad Panel
11:30 a.m.–1:00 p.m., HUB Monongahela Room
This program is in collaboration with the Center for Teaching Excellence. For faculty in reflective practice, this 90-minute workshop is considered a large group meeting. Faculty who had led groups of students abroad will share their experiences from planning to travel to evaluation. The Office of International Education staff will discuss how to get started, while the Center for Teaching Excellence will offer ideas to internationalize curricula.

Indonesian Cultural Arts Program
7:00 p.m., Gorell Recital Hall
Traditional and popular Indonesian music and dance, including the Kolaborasi Gamelan Jawa (Javanese instrumental ensemble) and Calung (bamboo instrumental ensemble) from the Pittsburgh area, Balinese dancers, and the Anklung ensemble (another style of bamboo instrument ensemble) from Washington, D.C., and Sundanese (Western Java) musical styles performed by Indra Ridwan, faculty member of the Indonesian College of Arts at the Pasundan University in Bandung, Indonesia. In addition, IUP faculty members Stanley Chepaitis and Linda Jennings will perform with the Kolaborasi Gamelan Jawa ensemble. The program will conclude with a performance of Dandung, a popular style of music, with a chance for audience members to join in the dance. Free and open to the public; student attendance vouchers available.
*Mi Esperanza Sale — Will be at events marked above, featuring handbags, wallets, t-shirts, and jewelry made by Honduran women. There will be tables with Mi Esperanza products at daytime events Monday through Wednesday. Mi Esperanza is a nonprofit organization that supports the women of Honduras by helping them to create small businesses that provide income to support their families.
